FLUBBER
Borate solution

2/3 cup warm water
1 1/2 teaspoon powdered Borax
3 drops food coloring
Mix together in a 1 cup measuring cup using a wooden spoon
Glue Solution

3/4 cup warm water
1 cup white school glue Mix together in a mixing bowl using a wooden spoon Pour the borate solution into the bowl with glue solution. Use your hands to gently lift and turn the mixture until only one tablespoon of liquid is left. Flubber will be sticky for a moment or two. After the excess liquid has dripped off, Flubber is ready. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. When you are through, discard in a waste can. DO NOT try to wash it down the sink. If it dries on carpet or clothing, cover it with a cloth soaked in vinegar to de-gel it, then wash the area with detergent and water. GLARCH Measure 1/2 cup liquid white school glue into bowl. I get the best results with Elmer's School Glue. Measure 1/4 cup Sta Flo liquid starch into the same bowl. Mix together with a wooden spoon. After the substance becomes too thick to use the spoon, continue mixing with your hands. This works quicker with warm hands. Glarch may be stored in a plastic bag. Wash all supplies.

The "fresh-water lobsters" of Missouri streams have as much flavor and nutrition as their sea-going cousins.
    by Kathy Love Conservationist Staff
Crayfish are first cousins to the highest of American haute cuisine, the lobster. Prepared in a similar manner, and in as wide a range of dishesfrom Cajun to Yankeecrayfish can be substituted for lobster in many recipes. Nutritionally, they contain the same amount of protein as their sea-going cousin, and more phosphorous than any other fish flesh. Since a large part of the diet of crayfish consists of carrion and vegetable manner, it is essential that crawdads caught for human consumption come from pollution-free water. There are over 500 species of crayfish worldwide, ranging in size from the American dwarf crayfish, found in Missouri, which grows only up to 1.3 inches in length, to the Tasmanian crayfish, which grows up to eight pounds. Crayfish flourish in waters 55 to 60 degrees F. They shed their exoskeletons in proportion to their rate of growth, as often as three or four times a year. The average life expectancy for a crawdad is about three years, but the "granddaddies" may live to be seven or eight.

    159. About Sourdough Starter
general information about how sourdough works and how to make a sourdough starter. The author also explains how to feed a sourdough starter, dehydrate and reconstitute it. Instructions for converting recipes calling for commercial yeast into sourdough recipes are included.
    http://home.teleport.com/~packham/sourdo.htm
    SOURDOUGH and SOURDOUGH STARTER
by Richard Packham Sourdough starter is used in baked goods because it contains an organism that is able to produce the gasses that give baked goods their lightness. This organism is a type of yeast, and is alive (until killed by the heat of baking). It feeds on carbohydrates (such as flour or sugar) and produces gas and alcohol (which the old "sourdough" miners called "hooch") as byproducts. It must be fed and protected from extremes of temperature and anything else which might kill it. Given proper care and conditions, it will live and reproduce itself for years. (My starter is over 35 years old.) You may increase the amount of starter simply by adding more flour and water, in the proportion of one cup of water to a heaping cup of flour, and letting it stand for 8 to 24 hours. The mixture does not have to be smooth; a few small lumps will disappear as it stands. Store the starter loosely covered in the refrigerator, preferably in a plastic container. Never use a metal container - metal seems to inhibit its growth. Glass can be dangerous unless the cover is loose enough to allow the gasses being produced to escape. It will stay "active" for as long as four weeks without attention. If you haven't used it in the last month or so, you should probably feed it by stirring it well and then discarding about half of it and replacing the discarded amount with the same amount of flour and water (or slightly more flour). Allow it to sit for a few hours, and then refrigerate it.
