The religion of the ancient Egyptians can be divided into the official or state religion and the private religion of the ordinary people, who felt that the great gods of the kings were unlikely to help them with their everyday problems. They therefore made offerings at home to friendly gods like Tauert and Bes. Tauert (a hippopotamus) protected women in childbirth, and the ugly dwarf called Bes protected humans, especially children, against evil.
Fig. G: Statuette of Tauert, SACHM 4269
Fig. 16: Bes outside Isis of Philae temple, SACHM Photo Archives The ancient Egyptians had many gods and they were often in a type of ‘family’ relationship, called a triad, where you have a father like Osiris, a mother like Isis and child, Horus. Horus was always very intimately linked with kingship, and when Egypt was united in the First Dynasty the name of the king was preceded by the title ‘Horus’. The king was thereafter regarded as a god on earth. As Horus was also the son of Osiris the king became one with Osiris when he died, therefore the living king was Horus, and the dead king Osiris.

    BIBLICAL IN NATURE
LOOKING AT 'THE RELIGION BEHIND THE ART'
    New museum stakes out mission
    By Mark I. Pinsky
    THE ORLANDO SENTINEL
    NEW YORK
On a quiet, sunny Sunday morning, when many Christians are in church, visitors trickle into the new Museum of Biblical Art called MOBIA for short at Broadway and 61st Street, not far from Lincoln Center. The silence lends an air of sanctity to the second-floor gallery, contrasting with a lighthearted and eclectic exhibit of religious folk art from the American South. Joseph Schames, a dentist from Hawthorne, Calif., is rooted before a series of abstract crucifixion collages made from everyday items cans, bicycle handlebars, kitchen utensils. "The most important part of art is the emotional feeling it can convey, putting your soul and your emotions into it," he says, taking out a digital camera to capture the artwork.

    PRIFYSGOL CYMRU ABERTAWE,
UNIVERSITY OF WALES SWANSEA Home Search Maps Graphics Abstracts David Gill The material and intellectual consequences of collecting Egyptian antiquities The surfacing of Egyptian antiquities through excavation, 'old collections', the antiquities market, or by modern manufacture has consequences, both material and intellectual, for Egyptology. This paper will explore a series of issues by taking examples from public and private collections, recent public exhibitions, and internet sales. The study will build on the methodology developed by David Gill and Christopher Chippindale (University of Cambridge) for the study of Cycladica and classical antiquities. Supporting information: http://www.swan.ac.uk/classics/staff/dg/looting/ Carolyn Graves-Brown Building Bridges This paper is intended as an optimistic and personal account of how I believe a museum of Egyptian antiquities has the potential to build bridges, not only between the diverse groups who call themselves ‘Egyptologists’, but the larger group ‘out there’. Museums containing Egyptian artefacts are liminal centres where academic meets public; romantic centres where the enchantment of the object can assert an influence beyond narrow traditional Egyptological parameters; and finally the multi-vocal nature of the artefact is perfect for inter-disciplinary approaches. Museums should not be seen as unfashionable misfits but individual creative centres, with a real role in the development of Egyptology.

Such study may move in a wide variety of directions, and so a broad definition of what constitutes an anthropology of religion site has been observed. Sites are included here on the premise that they are informative for anthropologists, whether they be otherwise thoroughly objective or seek to promote a distinct point of view. Diversity of subject matter has also been sought. Users of these sites are expected to consider for themselves the value of the information found therein.
