An actor is a person who acts , or plays a role, in an artistic production. The term commonly refers to someone working in movies television , live theatre , or radio , and can occasionally denote a street entertainer. Besides playing dramatic roles, actors may also sing or dance or work only on radio or as a voice artist . A female actor may be known as an actress , although some prefer the term "actor" because of its gender-neutrality. An actor usually plays a fictional character . In the case of a true story (or a fictional story that portrays real people) an actor may play a real person (or a fictional version of the same). Occassionally, actors appear as themselves.

Help Search Member List Calendar Full Version: History Syllabus Forums ABRSM Teachers neil.clarinet Mar 9 2005, 01:38 PM Hi everyone
Just some thoughts from you. I have often wondered why, given the broad range of exams given by the ABRSM why the history of music is so conspicuously absent. I found out recently that the board have indeed cosidered this, but so far nothing has happened, though it is back on the agenda. Such a syllabus would probably test understanding of periods from Rennaissance, Baroque...and so on, role of key composers from those periods, origins and development of sonata, concerto, symphony etc. (including opera and theatre).
Anyone who has done a music degree, doing one (like myself), or even applying for one will be acutely aware how history is done to improve understanding of the music we are playing and composing. In fact, I have yet to see a music degree that does not do history of music.
Moderators are also welcome to contribute to this discussion. neil.clarinet Mar 9 2005, 07:51 PM No thoughts?

The central subjects of the first semester's course are knowledge and human nature. Especially the relation of knowledge to authority, and its varied ways of arising. The course readings and strategies engage students in learning as they think through the major questions and ideas. Some kind of “Ariadne's thread” is needed to connect the various themes within the topics of “Knowledge and Authority” and the questions “How do we know?” and “What is the nature of Humanity?” Inquiry 101 SC will take up the thread of Intellectual Growth and Development, and briefly inspect the development and growth of human knowledge through known history. Humanity can be characterized as being composed of communities of intelligent agents that know by means of our communal ability to represent. Human individuals grow and develop within such communities. Therefore a historical study of the development of human knowledge will be pursued. Once a week the instructor will introduce examples of major ideas that shaped this development. Many, if not all, of these developments were vigorously resisted for a wide variety of reasons when they first arose, but communities of the competent always won the day. Where readings are not already in the Inquiry Reader, appropriate lectures will be given .

Okay gang, I'll lay it to you frank: school sucks and days are too short. I think the government should add some extra hours to the day so I can get more sleep. Last night, I was up into the wee hours working on my number theory paper on the golden ratio. The worst thing about that is that even though I poured in so much effort and worked so tirelessly into the night on it, I wrote a really poor paper. That's whats happening with school lately: even though I know it's the second semester of my senior year and that I can afford to slack off a little, I really can't completely give up because I end up having worked on something hard enough that giving up at that point would just be a complete waste of time. Also, teachers seem to be tailoring their assignments lately so we really can't just work less hard. We can either do it well or completely blow it off and later regret that.
Anyway, to add insult to injury, not only was I forced to stay up late only to write a paper I'm not satisfied with, I ended up getting two JUGS (they're sort of afterschool detentions except instead of sitting in a room and staring at all the kids playing baseball outside yearningly, you have to do various custodial tasks around the school) for tomorrow and the day after and I also didn't have any homework done for any of my other classes and thus suffered so.

    http://www.gregsegal.com/style_and_scale.htm
Some Thoughts On Variety In Style and Scale Style Maybe it has something to do with variety shows. Back in the stone age of my youth, there were these things called variety shows. The idea probably goes straight back to vaudeville: if you don't like this act, stick around, because in five minutes there'll be something totally different you may like. Something for everybody. There were lots of these shows on TV, day and night. The concept was commonly accepted, and seemed to imply that there was a certain level of validity across the board from pop singing to plate spinning. Almost nobody I know liked everything offered, but the people in charge never seemed to put across the idea that the trained dog act and the guy with the talking hand shouldn't have been on the same show with Robert Goulet and the Doors. Maybe it has to do with the general eclecticism of the era in which I had my formative years, in which the hybridization of music and culture, and the discovery of things outside one's own frame of reference was touted as a good thing. (Within certain unspoken limits). This was the view that thoroughly infected my environment (and certainly not only mine), between, say, '65 and '75. Maybe it has to do with the Beatles. They went from (deceptively) simple songs, to "world music", then to full-on avant-garde musical experimentation and finally back again; and in their time they were viewed by many as the center and barometer of the musical world. This provided a strange sort of validation- if they did it, then it must be OK. (I'm well aware that not everyone felt this way, and I don't say that this kind of "following" is necessarily a good thing. But for many, it kicked open a lot of doors they might otherwise have passed without ever looking into. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing.) For most of my childhood, the Beatles were an ever-present, ever-respected, unchallenged icon. And they grew and took chances, with everyone watching.
