Bibliography on Women and Religion
Susan C. Lau, North Huntingdon, PA
A B C D ... Z This version of the bibliography is arranged alphabetically by author's last name. After each bibliographical description there is an id number associated with the entry and a list of key words. You can search an index that includes all of the words in all of the alphabetical files by typing key words, dates, id numbers, authors' names, or words from titles here.
If you have a DOS or Windows computer, you can download the latest version of this bibliography, and DOS software to read and search it. Download women-rl.exe (roughly one megabyte). Create a directory for the bibliography, move women-rl.exe into that directory, and at the DOS prompt change to that directory and type women-rl . Once the files have been unpacked, you can delete women-rl.exe and type papr to run the program that can search and display the bibliography. If you prefer, you can download women-rl.zip (roughly one megabyte) and use your own unzip program to unpack the compressed data from the zip file. Biography: Susan Walter Lau, the compiler of this bibliography, has her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She teaches in the Religious Studies Department at the University and has also taught at the Greensburg Regional Campus of Pitt, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and West Virginia University. Her areas of expertise include biblical studies and historical studies in the world's religions.

Vision and Goals of the Center
The Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health seeks to:
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research, scholarship and education on the relationships among spirituality, theology and health across the adult life course, with emphasis on the later stages of life. Explore the role of faith communities in forming the health of the broader community and how we care for one another Integrate research and scholarship on the relationships among spirituality, theology and health into the practical disciplines of care and service across the adult life course
The Center is based in the Center for Aging at Duke University Medical Center and provides opportunities for Duke University professors, graduate students, undergraduates, chaplains, medical students, and residents to conduct multi-disciplinary studies on religion and health. We are interested in working with clergy, theologians, and other scientists to learn more about the relationship between religion and health, as well as exploring the medical and theological implications of that relationship. We frequently work with researchers outside of Duke who are doing research in this area, as well as provide consultation to state and federal government agencies. Center faculty members often give presentations to outside groups.

Interesting essay which clarifies the difference between the question of religion and politics and the question of church and state .
    http://www.frontiernet.net/~kenc/relandpo.htm
Church and State, Religion and Politics
    Kenneth Cauthen
The essay that formerly was on this page was published as a part of a chapter of my The Ethics of Belief: A Bio-Historical Approach, 2 vols. (Lima, OH: CSS Publishing Co., 2001). A brief summary follows.
The question of religion and politics is not the same as the question of church and state. Failure to make this distinction results in confusion. The problem of church and state has to do with institutions and the spheres of action that are appropriate for each. Here the concept of separation is valid. Thorny problems arise in two particular areas. 1. The first involves trying to steer between avoiding an establishment of religion and permitting its free exercise. Prayer in public schools and is among the most contentious. 2. A second range of problems arises when religious belief and practice conflict with secular law. The problem of religion and politics defines another set of issues. Church and state deals with the relationship of institutions that are independent of each other. Religion and politics has to do with two spheres of activities in the life of the same persons. Citizens who belong to religious groups are also members of the secular society, and this dual association generates complications. Religious beliefs have moral and social implications, and it is appropriate for people of faith to express these through their activities as citizens in the political order. The fact that ethical convictions are rooted in religious faith does not disqualify them from the political realm. However, they do not have secular validity merely because they are thought by their exponents to be religiously authorized. They must be argued for in appropriate social and political terms in harmony with national values.

    113. Molecular Expressions: The Religion Collection
This site illustrates how various items that commemorate the great religions fromaround the world appear under a microscope.
    http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/religion/
The word "religion" is derived from the Latin term religio , and although the actual meaning is in dispute, some scholars have tried to connect religio with other Latin terms such as relegere (to reread), relinquere (to relinquish), and religare (to relegate, to unite, to bind together). The terms religion and religious appear to be self-explanatory, yet they defy precise definition because they carry entirely different meanings for different people around the world. The study of religion is difficult and sometimes controversial, but the major religions of the world can be roughly divided using a geographical model based on the premise that geographical regions evolved their religions through common threads. Three main geographical regions usually are delineated as being India, the Far East (China and Japan), and the Near East. The Indian grouping includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, while the Far East religions include Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto. The main religions of the Near East are Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Baha'i. Our religion collection contains photomicrographs of various items that commemorate the great religions around the world. From the Native Americans, who base their religion on a great respect for nature, we have a photomicrograph of tobacco that was used as a gift made to elder tribal members or by visitors. We have a wide spectrum of photos representing Christianity, including the spices Myrrh and Frankincense, and baptismal water.

Is Head Start program being turned into a government funded Sunday school? In a completely unconstitutional move, House republicans yesterday decided it was perfectly fine for head start teachers to practice preferential hiring in regards to religion. The bill will allow churches running Head Start programs to discriminate on the basis of religion without risking federal cash.
