Introduction to Graduate Study
Graduate Tutor:
Professor Madawi Al-Rasheed

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies at King's is one of the largest and most distinguished in Britain. On the staff are several leading specialists with international reputations. In the most recent (2001) and in the previous three national research assessment exercises the Department has achieved a '5' rating. At the moment there are about 150 postgraduates in the Department, full-time and part-time, from Britain and overseas. The Department offers the research degrees of MPhil and PhD, an extensive taught Masters programme, and a Diploma. We stress the importance of training in the methodology and skills required for postgraduate work. Students enjoy impressive study facilities. Library resources are second to none. The College's own library contains 800,000 volumes, and its holdings in Theology and Religious Studies reflect the long and eminent tradition of theological study at King's. It also recently inherited books from the Sion College Library. The University of London's library at Senate House is a short walk away, and access can usually be arranged to the British Library, one of the world's great libraries, which is also nearby. The King's Computer Centre is superbly equipped, with a special laboratory and advisory service for Humanities users. The Language and Communication Centre provides foreign language training for postgraduates, including tuition orientated to particular research projects. The English Language Unit runs courses for overseas and European Community students who wish to improve their English.

CDRI: Digital resources for the study of religion The Cooperative Digital Resources Initiative of the American Theological Library Association and Association of Theological Schools is a repository of digital resources contributed by member libraries. The creation of CDRI has been made possible by a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. Phase One of the Initiative provided digital images of woodcuts, photographs, slides, papyri, coins, maps, and manuscripts. Phase Two added lithographs, sermons, shape-note tune books, manuscripts, and images of Christian art and iconography. Phase Three materials added in April 2005 include additional images, manuscripts, and texts. The collections included in the database are described below. Use the Search Form to locate images or browse the collections Resources from CDRI Phase Four will be added in 2006.

ATLA's ecumenical membership represents many religious traditions and denominations. Individual membership is open to anyone engaged in professional library or bibliographic work in theological and religious studies, or who has an interest in the literature of religion, theological librarianship, and the purposes and work of the Association. Institutional membership is open to libraries that support theological and religious studies research primarily on the graduate level and are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS) or a comparable regional accrediting agency. It is also open to organizations that maintain collections of theological, religious, or ecclesiastical materials that are primarily for research purposes. International institutional membership is open to theological libraries and organizations outside of the U.S. and Canada that offer professional theological education or maintain collections of theological, religious, or ecclesiastical materials that are primarily for research purposes.

Studying for a PhD will enable you to undertake advanced independent study, on a topic of your choice agreed with a supervisor, at a level both more challenging and more specialised than that possible at undergraduate or MA level. It is an ideal choice for those who would like to pursue research in religion outside a faith or denominational context, while being part of a growing community at Birkbeck that is increasingly partnering faith-based and other academic institutions. Birkbeck's multidisciplinary strengths also make it an ideal choice for those who wish to explore their field in an interdisciplinary environment. Although you will receive regular support from your supervisor, the emphasis in doctoral work is on developing your capacity for sustained independent and original enquiry and analysis. However, as a research student, you will be able to take undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a wide range of fields and disciplines within religious studies to supplement your study. Courses can be taken from undergraduate-level diplomas in Religious Studies, Theology, Islamic Studies, and Philosophy; or from the

    Introduction
This page lists a number of sites on the Internet that are useful for the study of Judaism and Christianity. The list is necessarily partial, provisional, and even parochial. A casual glance will show how Penn-centered it is. It is amazing that this much relevant information already exists on the Internet. Some of this material is brilliant, and much of it is useful. One should realize, however, that most original research Robert Harris had made available some useful guidelines for " Evaluating Internet Research Sources
