Do you read fast enough? Do you need an edge to satisfy the reading demands this "Information Age" has placed upon most of us? Would it help you to double your reading speed right now? One of my favorite tricks when I was teaching Psychology of Learning to graduate students was to offer them "Dr. Clarke's Two-Minute Course in Speed-Reading." I'd give them a timed reading test before, tell them the first technique I'm about to tell you. Then I'd time them while they first practiced the technique. Everyone improved their time immediately while learning the technique. You will, too.
O.K., here's the secret of how to double your reading speed, right now, quick and dirty.
First, if you are reading this on the web page, stop and take a moment to print this article in hard copy. Then, grab a standard size bookmark (most are 8" x 2" or 6" x 1 1/2") or fold a sheet of paper to that size. Now, while reading the rest of this article (and from now on, everything else you read) place the bookmark lengthwise across the page with the lower edge immediately above the line of text you are currently reading. As you finish reading a line, pull the bookmark down to cover that line.

Do you have any tips and teaching ideas that help improve reading speeds? What problems do your students have? Contact us Your answers Thair J. Rahman, Iraq
I think that I have the same problem. Most of my students if not all of them want to improve their reading speed but they are lacking behind. Anyhow my piece of advice for all English language teachers is to tell their students to read with their eyes before they read with their voices.
Mei, China
Students can improve their reading speed by learning speed-reading skills and doing more practice, as practice makes perfect. Speed reading skills, on the other hand, are closely connected with the students' level of grammar, vocabulary, understanding of the particular cultural background in which the reading is introduced, etc. Thus if students want to improve reading skills, they have to have learn aspects of the language that are related to reading speed. I do not know the levels of the students, but I recommend you a set of texts-College English Band 1 and 2 by Shanghai Fudan University. In them there are speed reading materials and some reading skills are in the intensive textbooks.

The only problem is that some sites claimed they can get your speed up to 25,000 wpm!! How can a human even comprehend ~415 words per second. Even the more conservative sources varied from 500 maximum to a 4 digit number. I took a single reading speed test, read it at a normal pace, there was not one word I couldn't understand, and I got 350 wpm with 100% comprehension. Now granted that was just one test, but that's about where my reading rate would be. I would like to improve it, but I don't know which sources, if any, have their facts right. 500 to 25,000 is a big range. I ask someone with more experience to please tell me more on this subject. What would the real maximum be? How long would it take to get up to that speed? What are good ways to do it? manticore

Do you wish to dramatically increase your reading speed?
Reading Speed is not just something you were born with. It is trainable and able to be developed just like any other faculty. Moreover, reading is to the brain as aerobic training is to the body - by increasing your reading speed you will likely find yourself with better concentration and memory, sharper thinking and analytical skills, and able to save days, weeks, or even months of time keeping up with your reading. If you are like most people then you will have a stack of unread reports or articles in your inbox or desk drawer. These regularly get moved to the unread pile of magazines and newspapers in the corner of the room, next to your book shelf full of books and textbooks, of which most have only been read to chapter 3. If this describes you then you are one of the millions of people that could benefit from learning how to read faster. Buzan's speed reading techniques have been shown to not only increase your reading speed, but to also allow better retention and comprehension of the things you read. Tony Buzan's speed reading techniques are based upon forty years research into how your eyes actually function and upon how your eyes interact with your brain. Buzan's techniques are entirely natural and more in tune with how your mind actually works that many of the 'ordinary' slow reading techniques that most people use.

Speed reading is a bit like running - or playing any sport for that matter - you can learn the techniques, but to get good at it and build up speed, you really need to practise. Athletes train for hours every day, but your reading speed will improve if you practise these techniques for as little as 10 minutes per day. Speed reading techniques can be applied to all sorts of texts - short or long: emails, letters, text books, revision notes...You might use some of the tips already without even realising it. For example, when you are choosing a book to buy, you might have a flick through to judge the language, style or size of writing.

