    Introdution
Its not easy reproducing recipes from old cook books, or should I say translating them. These recipes came from authentic handwritten 'receipt' books of the eighteenth century. It is not just the ingredients which are strange to the modern eye - although many of them seem strange enough - 'Cowcumbers' may be obvious, but how many of us now use 'orringoe' roots, or 'shivred pallats'? There is also a tendency to not explain much in the way of weights and measures - some recipes just call for 'sugar' and '2 or 3 eggs'. These receipts were well known to these women, as was cooking. They new the proportions needed and so they need not spell things out in their own handwritten books. There is also a complete lack of temperature and cooking times - well that's fairly obvious. The first closed stoves were not really in use until the early nineteenth century anyway. To measure temperature was futile, just as a cook would time it according to what she knew.

Chocolate Therapies (with Recipe for Janet’s Chocolate Medicinal Mousse Pie)
Janet Raloff Chocolate has made news over the past few months for the apparently heart-healthy properties of some of its components—antioxidants known as flavonoids (see Chocolate Hearts: http://www.sciencenews.org/20000318/bob10.asp .) These findings, together with data reported several years ago on the treats' ability to turn on opiate receptors in the brain (SN: 10/12/96, p. 235), threaten to transform the image of chocolate from dietary vice to herbal medicine. Recently harvested cacao pods. Each holds several dozen seeds, from which chocolate and cocoa are made.
(Allen M. Young) To meso-American anthropologists, however, the idea that chocolate can be health-promoting is old hat— very old hat.

STRANGE WATER - MONO LAKE GOURMET
    By David Carle, Park Ranger
    Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve
"Good morning! We have two very unusual recipes for today's program, so grab your measuring cups and spoons and prepare to make: 'Mock Mono Lake Soup" and "Tufa Porridge Extraordinaire.' Sounds yummy? As always, we offer only the unique and highly seasoned on the Mono Lake Recipes Show.
"Ingredients! Mock Mono Lake Soup can be made with normal items you keep around the house, but I'll list the ingredients slowly to give you time to gather them together. Some of these things are not generally kept in the kitchen. Mono Lake has been busily accumulating its various ingredients for over 700,000 years, we figure, so speed is obviously not of the essence.
"Oh, yes, you'll need some sort of closed container. Something that will hold the ingredients in place, creating the perfect environment for a highly seasoned soup. No seives, you understand. The Mono Basin has no outlet; neither should your bowl.
"So, those ingredients: as you see, we have fresh clean water, direct from the tap. And regular old table salt (sodium chloride, to you chemistry buffs). Then some baking soda; this is very critical to both recipes we are preparing. Do you recall its chemical name, "sodium bicarbonate?" Yes, it is that bitter stuff that helps you burp and feel better when your tummy's upset. Mono Lake is loaded with baking soda. And then, some epsom salts (magnesium sulfate, that is), along with a little borax. Finally, just a pinch of a phosphate-containing laundry soap.

We Southeast Asians love gorengan , or fritters, especially come tea time in the evening. We've all had deep-fried versions of local fruits such pisang (banana), ubi keledek (sweet potato), and cempedak (jackfruit), all typically covered in a semi-salty coating of rice flour batter. Sinking your teeth into a hot and greasy sweet pisang goreng is just heavenly and sipping a cup of hot tea to wash it down brings the world (and your heart) to a standstill. But has anyone ever tried Fried Oreo Cookies Some of you are possibly cringing in disbelief at such an atrocious food concept. Heck, I couldn't believe that fried Oreo cookies existed ! I first discovered about it while surfing an article on how to win at carnival games . Later in the article Robert (the author) mentioned that fried Oreos were an ever popular American carnival junk food that his friends liked. Admittedly, I got extremely curious about it and as a result, I found many recipes for these weird fried Oreos littered all over the Internet. I obviously couldn't keep this information to myself. So today I am going to

I bought a bag of marshmallows one day and knew that they were doomed to a task I'd been itching to undertake for years: make marshmallow Rice Krispies treats! Incredibly easy to make, this super gooey tidbit is a no-brainer decision for those last minute potluck parties where you just couldn't be bothered to cook anything elaborate. Come readers, let's see how I pulled off this instant junkfood stunt! Armed with my marshmallows, a print-out recipe from Cooks.com , a box of Kellog's Rice Krispies cereal, butter and vanilla essence, I was all set. The Philippines-imported marshmallows I purchased are halal since the gelatin is made of beef and not from pork like these cute Halloween Marshmallow Peeps my friend Jon Loeb brought me from the USA. (Sadly I had to give the Peeps away to my non-Muslim friends, but darn it, were they ever cute! According to the online recipe you'd need 4 cups of mini marshmallows but I decided to use the whole bag whose volume totaled to about 5 cups. Oh what the heck, screw the measurements; I decided to use the entire small box of Rice Krispies cereal too.
