Evolving Education: "Teach the Controversy"
When the orthodoxy of America's science classrooms - namely, Neo-Darwinism - meets even the hint of a challenge, be assured of a firestorm. That's exactly what occurred in an Atlanta suburb recently - reminiscent of similar cases in Alabama, California, Kansas and, most recently, Ohio. The issue: school boards (or in some cases, textbook committees) show the temerity to bring Darwinian naturalism onto the academic "table" for scrutiny, and in some cases, to give option to its competitors, such as Intelligent Design. In September, 2002, the school board in Cobb County, the second largest school district in Georgia, was considering the adoption of a new science education policy. The policy, while not restricting the teaching of evolution, would allow the teaching of other "disputed" views on science. If alternative views have scientific merit, they can enter Cobb's classrooms. This could include Intelligent Design theory and overt Creationism. Why the brouhaha and the newsworthiness of such a seemingly simple step? According to evolution's (that is

MEd (Religious Education/Religious and Moral Education)
Background Religious Education remains one of the priority areas in the recruitment and training of teachers and an area where local authorities continue to experience staffing difficulties. In recent years, SEED have sought to recruit highly qualified graduate student teachers who have specialised in their subject areas. The courses we offer are designed to meet both these needs. Since the courses have been developed for those students who are employed or occupied and are unable to attend regular daytime or evening classes, they can be undertaken by distance learning. The courses allow students individual freedom to devise and follow their own study patterns, and be supported by academic tutors. Course team The Course Leader is Jim Con roy who is also Head of the Department of Religious Education. He has an international reputation amongst scholars and teachers. The other members of the team have taught on various postgraduate courses and together they have been responsible for the revalidation and re-accreditation of the courses in 2002.

Pupils will study the tenets of various faiths The first national framework for teaching religious education in English schools has been published.
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority says pupils should study other faiths alongside Christianity to help foster understanding and respect. The government-backed framework is not compulsory, which disappoints the Church of England, though it is pleased at the emphasis on RE for all. But the National Secular Society called it a "charter for indoctrination". 'World views' The Education Secretary, Charles Clarke, launched the framework on Thursday. Christianity is still the main religion featured. However, it recommends studying the tenets of the other five main religions - Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism - across the school years up to the age of 14. And it says it is also essential that pupils are able to share their own beliefs without embarrassment or ridicule.

The law in England and Wales requires that the main content of religious education in non-denominational schools must be devoted to the study of Christianity. ). State schools can positively promote Christianity although they cannot promote any one Christian denomination. There are provisions for pupils from a non-Christian faith to have collective worship and RE according to their own faith.( The law has always provided for a parental right of withdrawal from both worship and RE( ). Teachers also have a right of withdrawal( The 1988 reforms followed concerns that worship was becoming a secular ceremony in too many schools and that RE had become a confusing multi-faith amalgam.

In this context we seek to help students reach the aims of a BYU education through providing instruction and experiences that are spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, character building, and leading to a commitment of lifelong learning and service. The central means utilized by the faculty and staff of the department to help students obtain these goals is teaching and research concerning the doctrines, covenants, ordinances and history found in the scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to assisting students to increase their "faith in God and in the restored gospel," those who successfully complete Ancient Scripture courses will have been instructed concerning the "

Bush: Schools should teach intelligent design
Students should learn about it along with evolution, he says
WASHINGTON - President Bush said Monday he believes schools should discuss "intelligent design" alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life. During a round-table interview with reporters from five Texas newspapers, Bush declined to go into detail on his personal views of the origin of life. But he said students should learn about both theories, Knight Ridder Newspapers reported. "I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought," Bush said. "You're asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes." The theory of intelligent design says life on earth is too complex to have developed through evolution, implying that a higher power must have had a hand in creation. Christian conservatives - a substantial part of Bush's voting base - have been pushing for the teaching of intelligent design in public schools. Scientists have rejected the theory as an attempt to force religion into science education.

Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Christian Teacher Training Program
Program Objective

Shaw University Divinity School desires to enhance the quality of Christian Education being offered by denominations and local churches in North Carolina and surrounding areas. To address this concern, the Continuing Education Department of the Divinity School is offering denominational and local church educators adequate training through the Christian Teacher Training Program (CTTP). This program is designed to ensure a minimum level of Christian Education training for anyone wishing to teach in a local church or denominational setting. The CTTP program will bring together Christian educators from across the state of North Carolina and surrounding areas to present them with a systematic approach to teacher training for the Christian community.
Program Goals
The goals of the program are to:
1. Provide adequate training for persons teaching in churches and denominations.
Certify persons to teach a given course.
3. Make Continuing Education Units (CEU=s) available for students taking courses taught by SUDS/CTTP Certified teachers.

Instead, they are calculated pleas to teach what advocates consider gaps in long-accepted Darwinian theory, with many relying on the idea of intelligent design, which posits the central role of a creator.
