Format Reading and discussion oriented, with one assignment and a final project. Prerequisites: An undergraduate computer architecture course. A previous computer graphics course would be very helpful, but is not required (I will quickly review the relevant material). Good programming skills or a very tolerant project partner are a must. I will attempt to adjust the course somewhat to match the typical background of attendees, but given the variety of material covered in the course, it is expected that students will take initiative on their own to fill gaps in background knowledge. The following graphic samples are all software, programmed in MS-DOS. They all run real-time , even on a class machine ( on which most of these were programmed ). Each real time computer graphic engine is similar to those required for interactive video games and simulation software. None of the following effects are created via 3D graphic accelerators. Each of these effects is 100% responsible for the display of every individual pixel, manually computed by CPU directly from my software. Also, none of the programs use a graphics API ( such as DirectX or OpenGL ) which would perform most of the calculations for you. Any 3D program uses the basic 3D formula for converting a 3D point into a 2D screen position which I developed myself in grade VIII without the aid of textbooks or any other graphic / art sources. All the effects included tweaked VGA modes, hi-color modes, and other video card tricks are 100% software.
All code is original and self-taught . Pictures are shrunk down from the actual screen shots. All effects, including hi-color effects, run under standard VGA. Some run under any non-standard Mode-X resolution (

Stylized Depiction to Enhance Legibility
Other Rendering Styles ... Other While I have not done research in this area myself, I am fascinated by the computer graphic technique known as non-photorealistic rendering. (Admittedly it is a little odd to name a field of study by what it is not. Stanislaw Ulam apparently once remarked: "The study of non-linear physics is like the study of non-elephant biology. ") My list of links on this topic began to outgrow its place on my bookmarks list, so I created this page to give them a home, and perhaps to help other people interested in the field. To better describe the kinds of techniques listed here, and to define the informal taxonomy used on this page, it is helpful to note that techniques for stylized depiction can be classified along the axis from interactive to fully automatic, and that there are three distinct types of input for these

Home Admissions ... VECG is a research theme within the VIVE research group. The research spans the range from real-time computer graphics rendering to human factors issues in virtual reality. A common theme is that we want to understand how to make virtual reality effective . So we carry out experiments with participants, in order to examine just what makes a difference to their sense of presence in the virtual environment, and their sense of co-presence with other people. We research on the issues involved in populating our virtual environments with crowds. This is not only a technically interesting challenge, but we know from our experimental work that empty environments, places without people don't work. We are very interested in making our virtual characters 'realistic', so that you will want to engage with them. But what does 'realistic' mean in this context? It does not mean photo- or geometrically accurate realism. It does mean virtual people that carry out those tiny gestures and movements that we take so much for granted in everyday experience that we don't even notice them. We carry out research on real-time rendering , and are particularly interested in how real-time can be maintained even in the context of global illumination for realistic lighting.

"God Help us when our lives are in the hands of engineers." - Ian Malcom, Jurassic Park More pages: New demo Monday, September 5, 2005 Finally a new demo! There hasn't been much activity here for a while, but now I have a new demo here at last. Lots of people have asked for a long time why I don't have any HDR demo on my site. There's no particular reason for that, I just hadn't bothered writing one. But now I've covered that as well. Of course, it's complete with the butter-on-my-glasses blur effect that has come to characterize HDR and actually to some extent get confused with HDR. Anyway, the main selling point of this demo is that it doesn't go the lazy route and uses FP16 just because "that's HDR" as is a common misconcept out there. Instead it's using a DXT1/L16 combination that's faster and uses less memory space and can be filtered all the way down to R300. The main render target is FP16 though. Anyway, enough talking. Now go grab it.
