That line ended Allen's final column in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (September 4). Her predecessor, Willmar "Bill" Thorkelson, who left that paper a score of years ago, continued to cover religion news as a freelancer. I hope Allen does the same, given her excellent record as interviewer and reporter. Her last column was a round-up of her "furious two decades in religion," written with a perspective we historians might well envy. Without using the academic term "postmodern" or lapsing into the jargon we academics sometimes favor, she discusses postmodernity in American religion with insight and finesse. She begins by describing a visit to a White Bear Lake megachurch, where she learns that the name Baptist, to say nothing of which sort of Baptist (in this case, General Conference), means nothing. Cedar Valley Church used to be Bloomington Assembly of God. Now it's downplaying its denominational ties. It's a market world, and entrepreneurial or do-it-yourself identifiers appeal most directly.

She has, for a long time now, been convinced that devout Muslim women do not necessarily have to be dressed in black from head to toe. Yasmin is a Gujarati married to a Bangladeshi and chose to open her new shop in Whitechapel because, not only is it home to many Bangladeshis, but also because the area attracts Muslims from all around Britain who come to Europe's largest Islamic place of worship, the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre. "I feel that I'm filling a gap in the market. I know from my own experience and that of my friends that most of the Asian clothing shops in this country don't cater for Muslim women. Often their outfits aren't very modest at all."

Fashion Meets Religon By Hope Cristol Todos.com Christy Lee Velez, a.k.a. FlyChica, has been to hell and back. The 30-year-old survived life in a Miami gang, a debilitating skin condition and cancer. Art and God got her through, she says. Sick, nearly crippled and unable to hold a job at the age of 26, Velez made ends meet by selling her nameplate rosaries. The one-of-a-kind, handmade religious neckwear is personalized with small alphabet beads. Custom slogans are spelled out in the center, nicknames are strung on the back. She doesn't charge much (from $12 to $15) and even now, she's hardly turning a profit. "I believe this is God's plan for me. Whether I make it or break it, I'm just happy doing it," she said. For FlyChica, customers' kindness and gratitude are sufficient to keep her spirits high, her attitude positive and her craft-turned-business alive. Hate mail was the last thing she expected in response to an article about her Nashville-based company, FlyChica Productions, for a popular teen-webzine. A number of readers expressed vehement opposition to her so-called exploitation of the church. Never mind the popular musicians who wear crucifixes and little else as they curse, grope their bodies and smash their instruments on stage.

Take a look at this story . How about these ones ? All accounts of average Americans being denied their Constitutional freedom of religion by being forbidden to express their religion. Ordinary Americans, sacked from their jobs and kicked out of their schools because their religious beliefs don't suit the narrow-minded Christian minority. This is an outrage, isn't it? Well no. It isn't an outrage. If ordinary people had been persecuted for their sincerely held religious beliefs, that would be an outrage. But that isn't what happened. What happened is that some slacker teenagers made a fashion statement which was aimed at shocking ordinary decent people, then acted all surprised when it had the intended effect. It's time to face the truth; Wicca isn't a religion, and to compare the legitimate dress codes of American employers and educators with genuine persecution of religious minorities is offensive.

MCKILLOP LIBRARY IS DEVELOPING AN ANIME COLLECTION! Anime is a Japanese style of animated storytelling for adults or children. It can be in the form of updated Japanese folktales or fully modern stories for adults, which often deal with issues of the philosophy of technology, or human culture in an increasingly technological world. Anime is often developed out of manga, or "graphic novels" which are aimed to be read by people of all ages and are wildly popular in Japan. Closely watching different anime films can provide an introduction to many aspects of Japanese culture, including Shinto practices and Japanese history.

These days, the Good Book is often not a book
LAWRENCE JENKINS/Special to DMN Hal Davis (second from right, at a Thursday morning bible study in Plano) says that having the Bible on PDA - and in many translations - is handy for quick reference. In the beginning was the Word. And the Word became digital. With all the new technology at our fingertips, it was just a matter of time. Now, those who are both devout and tech savvy can carry the ancient words of Scripture wherever they go - on a cellphone, iPod, personal digital assistant or laptop, to name just a few "platforms." (See also List of types of clothing and Clothing terminology Humans nearly universally wear articles of clothing (also known as dress garments , or attire ) on the body . In its broadest sense, clothing is defined as coverings for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for hands ( gloves ), feet ( shoes sandals boots ), and head ( hats caps ). For the alternative, see nudity Articles carried rather than worn (such as purses canes , and umbrellas ) are normally counted as accessories rather than as clothing. Jewelry and eyeglasses are usually counted as accessories as well, even though in common speech these items are described as worn rather than carried. As humans we also decorate our bodies with makeup or cosmetics perfume , and other ornamentation ; we also cut, dye, and arrange the hair of our heads, faces , and bodies (see hairstyle ), and sometimes also mark our skin (by tattoos scarifications , and piercings ). All these decorations contribute to the overall effect and message of clothing, but do not constitute clothing per se. People wear clothing for functional as well as for social reasons. In its broadest sense some have defined it as the sum total of answers given to explain humankind's relationship with the universe. In the course of the development of religion , it has taken many forms in various cultures and individuals. Occasionally, the word "religion" is used to designate what should be more properly described as "organized religion" – that is, an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organization

March 16 2003 Picture: JOHN DONEGAN Eye on the situation: Julie Montan is irrepressibly political. Michelle Griffin meets Monty and wonders how much difference a T-shirt can make. Monty's range of limited edition T-shirts, released and marketed under the "How's Ya Father?" label, are all about hot-button topics: reconciliation, religious intolerance, sexual abuse. Yet she's somehow persuaded Belinda Seper, the notoriously picky owner of Sydney's The Corner Store, to stock her wares, along with other shops looking for something with an edge. Her T-shirts, sold in limited editions of 100 per image, range in price from $25 to $160, but have already attracted fans and collectors. Monty's not the only fashion designer who likes to court a little controversy. Karl Lagerfeld decorated a Chanel bodice with verses from the Koran, Jean Paul Gaultier designed a range inspired by Hasidic Jews, John Galliano sent his models onto the catwalk in 2000 in shredded gowns inspired by the homeless men he passed on his daily jog. Ever since New York fashion week was cancelled in the second week of September, 2001, designers have been trying to link their vision (be it mini-skirts, see-through pants, or the return of fur) to the prevailing wartime mood. And activist designer Katharine Hamnett returned to the catwalk for the first time in over a decade at the recent London Fashion Week, with T-shirts that said "Stop War, Blair Out".
