Our featured exhibit for April is Christus Rex . This is a vast site, part of which is devoted to an exhibition of religious art, mainly from Vatican museums. Click here for a brief review of the site.
This month we are also featuring an excellent article by Joseph Phelan entitled Themes in Art: The Passion of Christ . This quote from the article really says it all: "For over 400 years, from the time of Giotto to Rembrandt, Western painting is inconceivable without the vision and the stories contained in the Bible." This piece is a good overview of the story, the symbolism, and the key painters. Click here to read it now.

    Museum displays Protestant spirit
By Tom Wright International Herald Tribune SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2005 GENEVA How do you build an interesting museum about a religious faith that emphasizes individual hard work and piety over artistic expression? That's the problem that faced the creators of an intriguing new museum about Protestantism. The International Museum of the Reformation, which opened in April, traces the history of the religion over 11 rooms in a converted 18th-century mansion next to Geneva's St. Pierre Cathedral. Each room deals with a different theme, from the religion's 16th-century roots to the ordination of women. There is less time spent here on the persecution suffered by Protestants over the centuries, which is the simplest element of the religion's 500-year history to grasp, and it has dominated the way other museums have portrayed the faith.

Located in the north central part of France, in the region of Île-de-France, Paris, the capital of France, is one of the most magnificent cities in the world.
Paris is called ‘magnifique’ in so many ways, one cannot count them all: Paris the 'City of Love'. Paris the 'City of Lights'. Paris is the city with some of the most extraordinary and diverse architecture in the world: it includes castles (Versaille which was built by Louis XIV, and one of the three most visited sites in France), churches (Notre Dame a fine example of Gothic architecture) and an array of charming buildings.
Paris is known for its beautiful, world famous statues that are scattered throughout its city streets:

93. Religion And The Founding Of The American Republic
The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages A new exhibitionexamining the role that religion played in the early American republic
http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/2aa/2aa366.htm
The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages formerly The Museums at Stony Brook Stony Brook, NY http://www.longislandmuseum.org Religion and the Founding of the American Republic A Library of Congress , the exhibition focuses on the centrality of religion to early American life and politics from the Protestant Reformations of the 1500s through the Second Great Awakening and the rise of the Mormons and new sects during the 1830s-50s. Composed of approximately 160 artifacts, including original prints, letters, paintings, manuscripts and other early documents from the Library of Congress, Religion and the Founding of the American Republic traces the development of colonial America by examining the profoundly pious spirit and the traditions that shaped it. Religious convictions were at the heart of the early American experience; faith and the promise of religious freedom prompted many men and women to risk a perilous crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. The exhibition examines the full religious spectrum of early America, including Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists, Anglicans, Quakers and Congregationalists, as well as early religious minorities such as Jews and Catholics.

Christianity Islam Mysticism Religion and medicine ... by Giambattista della Porta An online version of Natural Magick by Giambattista della Porta, transcribed from the 1658 English Edition, and printed for Thomas Young and Samual Speed. The text chronicles the origins of ancient magic (also referred to as 'the natural sciences'), the definition of a magician throughout history and across cultures, magic's medicinal applications, plus miscellaneous material under chapter headings such as "Of the Generation of Animals", "Of the Production of New Plants", "Of Changing Metals", and "Of Physical Experiments". According to Giambattista Della Porta, Dramatist by Louise Ceorge Clubb, 1965 (which is also accessible from this site), Della Porta was a hugely influential figure in Naples around 1600. He wrote on "cryptography, horticulture, optics, mnemonics, meteorology, physics, astrology, physiognomy, mathematics, and fortification, and when he died at eighty, he was preparing a treatise in support of his claim to the invention of the telescope". The Web site also contains a glossary and index which is referenced throughout the main body of the text (via the use of hyperlinks). It is maintained by Scott Lincoln Davies, an American network systems engineer, and student of Islamic Studies. Witchcraft Religion Philosophy Medicine, Herbal
