http://museums.ncl.ac.uk/wallnet/sen/Religion.htm
Roman Religion Religion was a very important part of Roman life. Romans believed in many gods who controlled their lives and brought them wealth and good luck. Most Roman houses had a special place where the family worshipped. There were three family gods- Janus, god of the doorway; Lar, god of the house and Vesta, goddess of the household fire. The gods were offered food and drinks at the beginning of a meal. Romans were superstitious, and so when they conquered people they sometimes started to worship local gods and often they gave them Latin names. For the army, the most important Roman gods were Jupiter the supreme god, Apollo the sun god and Mars the god of war. Many altars were dedicated to them in the forts. Emperor worship was introduced as a means of encouraging loyalty among the soldiers, who treated the Emperor as a living god. Temples were dedicated to particular gods and built in a variety of styles. The Romans had a strong belief in the supernatural and in curses. They would leave effigies of an afflicted body part, like an ear or a leg, at temples because they believed that the gods would heal them.

About the Building of Bath Museum
"The Best Treat in Bath" - The Daily Telegraph
"No Visitor to Bath should miss it" - The Spectator The Building of Bath Museum is a 'must see'. If you love Bath and its architecture then this museum explains how and why this magnificent city was built, decorated and lived in. In a period of 70 years Bath developed from a small provincial spa to being the most fashionable place, outside of London. Using a series of models, maps, paintings and reconstructions the museum looks in detail at the various crafts and personalities that built this wonderful city. We have an unrivalled collection of authentic and specialist tools, fixtures and fittings from the Georgian period. Our story begins with 17th century Bath, when the spa was famed for its healing springs, but little else. From the visits of Queen Anne in 1702 and 1703 and throughout the Georgian period (the reigns of King George I, II, III and IV) Bath was the 'valley of pleasure' where fashionable society came for the season to take the waters, enjoy good society, shops and gambling. Our exhibition leads you through how a Georgian house was constructed from the ashlar stone to the decorative plasterwork. We encourage our visitors to touch and explore the majority of our models and exhibits. You can see how a Georgian sash window was constructed or try on a pannier, a wicker backpack used by boys to carry stone to where it was needed on the building site.

Designing a religious facility is always a challenge. Although different religions call their facility a different name and have different requirements, they all have many design issues in common. Quite often, these facilities have a committee, which oversees the design and construction processes. Each committee presents their own unique set of challenges, however they all require our professional project managers and engineers to listen to their individual concerns. Money is also a concern for most religious facilities, and often as a result, they opt to build in phases. Henry Adams is willing and able to work with each religious facility and if possible complete the design in the desired phases. Our experiences have ranged from designing simple upgrades, to complete renovations to a complete design from the ground up. Bookmark Us

SEPTEMBER 9, 2002 CULTURE
As Jews celebrate their High Holy Days through Sept. 16, they can also celebrate a renaissance among Jewish museums. At a time when many cultural institutions are facing shrinking budgets and dwindling donations, Jewish museums seem to be thriving. In New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage is adding a new $60 million wing blocks from the destruction of Ground Zero. Two healthy California Jewish museums are merging to share a showplace space in downtown San Francisco. And a $10 million Jewish museum is planned for Cleveland, Ohio. Jewish museums range from stately institutions to collections in the corners of synagogues and Jewish community centers. "The interest in American Jewish history has been rising astronomically," says Ellen Smith, a consultant to many Jewish museums nationally. "Museums have emerged as one of the most able educators for people of all ages, economic and social backgrounds to learn about Jews as a people and Jews as holders of the faith." When the Council of American Jewish Museums was founded in 1977, it had just seven member institutions. Now there are more than 80. But the museums' growth carries with it questions of identity - particularly at a time when the U.S. Jewish population is struggling with lower synagogue affiliation and high intermarriage rates. A recent controversial pop-art Holocaust exhibit at the Jewish Museum in New York - which included a concentration camp model made out of Legos - showed that art can anger as well as enlighten. Are Jewish museums in your area and state expanding or shifting their focus? At a time when American Christians are showing increased interest in Judaism and the state of Israel, are museums aiming exhibits mainly at Jews or non-Jews? What face - religious or secular - are they putting on Jewish identity?

Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam
The Jewish Historical Museum is the only museum in the Netherlands to focus on Jewish history, religion and culture. The museum is located in a group of four historical Ashkenazi synagogues at the heart of the former Jewish quarter in the centre of Amsterdam. The permanent exhibition features the following themes: the role of religion and tradition, the links with Israel, the persecution of Jews during the Second World War, personal life stories and the mutual influence of Jewish and Dutch culture. Temporary exhibitions Where Mokum is Home is well worth a visit. Mokum is the Jewish name for Amsterdam. Children, and adults too, are introduced to different aspects of Jewish tradition through interactive presentations, including matzo baking and learning to write Hebrew letters. Updates: Hollandsche Schouwburg
The Jewish Historical Museum manages the Hollandsche Schouwburg. The former theatre was used during the Second World War as a deportation centre for Jews. Today it is a monument to the memory of those who died, featuring an exhibition for school children. Admission is free.

CAJM Statements Council of American Jewish Museums Joined in Remembering September 11th New York, NY, September, 2002— The Council of American Jewish Museums announces the following September 11th commemorative activities and exhibitions taking place at CAJM member museums and galleries around the country. These special events are in spirit with The American Association of Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Services initiative, “Museums Celebrate America’s Freedom: Joining Communities in a day of Remembrance September 11th” and encourage museums to join together with each other and their communities to commemorate September 11th. For more information on CAJM membership and activities, contact cajm@jewishculture.org The Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust commemorates the losses of September 11, 2001 in its newest special exhibition, “Yahrzeit: September 11th Observed”. According to Jewish tradition, the anniversary of a death is a day of reflection to remember what was lost. The observance of this day is called yarhrzeit. The exhibition will reflect on the day of tragedy and the many responses that followed, examining how Jewish ritual, communal and neighborhood organizations, and individual social response helped the city through its darkest hour. From stories of fleeing downtown that second Tuesday in September to the rituals and laws dealing with death, the Museum presents the variety of ways in which people and organizations addressed September 11th and its aftermath.
