INDEX FOR THIS PAGE CHRISTIAN LITERATURE FROM THE C.S.A. How to Be Saved Day of Prayer See JOHN 3:16. USE THESE HYPERLINKED BOOKMARKS OR SCROLL HOME PAGE The following Christian tract, "How To Be Saved", was printed in the C.S.A. during the War Between the States. The message in this tract is as true now as it was from the time of Jesus Christ and as it will be until the end of this World. HOW TO BE SAVED BY REV. H. C. HORNADY. WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED? "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." Reader, art thou an awakened, anxious sinner, earnestly inquiring for the way of life? Oppressed with a heavy load of guilt, would'st thou be relieved of its intolerable burden? Fearing the wrath of God, wouldst thou seek to be reconciled to Him? Then permit me to address thee, through this little Tract, upon the subject of the great salvation. To thee, and such as thou art, the Saviour addresses words of encouragement and hope. He declares to thee, that He "came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance;" and He further says, that "He came to seek and save that which was lost." He is, himself,"'the way, the truth and the life," and is "able to save to the uttermost, all who come unto God by Him."

The proposers did not, according to its First Annual Report , intend the new society to compete with 'existing educational establishments which employ the English language and literature and which are chiefly attractive to the higher classes of Hindu youth ... but rather to reach the village populations, and the masses of the lower orders in towns throughout the country, exclusively through the vernacular of each district'. The new society was formally instituted in May 1858 as a memorial to the Indian Mutiny. John Murdoch was appointed 'Representative and Travelling Secretary in India'. In 1891 the name of the Society was changed to the Christian Literature Society for India and in 1923 the words 'and Africa' were added when the Society extended its work to that continent.

New Testament and Early Christian Literature
Graduates of the NT/ECL Department have taught in such areas as New Testament studies, early church history, early history of Western civilization, history of religions (Hellenistic and Roman periods), and religious studies generally. Students develop areas of specialized research, but carry out those investigations within the framework of a broad competence in the world of antiquity and the issues involved in tracing and comprehending the emergence of distinct Christian communities and documents. The culmination of doctoral study is a dissertation which makes an original contribution to the field of early Christian studies.
This program allows students to work with a team of scholars in the department, yet also gives them ample opportunity to study throughout the University, in such areas and divisions as the Divinity School, Classics, History, Social Sciences, and the Oriental Institute, as they design their course of study in conversation with an advisor. Students meet with advisors at least once a quarter to discuss their ideas and research interests, and plan an individualized curriculum which includes formal coursework, comprehensive and language examinations, and the dissertation
The Degree of Master of Arts
The department expects students to engage in at least two years of full time study before taking the masters level comprehensive exams. Major goals of that study include 1. the development of a compelling research agenda for advanced study in early Christianity, 2. the cultivation of superior linguistic, literary and historical skills, and 3. the attainment of expert capacities for developing and presenting (in oral and written form) original scholarly arguments.

Andrea Ebel Bro_yna. Institute of Irish Studies/Queen's University of Belfast/McGill-Queen's University Press. xvi, 292. $65.00
Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by SHERIDAN GILLEY
But if a (male) butcher or baker is not in the same position as a mother, the virtues are gender-blind, and so the Catholic church has tried to hold them up to both men and women. The church may, in the nineteenth century, have had more success with women than with men, but that was never its aim, any more than it wanted to bring more women than men to heaven. The author often shows a commendable consciousness that her own world view is not that of her subjects, but her feminist perspective obscures the essentially religious motivation and self-understanding of lives which were lived not for this world but another.

July 15, 2005 Thom Lemmons, director of ACU Press, won the 2005 Christy Award for his book, "King’s Ransom." The novel won in the category of historical fiction. "King’s Ransom" is based on a true story and follows Tsar Boris III, King of Bulgaria, who is credited with saving the lives of 50,000 Jews during World War II. The novel focuses on the relationship between a Daria, the Jewish attendant to the Bulgarian royal family, and Dobri, a sergeant in the king’s guard. Jan Beazely of Portland Oregon, co-authored the novel, which was released in September of 2004. “Jan did the research and provided the contacts, and I did the writing,” said Lemmons. “It was a good division of labor.” This honor was the first nationally-recognized award Lemmons received from the religious publishing industry. “I couldn’t quite believe they’d called my name at first, but it’s gradually sinking in,” said Lemmons.
