xquisite Victorian Links
Why this page?
In general I'm not fond of web-sites which consists of nothing but links. To justify a web-page you really should have something to offer of your own, not just directions to other people's work. With this page I make an obvious exception from my own rule. The reason is, that during my frequent searches for information about Victorian varia, I so often ended in a huge link index where half of the links were broken or the pages not really worth the time it took to download them. As my own list of bookmarks grew I thought: Why not share them with other people who have the same needs of precise on-line info about all things Victorian. I hope, I'll be able to keep this list of high quality Victorian links updated and continuously growing!!! If you have suggestions of any kind, please contact me: Mia Stampe

Sunday :: February 20, 2005 Fashion Ad Pulled of Models at 'Last Supper' Can someone explain why this ad is so offensive it would be pulled in Milan
The Guardian reports The poster has been plastered on walls, billboards and magazines in New York and Paris for weeks. In Milan, where Leonardo's fresco is preserved and the influence of the Vatican is never far away, city authorities have banned it. It's a play off the best-selling book, the DaVinci Code, "which suggests that the figure of John in Da Vinci's masterpiece is actually Mary Magdalen in disguise." I think it's provocative and stylish. Italian companies have a history of provacative advertising...remember Benneton's ad with the priest kissing the nun? Or my favorite, Benneton's 2000 ad campaign, " We on Death Row " that was placed as a separate supplement in (now defunct) Talk Magazine? The interviews with the inmates were poignant and made the point that inmates are human beings too. Blowups of the inmates appeared on billboards all over town. It was an innovative means of having people stop and ask themselves, "Should we be killing people?" Sears pulled Benneton's merchandise from its stores due to the ads. I haven't bought anything at Sears since.

Payments for the conference can now be processed by clicking on the registration page Various possibilities for publication are being explored. To be considered for publication, papers need to be expandable to essay length of no more than 5000 words. It is hoped that several different publishing outcomes will result, from themed journal editions to selected essays collected around a particular concern.

Papers
We welcome papers that address issues outlined above. But we are especially interested in attracting as wide a range of topics, dealing with fashion and dress, as possible. This will allow us to spread out debate across all facets and aspects of contemporary fashion, dress and consumption. White "finds." Black "loots." Brown hides beneath church pews. Too bad the press isn't looking.
By Marissa Kantor
While blacks are busy “looting” and whites are “finding,” (to drudge up the most over-played image-war thus far), what no one is mentioning is that Latinos are “hiding,” mostly in churches where they at least feel protected. La Iglesia Lugar de Sanidad (The Church of the Place of Healing), in Gonzales, Louisiana, is now home to more than 100 immigrants from several Latin American countries. The reverent are turning to God for help, since no one else seems to care all that much. Or so the lack of media coverage leads us to believe...

After a Fashion
BY STEPHEN MACMILLAN MOSER
May 17, 2002: ALLEY-CATTING
The monthly First Thursdays on the chic SoCo strip are so fun I sometimes don't even make it past the first couple of blocks. A handful of stores and salons on the north end of the strip kept me so entertained that I never left. I did buy a beautiful silver ring at the Turquoise Door , and ogled a bracelet that I must own, but this night something unusual occurred. You see, I'm not very spiritual. I don't go to church or follow any variety of mysticism or religion ... except fashion. I do subscribe to one tenet, however, that if it's not pretty, I don't want to see it. I'm self-admittedly deeply superficial one of those fashionistas about whom they say, "What do you get when you scratch the surface? More surface." So it was with a great deal of insouciance that I sashayed myself right into the chair of Lois. The sign on the table said " Intuitive Readings by Lois concise, compassionate communication about your past, present, and future, by appointment only 445-0627." I plunked down 10 bucks for 10 minutes and, like Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest , I whirled around in my chair and said, "Let's go." Lois had me draw four cards, and in the blink of an eye (several blinks, actually) she had read my beads up and down. She ticked off an astoundingly specific list of major factors in my life, and was blunt about my role in them. I won't divulge the content, but needless to say, I give Lois major marks for accuracy. Immediately after, I was kidnapped by my NBFs

