Samaritan Language and Literature
I. LANGUAGE
The original language of the Samaritans was the vernacular of Palestine, that is Hebrew. This language was superseded later by Aramaic. One result of the domination of Islam B.C.
II. LITERATURE
In the remainder of this article a condensed sketch will be given of the most important writings contained in the Samaritan literature. A. The Samaritan Pentateuch and the Translations of It The most important of the works belonging to Samaritan literature is the Samaritan Pentateuch, that is the Pentateuch written in the Samaritan character in Hebrew, which is not to be confounded with the Samaritan Targum (see below). In the early Christian Garizim for The most celebrated of the manuscripts of the Samaritan Pentateuch is that in the synagogue at Nablus. It is a roll made of the skins of rams, and written, according to the belief of the Samaritans, in the thirteenth year after the conquest of Canaan at the entrance to the Tabernacle on Mount Garizim by Abisha, a great-grandson of Aaron. Abisha claims for himself the authorship of the manuscript in a speech in the first person which is inserted between the columns of Deut., v, 6 sqq., in the form of what is called a tarikh . This is of course a fable. The age of the roll cannot be exactly settled, as up to now it has not been possible to examine it thoroughly.

Israeli Textbooks and Children’s Literature Promote Racism and Hatred Toward Palestinians and Arabs
By Maureen Meehan
Israeli school textbooks as well as children’s storybooks, according to recent academic studies and surveys, portray Palestinians and Arabs as “murderers,” “rioters,” “suspicious,” and generally backward and unproductive. Direct delegitimization and negative stereotyping of Palestinians and Arabs are the rule rather than the exception in Israeli schoolbooks. Professor Daniel Bar-Tal of Tel Aviv University studied 124 elementary, middle- and high school textbooks on grammar and Hebrew literature, history, geography and citizenship. Bar-Tal concluded that Israeli textbooks present the view that Jews are involved in a justified, even humanitarian, war against an Arab enemy that refuses to accept and acknowledge the existence and rights of Jews in Israel. “The early textbooks tended to describe acts of Arabs as hostile, deviant, cruel, immoral, unfair, with the intention to hurt Jews and to annihilate the State of Israel. Within this frame of reference, Arabs were delegitimized by the use of such labels as ‘robbers,’ ‘bloodthirsty,’ and ‘killers,’” said Professor Bar-Tal, adding that there has been little positive revision in the curriculum over the years.

(AD 639-709)
Abbot of Malmesbury Bishop of Sherborne Born: AD 639 in Wessex Died: 25th May AD 709 at Doulting, Somerset Aldhelm was born in Wessex, in AD 639. He was apparently a 'nephew' of King Ine, probably, in fact, a cousin of some kind. His father's name was Centa, and it has been suggested that this was a pet name for Ine's sometime predecessor, King Centwin, who died in AD 685. This would make him a brother of St. Edburga of Minster-in-Thanet . When but a boy, Aldhelm was sent to school under Adrian, Abbot of St. Augustine's, Canterbury and soon excited the wonder, even of his teachers, by his progress in the study of Latin and Greek. When somewhat more advanced in years, however, he returned to his native land of Wessex. After his return to Wessex, Aldhelm joined the community of scholars which had become established at Malmesbury, in Wiltshire, under

TRAVEL Travel Home London Guide Touring Online Planning Resources ... Scotland Chapter 11: 17th Century Religious Literature After the defeat of Charles, Parliament was anxious to provide sufficient ministers of the gospel to reach those areas of the country they deemed sufficiently in need, Wales being perhaps on top of their list. In 1650 was passed the Act for the Better Propagation and Preaching of the Gospel, appointing many prominent government officials as Commissioners in Wales. Their job, and they carried out their duties most efficiently if not ruthlessly, was to investigate complaints against the resident clergy (who had mostly supported Charles), following the doctrine of "Divine Right", and to eject those they considered unsuitable or disloyal. They also appointed "godly and painful men" to replace those who were deprived of their livings. The Welsh congregations seemed to take most of the changes in their stride. Puritan doctrines had been taking root in many of the urban centres and market towns, aided and abetted by wealthy London merchants. Since having their own Bible in 1588, in any case, the Welsh were fast becoming a "people of the Book," and they welcomed the travelling clergymen who appealed to their sense of religious independence for one thing, and who preached to them in their own language, for another. Fervent evangelists had a great and lasting influence, such as William Wroth and Walter Cradock, with Vavasor Powell, who advocated public hymn singing, the most dynamic preacher and recruiter of them all.

116. ORALITY VS

http://folklore.ee/folklore/vol8/veda.htm
ORALITY vs. WRITTEN TEXT: MEDIAEVAL DEVELOPMENTS IN VEDIC RITUAL LITERATURE
Klaus Karttunen In this article my intention is to discuss in a general way the somewhat obscure period of Indian literary and religious history falling between the last phase of the creation of commonly recognised Vedic literature (the Sm r ti part of it) and the beginnings of the modern scholarship dealing with it. In short - the mediaeval period. However, there is an inherent danger in using schematic terms of periodisation, especially when originally brought from a different geographic context. Therefore I must first try to define somewhat more exactly what I here understand under the notion of mediaevalism. A concept like the Middle Ages is not very precise, even in European circumstances, and when applied to India it has a different meaning. In history, the concept of Indian Middle Ages is mostly used as roughly corresponding the early (pre-Mughal) Islamic period, sometimes also including the period immediately preceding the Islamic conquest. In literature and religion, such a distinction as mediaeval, if used at all, must be stated differently. A text written in Sanskrit is often styled as ancient or classical, even when it is probably composed well into the second millennium A.D. In addition, there are fairly modern Sanskrit texts, and it is difficult to say where the borderline should be drawn.
