126. Encyclopedia Of North American Indians - - Religion
Essay by a Osage theologian on the religious traditions of various native peoples.

Religion
The phenomena referred to by the term Native American religions For instance, among the Ni U Konska Some would argue that the so-called vision quest is evidence of the quintessential individualism of Plains Indian peoples. However, just the opposite can be argued, because in Plains cultures the individual is always in symbiotic relationship with the community. This ceremony involves personal sacrifice: rigorous fasting (no food or liquids) and prayer over several days (typically four to seven) in a location removed from the rest of the community. Yet in a typical rite of vigil or vision quest, the community or some part of the community assists the individual in preparing for the ceremony and then prays constantly on behalf of the individual throughout the ceremony. Thus by engaging in this ceremony, the individual acts on behalf of and for the good of the whole community. Even when an individual seeks personal power or assistance through such a ceremony, he or she is doing so for the ultimate benefit of the community. In God Is Red Indian peoples, then, tend to locate sacred power spatially—in terms of places or in terms of spatial configuration. This is in stark contrast to European and Euro-American religious traditions, which tend to express spirituality in terms of time: a regular hour on Sundays and a seasonal liturgical calendar that has become more and more distanced from any sense of the actual flow of seasons in particular places and is therefore both more abstract and more portable than Native American traditions. In the Southern Hemisphere, for instance, Christians celebrate Lent (named for springtime and the lengthening of the days) and Easter during the antipodean autumn. It would be an exaggeration to argue that Indian peoples have no sense of time or that Europeans have no sense of space. Rather, spatiality is a dominant category of existence for Native Americans whereas time is a subordinate category. Just the opposite is generally true for European peoples.

Religion and Spirituality
A Checklist of Resources for Gay Men, Lesbians, and Bisexuals
This selective book list indicates the large number and wide range of published viewpoints available to lesbians and gay men interested in exploring their lives as spiritual journeys. Following the book list is a directory of religious organizations for gays and lesbians in the United States and the publications they produce, listings for several additional organizations and independently-published newsletters and journals devoted to exploring gay or lesbian spirituality, and a list of relevant Internet sites. Specifically excluded from the list of published resources are: novels and poetry; items written in languages other than English; brochures, study guides, and tracts; articles in periodicals; chapters of books; books exclusively addressing the spiritual dimensions of the AIDS epidemic or the experience of living with AIDS; doctrinal statements and position papers about gays and lesbians adopted by religious institutions; and blatantly homophobic treatments of the subject. Some of the books listed were produced by publishers affiliated with religious institutions, and many of the titles listed were not written by lesbians or gay men. Book titles are arranged alphabetically by title within the categories listed below. With a few exceptions, titles are listed in only one of the categories. Because not every title was examined, some titles may be inappropriately categorized, or could be categorized differently. A title/category index follows the book lists.

http://www.holyducttape.com
Welcome to..... The World Oligarchy Closed captioned for the hearing impaired! Dedicated to the loving memory of our friend, Cronan Thompson The World Oligarchy is the new upcoming government of earth, created and run by the Co-Rulers of the World (Brendan, Cronan, Wayland, and Jason). For years we have been recruiting new members from all walks of life, and each year more of our undercover supporters are elected to high positions worldwide. Even now, we have enough agents in enough government positions to control much of the world's affairs. Many major global events that occur are engineered by The World Oligarchy. When we believe that the global populace is ready, we will publicly reveal ourselves and all governments under our control will hand over their power to us simultaneously, making us the sole sovereign government of the planet. The Oligarchy is founded upon the principles of THE TRUE RELIGION , in which the Co-Rulers of the World are also Head Prophets. It is The World Oligarchy's official religion, and many True Religionists have gained high-ranking positions in the Oligarchy government. If you believe in the holiness of duct tape and sandwiches and the evils of Microsoft, Canada and Spam, this may be the religion for you. The noble effort of CaoDai is to unite all of humanity through a common vision of the Supreme Being, whatever our minor differences, in order to promote peace and understanding throughout the world. CaoDai does not seek to create a gray world, where all religions are exactly the same, only to create a more tolerant world, where all can see each other as sisters and brothers from a common divine source reaching out to a common divine destiny realizing peace within and without. CaoDai is a universal faith with the principle that all religions have one same divine origin, which is God, or Allah, or the Tao, or the Nothingness, one same ethic based on LOVE and JUSTICE, and are just different manifestations of one same TRUTH.

Religion Can Also Be Funny
Three ministers were out on a lake fishing one fine afternoon. A Protestant minister, an Episcopalian priest and a Catholic priest. They were sitting out in the middle of the lake and the Protestant minister said he had to relieve himself, so he got out of the boat and walked across the water to shore, relieved himself behind a tree. Then walked back to the boat. The Episcopalian priest did the same thing. The Catholic priest thought to himself, if they can do it, so can I. So he stepped out of the boat and promptly sank to the bottom. The other two looked at each other and one said "Do you think we should have told him about the rocks just under the water?"

138. African Religion
Although there are cultural variations in belief among Africans, author Kwabena Dei OforiAttah believes they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious character.
http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/aern/afridan.html
African Traditional Religion: Triumphs of Rituals
Introduction by Kwabena Dei Ofori-Attah The bedrock of African traditional religion is faith; faith based upon dogmatism. It is that kind of faith that does not call for any hard evidence. Again, it is that kind of faith that does not engage in metaphysics. It is simply "what was will be." In most cases, perception, intuition or the presence of a perplexing event can have a compelling effect on the belief system. Nothing is taken for granted when it comes to traditional religion. An individual may challenge the gods at his or her own risk. This does not in any way mean that all Africans have a common traditional religious practice. There are variations but they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious practices. African spirits draw their strength, inspiration and wisdom from God. In African traditional Religion, God is seen as the author of life, the maker of everything. African traditional religion belief does not offer any other version of the creation. It is simply the work of God, the omnipotent, the everlasting, ever faithful, and merciful Father of all. Symbols figure prominently in the African society. These are transferred into the religious realm to establish a strong link between the unseen "spirits" and the living. It is common to see some of these symbols on the walls of the shrines or in the clothes worn by the traditional priests and other people who wish to express their mood through any of these symbols.

A survey of the religions in Japan.
http://asnic.utexas.edu/asnic/countries/japan/japreligion.html
Religion in Japan "Freedom of religion is guaranteed to all. No religious organization shall receive any privileges from the State, nor exercise any political authority .." (Article 20 of the Constitution). AU religious organizations in Japan today enjoy complete freedom in the exercise of their beliefs. Religions in japan are classified into Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, and miscellaneous religions. Shinto is essentially indigenous, but has been heavily influenced by Buddhist ideas and practices. Buddhism and Christianity were both introduced from abroad, but the degree to which they have become indigenous to Japan differs substantially. Miscellaneous religions are mostly the so-called New Religions. Confucianism, while introduced somewhat earlier than Buddhism, has functioned primarily in the sphere of moral precepts rather than as an organized religion. Figures on religious organizations and their leadership and membership in 1985 as reported by religious organizations to the Agency for Cultural Affairs are as follows: Shinto Buddhism Christianity miscellaneous Religions Members 1 15,602,000 92.065,000 1.688,000 14,444,000
