Main April 29, 2004 Strange New Tastes Normally I can read a recipe and imagine the taste of the finished dish. The New York Times' feature on avant-garde cuisine , however, left me totally mystified. Smoked mashed potatoes ? Dehydrated bell peppers pulverized and dusted across a steak? Martini jello shots? Beef stock foam? Minibar Also posted at A Frolic of My Own TrackBack Comments The last two catered parties I've been to in Paris featured these jelly-shooters type hors-d'ouvres, so they are pretty trendy here too. Personally, I think they are more work than they are worth for both the consumer and the preparer. In a cocktail situation, it's almost impossible to eat them without putting down your glass somewhere, which is usually a problem. And they aren't nearly as satisfying as good old fashioned canapés and mini-sandwiches in my opinion. All froth and no substance!! Posted by Meg in Paris on April 30, 2004 at 05:06 AM I have yet to be served any of these dishes at a party in Washington. That probably says something about Washington's lack of hipness compared to Paris. Of course, that is something no one needed to actually say. Posted by Todd on April 30, 2004 at 05:40 AM

In 1905, Thomas Fentiman, an iron-worker from Yorkshire, accepted a secret recipe for ginger beer as security against a loan. When the loan was not repaid, Thomas was left out of pocket but in possession of what would become one of the most recognised brands of fizzy drinks in the country. After World War II, Thomas’ son Arthur kick-started the company, and soon five breweries up and down the north-east of England were striving to satisfy a thirst for Fentimans’ unique brews. In today’s terms, Thomas’ loan of a few hundred pounds had been transformed into a multimillion-pound industry. But it didn’t last. In the 1960s came modern supermarkets with high distribution demands; Fentimans, with its doorstep deliveries from stone jars, simply could not compete and, in 1971, the last remaining brewery closed its doors for the final time. However, the formula survived—and with it the Fentiman entrepreneurial gene. Cue Eldon Robson, Thomas’ great-great-grandson, who fired up production again in 1994 and this year celebrates the centenary of the company’s foundation. So just what is it about Fentimans Botanically Brewed Beverages that has seen them enjoy such a popular revival? Perhaps it’s the company’s reliance on traditional methods of brewing, using only natural ingredients and fermenting over seven days—a process that also give the drinks their alcoholic (0.5% ABV) kick.

But no one takes the medicinal power of soups more seriously than the Chinese, and not only as a treatment for the common cold. I would use an aussie stickie, the Yalumba Museum Release Muscat comes immediately to mind. It is distinctly rasiny/date/caramel flavored.

Weird Things Happen To Me
Yesterday, as I was signing the UPS log, the UPS guy leaned over and touched my big toe. And said, "Nice." Just.... wha? Strangers don't touch strangers, dude. He wasn't freaky; he seemed very nice. I don't mean to, or even think I should, make a complaint. Apparently he must appreciate chipped sparkly polish. But it was weird. (But the reason he was there was fabulous: I was receiving a box of Penzey's spices from Gwen, who sent them in response to my plea for vegetable recipe ideas. I'm so excited! Now I have to read their catalog and figure out how to use them, but hey, one of the spice mixtures even has chipotle in it! And there's this shallot-pepper mix that looks so good, and a bunch of others! I'm spoiled and happy and learning how to cook!) (Aside numero dos: Although I am cooking way more nowadays, I'm still pretty flippin' clueless. I decided to attempt bhindi masala the other night, a crunchy, spicy, Indian okra dish. It called for chopped green chilies. I wasn't sure how many to chop, so I sliced up half the basket, maybe about forty of them. I thought they were like little green bell peppers. When sauteing them, I noticed I couldn't breathe, all-of-a-sudden-like, and had to open the windows and turn on the fan. Then I ate some of the okra with some rice, and thought it was mighty hot. And then my mouth heated up more. And more. And more. I thought I might never eat again. I didn't even bother with ice water or milk, I just licked the ice cube trays in an attempt to cool off my mouth. Finally I referred to the recipe, where I found that I should have chopped TWO green chilies. Damn it.)

Alligator on a Stick
(US South) Chucks of deep fried alligator (tail part, battered in corn meal, seasonings, probably similar to snake recipe) served on a 10 inch wooden skewer. Seen mostly at outdoor festivals. Has a chewy consistency like undercooked pork. Tastes like alligator.
Most people balk at the thought of eating one of these large lizards. When washed well, these can be cooked as anything you like and flavor is close to fried fish, chicken nuggets, or roast BBQ ribs. Mainly from South Louisiana. For more, see www.klieberttours.com Turtle Eggs
(Nicaragua) There are many odd foods I have encountered in my travels, the one that stands out the most though is raw sea turtle eggs. They look like a boiled ping pong ball. You make a small rip in the soft shell, maybe add a few drops of hot sauce, and then suck the raw contents down, followed by a shot of rum. The taste of the egg is slightly fishy and not at all pleasant. I ate a dozen one night due to the prodding of the locals. I won't go into detail on how the combination leaves one the next day...