To many second language readers, reading is a suffocatingly slow process; yet developing rapid reading, an essential skill for all students, is often neglected in the classroom. Data from Segalowitz, Poulsen, and Komoda (1991:15) indicate that the second language (L2) reading rates of highly bilingual readers are "30% or more slower than L1 reading rates." These data are also supported by Weber (1991), who points out that highly skilled bilinguals typically have a slower reading rate in a second language. Perkins and Pharis (1980) state that average ESL readers are well below average native English speakers in reading ability. Jensen (1986:106) indicates that "at the end of a reading course, even advanced ESL students may read only 100 words per minute or less."
Research findings on the value of rapid reading The earliest studies conducted with native English speakers indicated that rapid reading was only a skimming strategy used to cover the reading material (Brown, Inouye, Barrus, and Hansen 1981). Yet, later studies show that readers achieved not only rapid-reading skills but also better comprehension when specifically taught rapid-reading techniques (Cranney, Brown, Hansen, and Inouye 1982).

Developing Reading Speed by Cheryl Champeau de Lopez

In 1921 Arthur Gates determined that reading comprehension and reading speed are two distinct but related factors, both of which should be included in a reading program. LaBerge and Samuels (1985) developed this idea in their model, emphasizing the importance of automaticity of certain components of the reading process. Basically, they theorize that readers who are able to identify words quickly (“automatically”) will comprehend better, since they can then devote most of their attention to comprehension, i.e., the meanings and relationships of those words. Timed readings and paced readings There are basically two types of exercises: timed readings and paced readings. In timed readings, students read at their own speed. When they have finished the text, they calculate their reading speed by dividing the number of words in the text by the time they utilized. For example, if they took seven minutes and forty-five seconds to read a 1000-word text, their speed would be: 1000/7.75 = 129 words per minute. In paced readings, the teacher controls the time allowed for the readings. In these exercises a mark is placed in the margin of the text next to the line containing each 100th word. The teacher then notifies the reader, perhaps with a tap on the desk, when his eye should be at each mark, according to the speed the teacher is pacing. For example, to pace at 200 words per minute, the tap would be every 30 seconds.

According to a researcher (sic) at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be at the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole.
One day I tried reading this text and realized that when I read it fast, I am able to read it very easily. Then I thought of making an application which can randomly shuffle the words of a whole essay and try to increase my reading speeds. After developing it, I thought to open it up up for everybody, to use and benefit from it. I hope that this will help you to increase your reading speeds and comprehending abilities. If you find it useful, please let me know. I will be glad to hear from you.

Improving reading speed centers around improving reading comprehension as reading speed increases. The key to improving reading speed is the ability to recognize by sight a large vocabulary of words without having to sound out words. The rapid reader takes in several words at a time rather than individual words, and deducts meaning from the phrase.
If reading speed is slow, then a reading skills assessment is recommended.

    Speed reading
Speed reading is a method of reading rapidly by assimilating several words or phrases at a glance or by skimming. Speed reading or rapid reading is a selective reading process in which a reader increases their reading rate while attempting to retain as much reading comprehension of the text as possible. This can be helpful when looking for specific information. Courses and books on speed reading, often sold through popular psychology literature, sometimes promote simple skimming habits rather than comprehension or retention. While this increases reading speed it results in a significant decrease in comprehension (under 50%) compared to normal reading for comprehension (over 75%). Someone who speed reads and/or advocates the use of speed reading is called a "speed reader", or "super reader". The psychologists and educational specialists working on the visual acuity question devised what was later to become an adopted icon of early speed reading courses, the tachistoscope. The tachistoscope is a machine designed to flash images at varying rates on a screen. The experiment started with large pictures of aircraft being displayed for participants. The images were gradually reduced in size and the flashing-rate was increased. They found that, with training, an average person could identify minute images of different planes when flashed on the screen for only one-five-hundredth of a second. The results had implications for reading, and thus began the research into the area of reading improvement.
