Phyllis and Aristotle
Master of the Housebook, 1480's This course will examine women as subjects, patrons and producers of art and culture in the Renaissance period from ca. 1350-1600. We will try to study a broad range of images of women, placing them into the context of the Christian tradition, classical revival, advent of printing, and the changing religious and social values that mark those years. To understand what we observe, we will apply both traditional art-historical methodologies and newer approaches suggested by feminist criticism and historical anthropology. This course will be structured as a seminar. The first portion of the semester will be spent in lectures, reading and discussion, according to the attached schedule. A mid-term exam will give you a chance to reflect in writing upon a few of the topics we cover in the first weeks. A final exam will ask you to consider the question posed by the class: did women have a Renaissance? Each student will also conduct research on a more general assigned topic which will culminate in a lengthy written paper (15-20 pages). This topic must be chosen or assigned by February 4th. In the second part of the term, each student will conduct a class sessionthat is, give an oral presentationon her topic.

The sculptor Nicola Pisano evoked an interest in the forms of classical antiquity. In painting Giotto led the way in giving the human figure a greater sense of physical presence. He also worked toward a more realistic depiction of space, and his efforts were expanded during the 14th cent. in Siena by the Lorenzetti brothers. However, after the Black Death of 1348 came a marked decline in artistic activity as many artists and patrons died. Florence became the great center of quattrocento (15th-century) art and art theory. The artist began to emerge from the role of artisan to participate in the active current of intellectual pursuits. Together with early humanists (see humanism ), artists augmented their veneration of the purely celestial realm with an appreciation of all aspects of physical nature. They shared a growing esteem for the individual and a vital enthusiasm for classical antiquity. The architects

View paintings by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The painter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, was at the peak of his career; when in the spring of 1606, he killed a man in a dispute over a tennis match. Facing execution, he was forced to flee Rome, never to return.
During the last four years of his life, his art underwent a dramatic transformation as he lived in exile, from Naples to Malta to Sicily. The mood of his pictures became more introspective, and he practically abandoned color, choosing instead to probe the human condition using light and shadow.
Today, this 17th century master continues to inspire everyone from filmmakers to artists to fashion designers. His uncompromising representation of people and his ability to tell a story in oil make him as relevant today as ever before.

    http://www.artteacherconnection.com/pages/rennisance.htm
The Renaissance started in Italy and slowly spread throughout Europe. The church was still a major political, social and economic power as well as a primary patron of the arts, although it suffered some dark days during the Reformation. An emerging middle class began to question the old foundations and education became more available as a result of the printing press. Individual achievement, scientific inquiry and new wealth set the stage for the Renaissance to match and even surpass Classical Greece and Rome. Renaissance Artistic innovations include: oil painting, perspective as a science, aerial perspective, non religious art, sfumato, chiaroscuro, clothed nude, tremendous detail, foreshortening, child-like children, and a return to landscapes and portraits.
