By What Authority Do We Teach? by Robert W Pazmino (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1994), 160 pages. With the publication of this book, Robert Pazmino has completed a trilogy of books dealing with issues of Christian education. His earlier book, Foundational Issues in Christian Education, examined theological, sociological, psychological, and curricular concerns. The second book, Principles and Practices of Christian Education, attempted to integrate conversion and connection into the teaching task. Now this third book defines authority and how it operates in the Christian community. Pazmino identifies authority in the church as "a relational bond that leads persons to give assent without coercion because they find security in the real or imagined strength of others." He asserts that teaching authority is vitally connected with this relational bond.

Religion teachers have two priorities. They care about their faith: They want to get as close to life's mystery as they can and to abide by their creed's moral guidelines. They also care about helping others develop strong faith, knowing that it can help people cope with everyday trials as well as moments of crisis. If you share these priorities, consider majoring in religious education. Religious education majors learn how to teach students of various ages in religious schools and organizations. They also learn how to oversee and teach religious education programs.

Now in its fortieth year, the Institute of Pastoral Studies (IPS) educates spiritual leaders for church and community. The M.A. in Religious Education prepares individuals to administer religious education programs or teach religion in schools and parishes. Participants become well-grounded in articulating the life of faith to all age groups and in a variety of contexts. Strategies for effective teaching, learning and curriculum design will be highlighted. Prayer, service projects and community building will also be explored as vital elements of religious education. Participants also develop a deep understanding of scripture, both Old and New Testaments, fundamental theology, sacraments and liturgy, as well as morality and ethics. Students in the program are typically working or intend to work as directors and coordinators of religious education in Catholic and Protestant parishes or churches; as teachers of religious education in parishes and churches; or as teachers of religion in religiously-based grammar schools and high schools. Higher Education in the Gulf
Higher Education in the Gulf will be of value to those in the West and in the Middle East with an interest in the contemporary state of the higher educational system in the region and in comparative education in general. It concentrates on the Gulf, but the problems of control, development, curriculum and purpose in higher education are general throughout the Middle East. Higher Education in the Gulf stresses the need for engagement with the problems of the Gulf States as developing countries and the roles which practical, locally-based research can play in promoting balanced, self-reliant development. For too long work in the West relating to the Gulf has concentrated on oil, military and political issues, and this book looks beyond these to the neglected areas of social, cultural and human capital aspects of modernisation. It is deliberately intended to suggest and promote research.

Clarke launches first national framework for religious education
28 October 2004 Education and Skills Secretary Charles Clarke today launched the first non-statutory national framework to support the delivery of high quality religious education (RE) in schools. The framework has been developed by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills; the major UK faith and belief communities; and RE professional groups following 18 months of consultation with them. It endorses the entitlement to RE for all pupils - irrespective of where they live, their social background, culture, race, religion and gender. The framework sets out the national expectations for teaching and learning in RE to help ensure all children benefit from consistently high quality RE teaching. It provides guidance on how RE can be taught so that pupils not only learn about religion but learn from it. It sets out ways that children can develop their knowledge, understanding and skills and suggests levels of attainment that they should achieve. Good quality RE actively contributes to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We have recently seen rising levels of popularity of RE at GCSE and A level. This framework will help us to build on this trend and have a positive impact on the teaching of RE in schools.

    http://www.ceo.cg.catholic.edu.au/re/accreditation.htm
Accreditation to Teach Religious Education The CEO requires teachers in Archdiocesan schools to be accredited before they are permitted to teach Religious Education. This is based on the following principles: 1. All members of the Catholic community are participants in an ongoing journey of religious faith development, marked by constant conversion, growth and renewal, extending from birth through death and into eternal life. 2. The first educators of children as members of the Catholic Church, a part of the family of God, are parents. In partnership with parents and pastors the Catholic school has a major role to play in the educational mission of the Church. In this context, all members of a school staff have a vital role to play in building on the foundations of faith expressed at Baptism through the formal and informal curriculum of the school community. 3. Members of the school community, regardless of their individual faith position, are encouraged to actively develop their understanding and expression of the Catholic ethos and doctrine. 4. Each member of the school staff is encouraged, therefore, to seek out avenues (at a level appropriate to their position and role within the school community) for the development of:

THE SECRETARY "...Schools do more than train children's minds. They also help to nurture their souls by reinforcing the values they learn at home and in their communities. I believe that one of the best ways we can help out schools to do this is by supporting students' rights to voluntarily practice their religious beliefs, including prayer in schools.... For more than 200 years, the First Amendment has protected our religious freedom and allowed many faiths to flourish in our homes, in our work place and in our schools. Dear American Educator,
Almost three years ago, President Clinton directed me, as U.S. Secretary of Education, in consultation with the Attorney General, to provide every public school district in America with a statement of principles addressing the extent to which religious expression and activity are permitted in our public schools. In accordance with the President's directive, I sent every school superintendent in the country guidelines on Religious Expression in Public Schools in August of 1995.

The Teacher Training Agency web site at www.canteach.gov.uk has definitive information on teacher training. There are many different routes besides the conventional three year course with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate of Education). For example, School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) and the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) are both routes that avoid a college-based course.

    The vocation to teach
Nothing involving the motivation of people to undertake a task is ever straightforward. Visiting a school towards the end of a term and listening to the conversation in the staffroom may create the impression that teachers are tired, cynical and only too eager to escape from the profession. This human response to a difficult environment should not blind church people to the real level of commitment within the profession and the significant number of teachers for whom teaching is still a vocation. Some teachers will have entered their profession with this sense of vocation already developed. Others develop such a vocation through the work that they do. The churches need to find ways of developing, encouraging and affirming the vocation to teach in the schools in their locality, not only among young people but also among those who have maturity and experience of the world to offer, alongside other gifts to the children that they will teach. More about vocation from the Teachers section of this web site.
