Abstract This paper describes how the idea of avocational teaching took shape in one particular context. It begins with a brief institutional history and then outlines some of the decisions we made during the start-up phase of the project when we were inventing structures and shaping expectations. The heart of the paper is a discussion of five features that came to characterize the KI approach to avocational teaching and teacher development. The concluding section examines some lessons we learned about what it takes to sustain ongoing teacher development. These lessons go beyond concerns about avocational teaching to address broader issues of educational leadership and teacher learning. The paper draws on a rich archive of interviews, fieldnotes, and documents collected over a three year period.

Can Graduate Students Enroll in Undergraduate Religion Classes?
Questions and Answers about Religious Education 1. What is the purpose of Religious Education at BYU? BYU is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The university is funded largely by the tithes of the Church. It is anticipated that students will achieve a balanced education, will leave BYU as built up in their faith and commitment to the Lord and his kingdom as they are prepared to engage the world of ideas and work through education or training in their chosen field. A knowledge of the gospel and an individual testimony can lead to peace and happiness in this life and prepare us for eternal life hereafter. 2. What should take place in class? It is hoped that students will be stretched and strengthened, both intellectually and spiritually, challenged to discover new truths (and internalize old ones), and at the same time grow in their commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the restored Church. The religion class should be an enjoyable and uplifting part of the BYU experience.

Religious education
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Religious education teaches the doctrines of a religion . Its usual purpose is to teach children the basics of a religion. A less common purpose is to teach new adherents of a religion. Since people within a given country often hold varying religious and non-religious beliefs, government-sponsored religious education can be a source of conflict. Countries vary widely in whether religious education is allowed in government-run schools (often called " public schools "). Those that allow it also vary in the type of education provided. People who oppose religious education in public schools on various grounds. One is that it constitutes a state sponsorship or establishment of whatever religious beliefs are taught. Others argue that if a particular religion is taught in school, children who do not belong to that religion will either feel pressure to conform or be excluded from their peers. Proponents argue that religious beliefs have historically socialized people's behavior and morality. They feel that teaching religion in school is necessary to encourage children to be responsible, spiritually sound adults. edit
Approaches in various countries
In the United States , religious education is often provided through supplementary " Sunday school ", "Hebrew school"

Children's RE
Adult RE Children's Religious Education T The Program works towards a total religious education experience that frees the minds and souls of students, encouraging them to rely on their inner authority and to integrate the seven Unitarian Universalist principles in their lives. Participants welcome questions about Unitarian Universalism and feel comfortable answering them. Within the context of the RE Program, students are challenged to look outside of themselves and expand their boundaries of self to include the larger world community, working towards the greater good of our planet. Through hands-on participation in social and environmental activities, their desire to contribute will be encouraged and affirmed, and their sense of social responsibility will be heightened. Despite the conflicts and difficulties of today’s world, our students, as a result of their participation in the RE program, will...

Teaching From Commitment: A Developmental Perspective
Siebren Miedema
Free University of Amsterdam
Although I take a sympathetic stance towards Professor Thiessen's position, several questions arise with respect to his paper. First, I have a fundamental question about the underlying epistemological and ontological presuppositions of Professor Thiessen's world view. Unfortunately, in the paper, the issue of metaphysics is not systematically dealt with in relation to the author's view on liberal education and commitment. I also wonder what sense he makes of the quite different truth conceptions of the oratorical and the liberal-free conception of liberal education. In my response I will concentrate, however, on the kind of commitment Thiessen thinks compatible with his reconstructed conception of liberal education. While Thiessen quite clearly pays attention to the different conceptions of liberal education in his paper, a systematic treatment of the core concept of commitment is missing. To get a better grip on his argumentation and conceptualization in the paper, I also turned to his 1993 book, Teaching for Commitment , to which the author refers for a more detailed description of his view. From his book I learned that commitment is a better word for faith.

If you would like to help moderate one of these lists, start a new one, get more information, or send us a comment about one or all of these lists, let us know of your interest by emailing us here Note to Religious Education Professionals (M/DRE's) : You may wish to instruct your teachers to talk to you first before discussing a problem in their classroom and/or cc you (or whomever oversees classroom problems for those with large programs) on their messages to these lists. Also, you may want to print out our flier or bookmarks to pass to teachers to inform them of this site. Note to All List Participants : Remember that these lists are not private, confidential conversations. There could be someone else from your congregation on the list and possibly a parent from your class. Really serious concerns should be brought to the religious education professional (M/DRE) as soon as possible following the incident or concern. It's best not to address individuals by name or even individual characteristics, but to generalize (how to deal with this kind of situation) as much as will work for the information that you are seeking.
