Related Category: Religion, General religion, a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by a group and that gives the members an object of devotion; a code of behavior by which individuals may judge the personal and social consequences of their actions; and a frame of reference by which individuals may relate to their group and their universe. Usually, religion concerns itself with that which transcends the known, the natural, or the expected; it is an acknowledgment of the extraordinary, the mysterious, and the supernatural. The religious consciousness generally recognizes a transcendent, sacred order and elaborates a technique to deal with the inexplicable or unpredictable elements of human experience in the world or beyond it. Equality is simultaneously the greatest accomplishment and worst failure of America. It is the place where idealism and reality come to blows in American culture. Despite the glossy veneer of "political correctness" which has been painted over the rust and corrosion of centuries of racism and classism, the enduring American necessity for a social "other" has chosen working class whites as the focal scapegoat of our time. This site explores the general treatment of working class whites in the media comics, literature, film and television; dealing in depth with the areas of religion, race relations, work and lifestyle in defining working class whites as a unique social culture.

Criticising Christianity
NEW The Suffering God a refutation of that "solution" to the problem of evil which states that God suffers in every act of evil and suffering. It is the aim of this website to point out the absurdities, inaccuracies, and general deficiencies of the Christian religion to anybody who cares to read it. So, if you are a Christian, be warned, you will probably find some of this offensive, though I do not intend to make a practise of ad hominem attacks or obscenity. I intend to go through my arguments with, and against Christianity in a rational manner - but I will criticise it. Historical Evidence for Jesus?

Languages and Language Exams
The Centre expects the use of languages in addition to English to be a normal part of the culture of scholarship. The language requirements of the Centre are in keeping with the overall character of the Study of Religion as a multi-lingual and international discipline. More directly, language skills are indispensable to sound and exacting scholarship in the study of religious phenomena and traditions. The Centre’s language requirements are thus based on the following two considerations: (1) the increasing importance of printed scholarly work on religion in languages other than English; and (2) the specialized research need to read and comprehend primary sources not in translations, but in the original languages in which they were composed. Language Examinations of the types of material they have read in connection with their preparations.

The Play of Mind: Software on the History of Ideas This site is for anyone interested in philosophy or the history of ideas. You can download any of fifteen interactive programs. They are divided into six types and all are free. The first three types of software require Windows 95 or above. The last three types require Windows 98 or above and the .NET Framework. The Forbears programs are basic and relatively effortless introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown what some great thinkers have said on a variety of issues under the general topic (philosophy, ethics, politics or America). You are also asked to choose those quotes you most agree with and in return the program analyzes your choices and displays a graph of your "philosophical proclivities." Download Forbears Programs The Bull Session programs are computerized meetings or clashings of mind yours included. The final product will be a dialogue where you are discussing several difficult questions with thinkers from around the world and throughout time. Because you have to actually write your responses, the four programs here (on art, religion, law and humanity) are more demanding than the Forbears programs. Download Bull Session Programs The two Tree Owls programs (one on European philosophers, the other on American) are challenging introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown some of the most pivotal and provocative ideas of some of the most important thinkers. You are also asked to indicate to what extent you agree with them, and graphs will be periodically displayed based on your responses.
