About Libraries
The first thing to do before beginning your research is to have a game plan. That means thinking about what you want to find out, then thinking about where you are likely to find it.
If you are having trouble planning your strategy, check out Research Strategies , by William Badke: http://www.acts.twu.ca/lbr/textbook.htm
Different libraries have different types of collections, so you will want to plan your research and finding efforts based on the materials you are looking for. Also, different libraries offer different types of services, so that is a factor too.
Types of libraries:
What resources and what kind of help you can get often depends on what libraries you visit. It's often useful to start with the libraries that are most beholden to you, either because you are affiliated with them or they get public tax money. Even if the librarians cannot answer your question there, they can sometimes refer you to other libraries that can help you.
Before visiting a library, call (or email) to check out what access to the collections you may have. Certain private university and special libraries don't allow the public in, or require special ID or references, or limit times and collections that are available to the public. Some libraries will issue you a library card (for free or for a fee) to check out books even if you are not part of their primary clientele; others won't.

  • Professional performers of all kinds in England and Wales toured to provincial towns, monasteries and private residences before 1642. The Records of Early English Drama project (REED) is discovering fresh evidence about medieval and renaissance entertainment for publication in volumes for all English, Scottish and Welsh counties. The September 2003 pilot version of the web site focused on data relating to the county of Lancashire. Please see 'Present Data Coverage' for a schedule of monthly uploads of further data in 2005. We invite you to discover the world of medieval and renaissance performers by exploring the images, maps and other hyperlinked features and to let us know what you think of this new research and educational resource.

Guillaume de Machaut
c. 1160-1225
Probably born in Rheims, Machaut was the leading exponent of the Ars Nova movement that flourished in France during the fourteenth century. In 1323 he joined the royal household of John of Lux embourg, King of Bohemia, and served as a clerk for about 20 years, widely respected as a poet as well as a composer. He travelled with the court, but increasingly spent his time composing rather than in administration. His first verified composition was a motet written in 1324 for the election of the Archbishop of Rheims. Through the efforts of King John, Machaut was granted several benefices, in particular the canonry of the new Gothic cathedral in Rheims, granted in 1337. He took up residency there in 1340, leaving his formal work with the king though remaining in service until the monarch's death at the battle of Crecy in 1346. Machaut was one of the earliest known users of syncopated rhythm, and was at the forefront of rhythmic experimentation in both his religious and his secular music. His Hoquetus David is one of the first pieces of purely instrumental music in modern Western times. In addition, he composed for voices in a wider vocal range than was previously thought possible. In all he wrote more than 140 (mainly polyphonic) compositions, although fewer than two dozen have been found outside his own collections, suggesting that he protected his work fiercely. 154. Poison Pen Press
Books for the reenactor and Faire patron on medieval cookery, costuming, and domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and renaissance; on line catalog and ordering information.
http://www.poisonpenpress.com
Books on medieval cookery, costuming, domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Poison Pen Press sells books, specializing in medieval cookery, costuming, and other material relating to the domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We have the finest list of in-print cookery titles in The Known World. A few interesting books relating to later historical periods have recently been added to our list, as well as a few on historical gardening; well, that's domestic, isn't it? Our secondary specialty is hard-to-find juvenile fantasies, in particular reprints of such author as D W Jones. In addition, we carry a select list of historical murder mysteries, and a few books written by our friends. I am very happy to be offering Changeover , a paperback reprint of Diana Wynne Jones’ first published novel ($20). According to the cover blurb, "It is the 1960s, and the small African country Nmkwami is preparing for independence from Britain. The prime minister is looking forward to being the first president. The last colonial governor is looking forward to a quiet retirement. The ordinary people are just looking forward to a good party. Into this peaceful scene comes the shadowy figure of Mark Changeover. Is he an international terrorist? A bomb-throwing anarchist? Or, perhaps, nobody at all? As the police hunt for Changeover, as the army mobilizes, as students come out both for and against him, a passing military plane chooses an unfortunate time to lose a nuclear bomb…" The book includes a three-page introduction by Diana Wynne Jones, discussing the origins of the book.

157. Medieval Recipies
Favourite medieval and renaissance recipes adapted for the modern cook.
http://www.bitwise.net/~ken-bill/med-p1.htm

Medieval feasts have been hobby of mine since I was asked to prepare a Medieval dinner for a SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event while in college. It was an unqualified disaster, but spurred me on with a desire to never let that happen again. Since that time, I've done a good deal more research, have had a fair amount more experience in cooking, and have collected an invaluable library of Medieval and Renaissance cookbooks. Here are some of my favorite recipes from the period. I've started each recipe of with the original text. As you'll see, there are few if any measurements of ingredients, so feel free to adjust amounts to suit your own taste without undue worry about staying authentic. Remember that that's what you'd be doing in the Middle Ages anyway. Have fun.

cherry pottage
These recipes are all scaled to serve 4 to 6 people.

Then hear these instruments played together in three varied programs:- Music at the Court of King Henry VIII, Elizabethan Popular Tunes, and a Suite of Renaissance Dances. Before his untimely death David Munrow pioneered and was to become the acknowledged master of medieval instruments, performing on television, film, and making further recordings.
