TIPS FOR IMPROVING YOUR READING SPEED
The purpose of this section is to teach you how to increase you reading speed. Shortly we will be adding a section for reading BETTER as opposed to FASTER. We all have a capacity for reading much faster than we typically do. Our reading speed changes as we go through life. When we are in high school, we go through about two hundred words a minute. We get to college and, because we have to read faster due to more time constraints and a much greater amount to read, we read faster. Most people in college average about 400 words per minute. Then we get out of college, and now we don't have to read so fast. There are no longer time constraints, and we can read slow and easy. We find ourselves dropping back down to about 200 words per minute. The key to improving our speed is to SIGHT READ, and that's what we are going to show you how to do. We are going to start being pure sight readers. Obstacles get in our way, however. What do we mean by obstacles? Well, these are things that impede us from reading faster. REGRESSIONS are the most wasteful. Regressions are going back over words. You can call it back-skipping if you want. You go back over words you previously read. People do it for two reasons. Initially we read it to clarify the meaning of what we're reading. We want to be sure of the words we read as we go along. In our early years in school, when we were first taught - incorrectly - to "read slowly and carefully," it became easy to go back over words.

The most important thing to know about The Literacy Company (TLC) is our mission. To assist our clients in solving the puzzle of how to
become a fluent reader. Fluent readers read better
and faster, with improved comprehension and recall. The Literacy Company believes everyone has the ability to become a fluent reader. Unfortunately, fluency has become synonymous with oral reading proficiency. The Literacy Company recognizes based on research and data, that fluent silent reading proficiency is achieved by a completely opposite set of skills. Slow readers read one word at a time with each eye fixation and tend to vocalize words as they read. Fluent (silent) readers see, read and process groups of words with each eye fixation. According to John Anthony O’Brien, Ph.D., professor and author of Silent Reading, “…records reveal the physiological basis of the superiority of silent over oral reading in point of both speed and comprehension.” Based on academic, theoretic and pedagogical (the art and science of teaching) principles, silent reading skills produce true reading fluency. TLC's Credentials: The Literacy Company, founded in 1997 with nearly six years dedicated to research and development, is the developer of The Reader's Edge®, an affordable, easy to use, reading solution that teaches silent reading skills, for fluent reading, to all ages. The Literacy Company is providing the means for everyone to unlearn the habits of slow readers and learn the habits of fluent readers leading to cultural literacy.

An Introduction to Speed Reading
If you are an average reader without any knowledge of Speed Reading Techniques your reading speed is probably in the region of 200-300 words per minute. You might feel a little smug at having what appears to be quite a reasonable reading speed but before you congratulate yourself, understand that despite being the average, this is extremely slow and way below what we as human beings are capable of achieving. Speeds in excess of several thousand words per minute as a minimum are well within the capability of most readers and what prevents us from achieving these seemingly incredible levels is first of all our technique, secondly practice and thirdly and probably the most crucial factor is one of belief. Now I don't have time to deal with your beliefs but you can make some dramatic improvements in your reading speed and reading effectiveness simply by improving your basic technique ie the way you actually use your eyes and your brain to read words. Many people when asked to explain how they think the eye moves across a page of words will describe smooth jumps from one word to the next and to the next, starting at the left hand edge of a line of words travelling to the right hand extremity of that line and then starting again at the first word of the next line and so on.

Speed reading programs have been around for a while. They use methods developed over 50 years ago. There are many speed reading programs out there, most are spin-offs of the finger pointing speed reading systems. Reading speed improvement is possible but which is the best way for you to improve?

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS - AND - REMEMBER TO PRACTICE EACH DAY FOR 15 MINUTES
When you were taught to read, the method used was to have you look closely at each word in the sentence and pronounce it. In this way, the teacher knew you were reaching your goals. What you were learning has been carried into your adult life:
    • Look at the word
    • Pronounce it (either silently or out loud)
    • Look at the next word
Although this method of reading was perfect for learning the skill it has been found to be the slowest method of reading a volume of text. Two things are slowing your reading speed down: Mentally pronouncing the word, and, only concentrating on one word at a time.
Speed-reading is the process of viewing text one line at a time instead of one word at a time and then moving on to the next line without taking time to pronounce the words in your mind. It's that simple: View the entire line of text and DO NOT mentally pronounce the words you see.
THE WAY YOU LEARNED TO READ AS A CHILD THE WAY WE LEARN TO SPEED-READ AS AN ADULT
This seems difficult at first but with a little practice and repetition (the same kind of practice used to learn to read in the beginning), you can learn the secret to reading at several hundreds of words per minute instead of 100 or 150 words per minute.

For over two years, I have had the hobby of teaching speed reading to people in the community where I live. So far I have taught over 300 people (most of them children) to speed read.
As a result of the many classes I’ve taught, I’ve made some observations:
    • Children learn the speed reading skill far more easily than adults.
    • Children master the skill far more completely than adults do. It literally becomes a natural part of them if they learn it by age 12 or so, just as much as speaking.
English is a natural part of them.

Students clock in at speed-reading event
    By Zachary Binney
    February 4, 2005 in News
The average Chicago student spends 20 hours per week studying, so it’s not surprising to have too little time to peruse a chapter of organic chemistry and 75 pages of Rousseau every Sunday night. The Student Counseling and Resource Service, however, hoped to make this feat easier, offering to students a crash course in speed-reading on Tuesday. With a standing-room only crowd, the speed-reading workshop was a huge success, drawing students from all disciplines together to work on skills many haven’t thought about since grade school. Sherri Wandler, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the SCRS and the workshop’s organizer for the past four years, explained why even the average University of Chicago student reads at only 240 words per minute (wpm). Most people are “sub-vocalizers,” they speak each word to themselves as they read it. Since Americans speak at 210 to 220 wpm, it is not surprising that the average reading speed is just above it. “This is the biggest problem,” she said. “You should try to hear the word in your head but not say it,” Wandler coached. These “auditory readers” can scan about 400 wpm.
