182. Digital Scriptorium
A joint project of the Bancroft Library (UC Berkeley) and the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Columbia University to digitize and make available on the World Wide Web the two universities' medieval and early renaissance manuscript holdings.
http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/scriptorium/
The Digital Scriptorium is an image database of medieval and renaissance manuscripts, intended to unite scattered resources from many institutions into an international tool for teaching and scholarly research. Medieval and renaissance manuscripts lie at the core of the work of scholars in a great number of fields: medievalists from many disciplines, classicists for the transmission of classical texts, art historians, musicologists, codicologists, paleographers, diplomatists, to begin to name the categories. The Digital Scriptorium looks to the needs of this very diverse community, and to the limited resources of libraries; it bridges the gap by means of extensive rather than intensive cataloguing, often based on legacy data, and sample imaging. Thus, as a visual catalog, it allows scholars to verify with their own eyes cataloguing information about places and dates of origin, scripts, artistic styles, and quality. It documents visually even those manuscripts that traditionally would have been unlikely candidates for reproduction. Special emphasis is placed on dated manuscripts, to provide ready access to these touchstone materials that will ultimately advance the entire field. It fosters public viewing of materials otherwise available only within libraries. Because it is web-based, it encourages interaction between the knowledge of scholars and the holdings of libraries to build an ever-enriched and corrected flow of information.

183. About Medieval And Renaissance Lathes
Part 1 About medieval and renaissance Lathes. by Thomas Rettie A SocialHistory of Furniture Design, from BC 1300 to AD 1960. Bonanza Books, New York,
http://www.his.com/~tom/sca/lathes.html
Part 1: About Medieval and Renaissance Lathes
by
Thomas Rettie The lathe is an ancient tool, dating at least to the Egyptians and, "known and used in Assyria, Greece, the Roman and Byzantine Empires." The earliest depiction of a lathe comes from a Ptolemaic tomb painting . Primarily a tool of tradesmen known as "turners" or "throwers" (the term "bodgers" came later), the lathe was also used by pulley makers, seal makers, wheelwrights, chairmakers, joiners, pewterers, bell founders, and others. Early evidence of wood turning in England dates from the 4th to the 7th century , and by 1180 there appears to have been a turner's guild established in Cologne, Germany There are several reasons why this simple machine has been in use for thousands of years. From a practical point of view, the lathe can easily produce truly round objects, invaluable in making wheels for carts and parts for mills and pumps. Turned spindles can also be easily assembled into complex objects such as chairs, beds, tables, etc. This same machine also simplifies the making of woodenware for eating, drinking, and storage. From a more aesthetic perspective, turning can create a sort of surface decoration impossible to achieve by hand alone. The combination of mechanical simplicity, versatility, and decorative appeal has made turning a steadily practiced trade throughout European culture. The idea of the lathe is simple: a piece of wood is made to turn on an axis while a sharp tool cuts or scrapes the wood into a desired shape. In the 17th century, Joseph Moxon described it as

186. Cloak And Dagger Creations Home Page
Makers of historically accurate and fantasy clothing. Specialty of medieval and renaissance.
http://www.ziplink.net/~cloak/
Fantasy costumes are those that combine styles from several historical periods or have modern elements. Fantasy costumes offer more choice in fabrics and design. These costumes are often more appropriate for Renaissance faires, stage performances, and live role playing. Most of the clothes you see in movies and on book covers are fantasy costumes. Please remember everything is handmade and that takes time, so most items are not immediately available for delivery. However we keep some items on hand so be sure to browse our currently available page. Check out our photo gallery for pictures of custom items we've made in the past but be prepared to wait for all the images to load. This catalog shows some examples of our stuff and gives an idea of our prices. This is by no means everything we are capable of doing, and the pages show only a small sample of the kind of clothing we create. We have a black and white brochure/catalog available for those who don't have web access. It's not as up-to-date as the web pages. Prices in these pages are general, do not include shipping costs, and are subject to change with fabric costs. Got an idea? Good!

WASTERS, as these wooden swords are called, were used as learning and practice tools back during the time of squires and knights. They were used to learn sword combat and hurt when a person was hit, but usually this was not life threatening. They also saved wear and tear on much more valuable swords. This still holds true today. We here at WoodenWeapons started making Wasters after hours of choreographing fights ourselves. Personally, I would prefer to save my steel weapons for a live weapons combat demonstration.
