For example, the slaughter and eating of cows would be considered a great evil by many orthodox Hindus. It would quite literally be the mark of savages. Yet, Hindus generally do not use this standard when judging non-Hindus. So, with this, let us proceed.
    Belief in Supreme God
While there somewhat of a trend going on in the ethnological circles claiming that widespread monotheistic beliefs found among many tribal peoples were due to the influence of diffusion, or by forced interpretation by missionaries, the belief in a Supreme God seems to be one of the most natural and simplest of beliefs. Indeed, very little evidence has been mustered in support of this theory and it remains simple conjecture. In the Philippines, the record of the Spanish, and the surviving indigenous traditions leave little doubt that the Filipinos had a belief in a Supreme Creator God. The name of this god varied depending on what region is discussed. Among some of the names are: Bathala, Diwata, Kabunian, Mansilatan, Makaptan, Laon, Lumauig, Mamarsua, Tuhan, etc.

From the Modern History Sourcebook A brief comparative analysis by Thomas Paine.

    Back to Modern History SourceBook
    Modern History Sourcebook:
    Thomas Paine:
Of the Religion of Deism Compared with the Christian Religion
Every person, of whatever religious denomination he may be, is a DEIST in the first article of his Creed. Deism, from the Latin word Deus, God, is the belief of a God, and this belief is the first article of every man's creed. It is on this article, universally consented to by all mankind, that the Deist builds his church, and here he rests. Whenever we step aside from this article, by mixing it with articles of human invention, we wander into a labyrinth of uncertainty and fable, and become exposed to every kind of imposition by pretenders to revelation. The Persian shows the Zend-Avesta of Zoroaster, the lawgiver of Persia, and calls it the divine law; the Bramin shows the Shaster, revealed, he says, by God to Brama, and given to him out of a cloud; the Jew shows what he calls the law of Moses, given, he says, by God, on the Mount Sinai; the Christian shows a collection of books and epistles, written by nobody knows who, and called the New Testament; and the Mahometan shows the Koran, given, he says, by God to Mahomet: each of these calls itself revealed religion, and the only true Word of God, and this the followers of each profess to believe from the habit of education, and each believes the others are imposed upon. But when the divine gift of reason begins to expand itself in the mind and calls man to reflection, he then reads and contemplates God and His works, and not in the books pretending to be revelation. The creation is the Bible of the true believer in God. Everything in this vast volume inspires him with sublime ideas of the Creator. The little and paltry, and often obscene, tales of the Bible sink into wretchedness when put in comparison with this mighty work.

  • H ow should we view the relationship between science and religion? How should that affect how we teach science? This special section of the SHiPS website offers several case studies that both suggest ways to ease the tension between science and religion and, at other times, sharpen the distinction. Historically at least, the relationship is far from simple. Here, you will find questions and cases to provoke student thinking, rather than arguments about how science triumphs in a presumed battle with religion. Indeed, many cases were selected to show how the common "either-or" dichotomy is problematic. In the 20th century, the intersection of science and religion has ignited significant conflict in the schoolsepitomized most notably by the Scopes "monkey" trial that inspired the drama, Inherit the Wind . The two perspectives have not always been viewed as antithetical, though. At the peak of the Scientific Revolution in Europe, for example, the Book of God and the Book of Nature were seen as complementarywith neither having primary authority. In non-Western traditions, conflict between science and religion rarely arises with the severity seen in the West: why? Is there something distinctive about Western (or Christian) concepts of religionor of science? This contrast alone may offer a broad perspective from which to begin discussion. Is there a conflict? How would we know? Students deserve the opportunity to explore the relationship in the context of a science class.

This is the web page for the soc.religion.christian newsgroup. It contains the charter, FAQ collection, and related material.
    Introduction to Christianity
This is a collection of essays written by the moderator. It is intended both as an introduction to Christianity for non-Christians, and as an introduction to many of the ideas discussed commonly in soc.religion.christian, such as the Trinity, sacraments, and the role of the Bible. This is probably a better place to start than the FAQ, for topics that it covers. Charter
There is a charter for soc.religion.christian. S.r.c was created before the current convention for group creation started. There was a vote to create the group and choose the moderator. However no charter was involved. Thus this charter has not been voted on. The moderator uses it to document current policies. The FAQ Collection The FAQ collection is based on articles that have been posted over the years. It comes in three parts: FAQ's: Documents that try to be objective summaries of some question.