The bywords for clothing in Israel are casual and comfortable. For evening, the most formal event requires no more than a dark suit for men (with a shirt and tie being much more the norm), and a cocktail dress for women.
Temperatures during the summertime hit the high 90s (38-40c) on a regular basis, so dress sensibly: natural fibers are recommended, and a hat, sunglasses and sunblock are essential. In the evenings, a light jacket or cardigan is a good idea if you're visiting in higher elevations such as Jerusalem.
Late autumn through early spring, plan to "dress like an onion". Layers that can be peeled off (or added back on) as the day or evening progresses are always a good bet.
At all times of the year, bring head coverings for protection against the sun (and the requisite sunglasses and sunblockdon't say we didn't warn you), comfortable walking shoes, and a bathing suit. PLEASE NOTE: It's imperative to dress moderately if you plan to visit observant areas or religious sites. For women, this usually means a head covering, long sleeves, and a skirt at least mid-calf in length. For men, trousers and a short-sleeved shirt are customary.

The Fashion of the Priced
A friend told me this weekend that she had gone to see The Passion , Mel Gibson's act of faith movie. "Did you see it?" she gushed. "Are you going to see it?" I said, "No. I read the book. I already know how it comes out." She shifted away from what seemed to be the lead-in to a discussion of the religious aspects of the film, instead talking about how intense the scenes were. "I left stunned by the movie," she added quietly. "There's so much violence in it." Her husband offered "It struck me that in 2000 years, we haven't changed much. We are still vicious animals." That's when a thought hit me, answering a nagging question I had lurking about the back recesses of my mind about why Gibson's popular and very profitable movie, now with an announced sequel in the works, disturbed me so much even though I hadn't seen it. But now I could see what bothered me so - the movie celebrates, through a focus on the brutality and not on the real message of Jesus, the triumph of the Old Testament over the New. My friend's husband was right. We are still animals - sadistic animals who celebrate brutal violence and the joys of inflicting pain, fobbing off any responsibility because "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven".

Posted Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at 3:26 pm by phil under General And thank you to one of our readers - Michael, who is also from nccc but spending a year in the US for sending me this interesting newspaper article. BY RACHEL ZOLL
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sep 7, 2004 NEW YORK Faiza worships five times a day, while Rhianna is as likely to believe in God as in the Easter Bunny. Kristin prays too, but to the God and the Goddess.
This teenage religion debate can be found on the pages of a magazine better known for explaining how to match lipstick to blush, not exploring the concept of a higher power.
The content is serious. Verses from the New Testament are printed beside sayings from the Prophet Muhammad. The teachings of Pope John Paul II and the Dalai Lama are also featured.
Rubenstein said she started the section not to spread a religious message but to provide a forum on an issue she believes is important to this generation of girls.
Experts on religion and youth trends agree. They theorize that teens are rebelling against the broad, undefined spirituality of their baby-boomer parents, and are seeking out environments - like those in church - with clearer rules that help them cope with day-to-day problems.
Rubenstein, who was the founding editor of CosmoGirl!, said she first proposed a faith section several years ago when she was just starting out in magazine publishing. The response from the other editors, she said, was that a fashion magazine was no place for God.

60. Religion In Belarus
Another part of young people are attracted to religion by curiosity or fashion. But nevertheless Belarus is now experiencing a clear religious growth.

Religion in Belarus
Paganism
Before 990 A.D. Belarusians - a mix of several Eastern Slavic tribes (mostly Kryvichi and their branches) and several Baltic tribes (Yatviangians, Litts, Latts) - were pagans in their beliefs. As the Slavs have arrived from South to the lands of today's Belarus they have encountered and absorbed the cultures and beliefs of Baltic and other peoples inhabiting the land. There was already a rich Pagan heritage which reveals today through ancient names. Neman (Nioman, Niamunas) - one of the main rivers of the area is bearing the name of Celtic Goddess of War - Neman. Kupala - an ancient Goddess of Water. One of the mysterious peoples completely assimilated by us was Yatviangians . Ancient Belarusians believed in God of Sun - Yaryla, celebrated seasons of nature very much similar to druidic calendar. The cycles of folk songs that were sang at these celebrations still exist. The main pagan festivities are:
Spring Greeting - a plentitude of spring greeting songs -"Vesnavyya pesni" exists, including "Yur'ya"
