About Religious Studies
Introduction Why Canterbury?
Different academic disciplines use different methods. Those of us working in Religious Studies use a variety of these methods to do justice to the many complex traditions within the immense subject field of religion. In fact, Religious Studies is particularly challenging, since it draws on a number of disciplines, including history, anthropology, sociology, and literary criticism. Whatever approach we use, we aspire to the same ideal which applies to all scholarly work: to be open, critical, thorough, contextual, and honest.
Why Canterbury?
Religious Studies is currently taught at five universities in New Zealand-Waikato, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago. The programmes at these universities all have their individual strengths, and there are close and friendly links between them. With four permanent staff members, Religious Studies at Canterbury is one of the larger and more established programmes. Historically its approach has been to emphasise grounding in the major traditions: Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. Indeed, we pride ourselves on being the first programme in the country to have a position dedicated to the study of Islam, and we are especially strong in the field of Asian religions. Linguistic competence is another distinctive feature of the offering at Canterbury. In New Zealand, Arabic is taught only at Canterbury - alongside a developing Islamic Studies grouping within the University. Students may also learn Sanskrit here, while Hindi is sometimes available (informally), and Classical Tibetan has also been taught when the occasion demanded. This sort of opportunity is very important for students contemplating advanced study. Another strength of our programme is the range of disciplines in which our staff have been trained: history and theology, philology, textual criticism and anthropology. This enables students to approach the subject from a variety of standpoints, and enhances their intellectual development.

Therefore the Religious Studies collection reflects this interdisciplinarity and subject specialists in these other areas are consulted when materials are selected. One of the strengths of the Religious Studies department is its comprehensive analysis of religious traditions in the United States with a particular focus on the diversity of new religions and new interpretations of older religions seen in California. Some of these materials are housed in the Ethnic and Gender Studies Library in Davidson Library since they are part of collections selected in consultation with the specialists for Asian-American Studies Black Studies Chicano Studies , and Native American Studies. Primary source materials that document non-mainstream religions in the United States are located in the
