Getting religion
Schools must teach tolerance but also reality
It is all too fashionable to dismiss faith as the preserve of the weak-willed or the gullible. Spirituality, individual and institutional, has played a crucial role in human evolution and remains a determining characteristic of our very being. That people are embarrassed to discuss their faith, let alone profess it, is a sign that society has gone too far it its quest to homogenise humanity. To grapple with your existence, to contemplate your mortality, is hardly a characteristic of the soft-headed supplicant. Henry Adams once said, "A teacher affects eternity." Teachers in private schools profoundly appreciate the eternal dimensions of their work, for they nourish not only the minds but also the hearts and souls of their students. Serving in schools that emphasize a child's complete development, private school teachers have the privileged opportunity to transmit the core academic skills as well as the lessons that count most in life: lessons about spirituality, love, values, the wonder of creation, the purpose of existence. Can any work be more important? Indeed, the work of the private school teacher is of such significance, it is often regarded as a ministry and a calling, rather than just a job. Patty Quinn, a teacher at a private school in Maryland, described it this way: "I look at this job as a vocation, not as a career. I really think that the work that I'm doing has eternal consequences." ( Education Week , March 29, 2000) Private schools are wonderful places in which to teach. They offer caring, orderly, safe, and nurturing environments; they emphasize the education of the whole child; they insist on academic excellence; and they treat teachers as professionals, giving them considerable autonomy and independence in matters of instruction. The disciplined environment, rigorous curriculum, caring communities, and high expectations private schools provide make them some of the most effective schools in the country. Teachers in private schools can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching.

Students' turn to teach
By Laura Kenyon Published: Thursday, October 14, 2004 Media Credit: Dominic Nahous
Somewhere between jumping jacks, gibberish, and Juicy Juice, a group of preschoolers managed to concentrate long enough to learn a song they would perform for their community. For weeks, "If I was a Butterfly" thundered through their classroom like a war call through Alumni Stadium. When their big day arrived, the tykes could hardly wait to show their stuff. Staring out at the congregation, they each took a deep breath and unleashed their voices with more force than the heavenly choir of angels. Well, half of them, anyway. The rest did a great impression of deer in headlights.
Every Sunday at 10 a.m., while other Boston College students are still cuddled in bed enjoying their fourth or fifth hour of sleep, Becca Shaw, Heights staffer and CSOM '07, is teaching CCD to three- and four-year-olds at St. Ignatius Church. Her class allows parents to attend 10 a.m. Mass without struggling to keep their children calm and quiet.
Shaw is one of several BC students who teach religious education on the weekend at St. Ignatius, which is not a university church but is used for some university functions. The program begins in preschool and culminates with the sacrament of Confirmation in 11th grade. The volunteer job is not widely publicized; nor is it promoted with a bowl of Jolly Ranchers in the Dustbowl on Student Activities Day. But those who stumble upon it, via flyers or announcements at Mass take it very seriously.

Education: Teach your children ‘how to pray – not what to say’

By Marilyn Kerjean
Adults can underestimate children’s natural propensity to pray, and should be teaching them ‘how’ to pray, not merely ‘what’ to say, says author and lecturer, Sr Margaret Smith SGS (pictured). “I grew up in an era when at school we just ‘said’ prayers. Every morning we rattled them off. It didn’t bear any relationship to our lives, or the Church year or what was going on in the world around us. I’m not criticising where we came from, but I don’t think it works today. “Children have an imagination, a creativity and playfulness (such that) they see … interpret and understand things that might just pass us as adults.” This is what religious education must tap into in forming children’s prayer life, Sr Margaret says. “Religious education should form in children attitudes to life and living. There is a need for content, but I don’t think that content can stop at just facts,” she says. “Somehow those facts have to have an impact on how they live.” Sr Margaret, a Good Samaritan sister, has just published Daily Prayer Under the Southern Cross, a prayer book adapted from the American Children’s Daily Prayer 2000–2001.

Christian Doctrine
Taken in the sense of "the act of teaching" and "the knowledge imparted by teaching", this term is synonymous with CATECHESIS and CATECHISM. Didaskalia, didache , in the Vulgate, doctrina , are often used in the New Testament, especially in the Pastoral Epistles. As we might expect, the Apostle insists upon "doctrine" as one of the most important duties of a bishop (I Tim., iv, 13, 16; v, 17; II Tim., iv, 2, etc.). The word katechesis means instruction by word of mouth, especially by questioning and answering. Though it may apply to any subject-matter, it is commonly used for instruction in the elements of religion, especially preparation for initiation into Christianity . The word and others of the same origin occur in St. Luke's Gospel: "That thou mayest know the verity of those things in which thou hast been instructed" ( katechethes in quibus eruditus es i, 4). In the Acts, xviii, 25, Apollo is described as "instructed [ katechemenos edoctus ] in the way of the Lord". St. Paul uses the word twice: "I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may instruct [
