Establishment Clause:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..." The Establishment Clause has generally come to mean that government cannot authorize a church, cannot pass laws that aid or favor one religion over another, cannot pass laws that favor religious belief over non belief, cannot force a person to profess a belief. In short, government must be neutral toward religion and cannot be entangled with any religion.
Religion in public schools
Minersville v. Gobitis, 310 U.S. 586 (1940) - Supreme Court rules that a public school may require students to salute the flag and pledge allegiance even if it violates their religious scruples. West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) - Court overturns Gobitis but is broader in its scope. No one can be forced to salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance if it violates the individual's conscience. McCollum v. Board of Education

The Freethought Zone Science and Reason Over Religion and Superstition
"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear." - Thomas Jefferson

The Freedom From Religion Foundation defines freethinkers as people who form opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established belief. Freethinkers include nontheists (i.e., atheists and agnostics - see definitions ), rationalists, deists, and pantheists. The Freethought Zone is a collection of essays which address misconceptions that many theists have concerning the nature of science and religion, logic, and the beliefs of nontheists. One of the most common questions that theists ask nontheists is "Why don't you believe in my god?". The answer is that we simply do not see any valid reason for holding such a belief. In order to rationally believe any claim, one must first have credible evidence. There is, however, no credible evidence for the existence of a god. So nontheists don't believe in gods for the same reason that theists don't believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, or the gods of other religions. Stephen Roberts explained the difference between theists and atheists as follows:

Home E-Mail Download Lessons Interactive Quiz ... South America Understanding Others We study different religious faiths in order to understand other people. Many people have strong religious convictions, and it would be impossible to understand them without first understanding their beliefs. indigenous faiths. Indigenous religions are practiced throughout the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Indigenous faiths are often animistic. Animism is the belief that natural objects, natural phenomena, and the universe itself possess souls or consciousness. This is similar to the traditional beliefs of the Native Americans in North and South America. People are often mistreated for their beliefs. In the last century as many as six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. Religious conflicts persist in Ireland, the Middle East and in many other parts of the world. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 are likely the result of religious conflicts. By understanding one another, we can hope to develop tolerance and respect for all people.

193. The Realities Of Religions - Skeptically Examined
A 12 page essay on religious skepticism by Bryce Chambers, and links. (Link to essay may not appear in some browser configurations.)
http://www.snilch.com
JUSTIFIABLE SKEPTICISM! Vast assertions are proclaimed by organized religions, with undisguised intent to control human lives and destinies. Proselytizing and grandiose promotion are constant and domineering, despite the inevitably meager and dubious substance of religious foundations. They are based predominantly on humanly conceived myths, becoming imaginatively sanctified through human aspirations and speculations, and attested clearly by a broad base of ancient documentation and historical accounts. Alleged revelations by a god to selected persons are never verifiable, accepted solely by faith. Achievements by churches are furthermore an undisputable blend of good and evil. Laudable benefits to humankind are numerous, though counteracted routinely by vindictive sanctimony ranging from petty nastiness to overwhelming villainy. This site's objective is a balanced overview of religious origins, practices, and their consequences - primarily those of Christianity. The focus is on facts in evidence

R eligion in the Philippines
Jack Miller
Focus on Asian Studies, The Philippines proudly boasts to be the only Christian nation in Asia. More than 86 percent of the population is Roman Catholic, 6 percent belong to various nationalized Christian cults, and another 2 percent belong to well over 100 Protestant denominations. In addition to the Christian majority, there is a vigorous 4 percent Muslim minority, concentrated on the southern islands of Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan. Scattered in isolated mountainous regions, the remaining 2 percent follow non-Western, indigenous beliefs and practices. The Chinese minority, although statistically insignificant, has been culturally influential in coloring Filipino Catholicism with many of the beliefs and practices of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The pre-Hispanic belief system of Filipinos consisted of a pantheon of gods, spirits, creatures, and men that guarded the streams, fields, trees, mountains, forests, and houses. Bathala, who created earth and man, was superior to these other gods and spirits. Regular sacrifices and prayers were offered to placate these deities and spiritssome of which were benevolent, some malevolent. Wood and metal images represented ancestral spirits, and no distinction was made between the spirits and their physical symbol. Reward or punishment after death was dependent upon behavior in this life. Anyone who had reputed power over the supernatural and natural was automatically elevated to a position of prominence. Every village had its share of shamans and priests who competitively plied their talents and carried on ritual curing. Many gained renown for their ability to develop
