The Early Renaissance
Centered in Italy, 15th Century
The Renaissance was a period of great creative and intellectual activity, during which artists broke away from the restrictions of Byzantine Art . Throughout the 15th century, artists studied the natural world in order to perfect their understanding of such subjects as anatomy and perspective.
Among the many great artists of this period were Sandro Botticelli Domenico Ghirlandaio Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca
During this period there was a related advancement of Gothic Art centered in Germany and the Netherlands, known as the Northern Renaissance
The Early Renaissance was succeeded by the mature High Renaissance period, which began circa 1500.

Artists by Movement:
The Northern Renaissance
Centered in Germany and the Netherlands, 15th-16th Centuries
The northern European tradition of Gothic Art was greatly affected by the technical and philosophical advancements of the Renaissance in Italy. While less concerned with studies of anatomy and linear perspective, northern artists were masters of technique, and their works are marvels of exquisite detail.
The great artists who inspired the Northern Renaissance included Jan van Eyck (and his brother Hubert, about whom little is known), Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden
As Italy moved into the High Renaissance , the north retained a distinct Gothic influence. Yet masters like Hieronymus Bosch Pieter Bruegel and Hans Holbein were the equal of the greatest artists of the south.
In the 16th century, as in the south, the Northern Renaissance eventually gave way to highly stylized Mannerist art.

Renaissance Art
The Renaissance was between 1400 A.D. to 1600 A.D. It began in the city states of Italy. The Renaissance means "rebirth" in French. This art reflected back to the classical time of Rome and Greece. This reflection back to the Greek and Romans was not limited to the arts, but all fields like literature, science, and architecture began to look back to the ancients for their inspiration. One of the major influences in the Renaissance was the change in the social structure of Europe at this time. Before the Renaissance, there were primarily three different social levels; the nobility, the churchmen, and the peasants. During the Renaissance Era a merchant class developed. These wealthy merchants would often hire artists to decorated family chapels in the local church or cathedral. Guilds (or groups of craftworks) would often compete with other guilds in the town by sponsoring large art projects. Later the arts were supported by rich patrician families. In the Renaissance, we see the first oil painting on canvas. It was also a time where the paintings took on three dimensions by the use of shadow and light. The subject matter included mythical subjects and nature scenes. Artists tried to show differences in proportions (meaning size and location of one thing compared to another in the painting) of their subject matter.

Mythology and Ideology in Italian Renaissance Art
The origins of the Renaissance should not be identified solely with the revival of interest shown by European civilization in the art and culture of Classical Greece and Rome. More properly, the renewed interest in Classical learning should be considered a reflection of a more significant rebirth that took place at the end of the Medieval period.
During the Medieval period, there were two focal points to European society: feudalism and the Church; the first to govern the material world, the second to govern the spiritual world. Both feudalism and the Church were highly-structured and rigid systems, intolerant of change, and both clearly supported the proposition that the rights of the individual be subordinate to the rules of society. The thing that eroded the power of these institutions, and was central to the Renaissance, was the rebirth of the individual in society. For the artistic tradition, the most important aspects of the Renaissance were the rise of powerful, independent city states and the development of Franciscan humanism.... It was in southern Europe, particularly in central and northern Italy, that this began. The rise of independent city states such as Florence, Milan, and Venice provided the economic circumstances that could support the new Renaissance artists.

High Renaissance
(1450 to 1520)
The 'birth' of new interest in Classical Greco-Latin world, that artistic revolution of the Early Renaissance matured to what is now known as the High Renaissance. There has never been growth as lovely as that of painting in Florence and Rome, of the end of 15th and early 16th centuries. High Renaissance in Italy is the climax of Renaissance art, from 1500-1525. It is also considered as a sort of natural evolution of Italian Humanism (Umanesimo.
It has been characterized by explosion of creative genius. Painting especially reached its peak of technical competence, rich artistic imagination and heroic composition. The main characteristics of High Renaissance painting are harmony and balance in construction.

Early Renaissance
(Early 1400s)
Renaissance marks the period of European history at the close of the Middle Ages and the rise of the Modern world. It represents a cultural rebirth from the 14th through the middle of the 17th centuries. Early Renaissance, mostly in Italy, bridges the art period during the fifteenth century, between the Middle Ages and the High Renaissance in Italy. It is generally known that Renaissance matured in Northen Europe later, in 16th century.
The term renaissance means rebirth and is used to mark an era of broad cultural achievement as a result of renewed interest in the classical art and ideas of Ancient Greece and Rome. The main idea of rebirth lies at the belief that through the study of the intellectual and artistic treasures of the Greco-Roman antiquity, inspired by Humanism, can be reached the artistic greatness, wisdom and enlightenment.

Also, Italy was home to many wealthy families, willing to finance education. The Medici family ruled Florence and advocated the arts and sciences. These aristocrats among others would pay people to learn and create for them, spreading knowledge into the lower classes.
