Mount Sinai Spinal Cord Injury Model System
Special Programs SCI Education Series earning about SCI is extremely important for newly injured patients. Therefore, the MS-SCI-MS offers an education series that is required for all inpatients and open to their families and to outpatients. This education series is designed to provide a foundation to understanding how SCI impacts individuals and their family and friends. In this series, patients learn about spinal cord injury and the changes the body undergoes after injury. They learn how to take care of themselves and to anticipate and prevent problems. It also gives them the tools to problem solve if a problem should arise. The SCI education series is taught by members of the SCI team. The classes take place Tuesday and Thursday at 12 P.M. in the community dining room located on KCC2. It is an extremely important part of the inpatient rehabilitation program, and all inpatients are expected to attend these classes. Sessions

        Applicants are expected to have completed a master's degree from a CORE accredited rehabilitation counseling program and to have the equivalent of two years of full time work experience in the field or in a related human service area. Applicants with a master's degree in counseling, psychology, or other human service field will also be considered in rehabilitation in addition to the usual doctoral curriculum. It should be noted that this program is not a clinical program and does not prepare candidates for licensure as psychologists. Students seeking such training are encouraged to apply to the MSU doctoral program in Counseling Psychology which is approved by the APA and which offers opportunity for specialized study in rehabilitation psychology.

    CFDA 84.160A OVERVIEW The Interpreter Education Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is funded to operate the RSA Region VI (AR, LA, NM, OK, TX) Interpreter Education Project for the five year cycle which began October 1, 2000 and continues through September 30, 2005. One of ten regional programs funded for this current five year cycle, RSA Region VI consists of a 17 member consortium network of pre- and inservice training to: 1) train sign language, tactile, and oral and cued speech interpreters, 2) provide training workshops for interpreters to maintain their skills; and 3) provide training workshops for interpreters to raise their level of competence. Programming and training curricula for fiscal years 2000-2005 is addressing interpreter preparation at a variety of degree and certification levels through specific pre- and inservice training opportunities. Additionally, the Project aims to integrate curricula developed by the two national RSA projects on interpreting for culturally diverse populations and interpreting for individuals who are deaf-blind.

This pilot project report examines postschool employment of program participants from a collaborative effort, jointly funded by rehabilitation services and special education. In particular, we examined the employment outcomes achieved by participants, the school training activities that are associated with positive postschool outcomes, and the potential implications for rehabilitation professionals' collaboration with school programs.

    Director of the
    New York Institute for the Education of the Blind
    Dr. Merle E. Frampton died unexpectedly, December 17, 1998 in Portland, Oregon. He was born September 15, 1903 in Smithfield, West Virginia. Dr. Frampton was Director of the New York Institute for the Education of the Blind from 1935 until his retirement in 1971. He was a graduate of Boston University, (MS, 1927) and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1934) He sought to involve the private sector In the New York area to provide the best educational opportunities available for the visually handicapped, the deaf -blind, and multiple handicapped through proper facilities, and prepared teachers at the New York Institute For The Blind. He started the first program for graduate students in the field of special education at Columbia University, and personally financed scholarships with his Columbia and Hunter teaching stipend.
    Blinded Navy veterans were sent
    to NYI for rehabilitation during WWII
    Visually handicapped children from schools on the East Coast enjoyed valuable summer experiences in independence at the first camp for them in the United States started by Dr. and Mrs. Frampton in 1938. Throughout his long professional career, he was involved in developing state and federal legislation to improve the public responsibility for the education of the handicapped. He helped establish the "Employ the Handicapped" week. During World War II he started the training program for Waves to be teachers for the program he set up for the rehabilitation of blinded Navy personel. After retirement, he worked for better diagnostic programs for young children with handicaps.
