Reading Faster
by Ron Kurtus (revised 10 January 2001) Students often must read and comprehend a tremendous amount of material. Being able to read rapidly is an important skill that will make school work easier, as well as help you advance in your career. Most speed-reading methods are based on skim reading first and in reading groups of words. It takes discipline and a mind-set to become a super reader. Questions you may have about speed-reading include:
  • How important is reading fast? How is skim reading used? How do you read groups of words?
This lesson will try to answer your questions and give you some tips on how to improve your reading speed. There is a mini-quiz at the end of the lesson.
Speed is important
It certainly is more enjoyable to be able to read something rapidly, instead of spending what seems like forever struggling through the words.

of Science and Technology English Advice Sheets IMPROVING READING SPEED "I read very slowly."
"I tend to read the same line over and over again."
"I have loads of readings to do and I don't think I would ever finish them." Do these comments sound familiar to you? If yes, don't feel bad because you are reading in a foreign language. When people read in a foreign language, very often, they don't have enough confidence in their text interpretation; and therefore, they usually read more slowly than they do in their own language. After these words of comfort and reassurance, of course, you still want to improve your reading speed. Before you read on, consider the following: How fast (or how slowly) do I read? It is important to measure your reading speed before and after your practice in speed reading so that you know how much you have achieved. To do so,
  • Choose two reading passages of about the same length and the same difficulty level. (For convenience sake, choose two passages from "Practical Faster Reading" in the SAC.)

Usability News Reading Online Text: A Comparison of Four White Space Layouts by Barbara Chaparro J. Ryan Baker A. Dawn Shaikh
Spring Hull
... Laurie Brady Summary: In this study, reading performance with four white space layouts was compared. Margins surrounding the text and leading (space between lines) were manipulated to generate the four white space conditions. Results show that the use of margins affected both reading speed and comprehension in that participants read the Margin text slower, but comprehended more than the No Margin text. Participants were also generally more satisfied with the text with margins. Leading was not shown to impact reading performance but did influence overall user preference. Few recommendations , however, are provided for the amount of white space for online text passages such as short stories, news articles, or online novels. To examine the effects of white space on reading performance this study compared four white space layouts that manipulated margins and leading. A margin was defined as the white space surrounding the text passage on the left, right, top, and bottom. For purposes of this study, margins on a web page were manipulated such that 10 mm of white space surrounded the text (Margin) or 2 mm of white space surrounded the text (No Margin).

Usability News The Effects of Line Length on Reading Online News By A. Dawn Shaikh Summary: This study examined the effects of line length on reading speed, comprehension, and user satisfaction of online news articles. Twenty college-age students read news articles displayed in 35, 55, 75, or 95 characters per line (cpl) from a computer monitor. Results showed that passages formatted with 95 cpl resulted in faster reading speed. No effects of line length were found for comprehension or satisfaction, however, users indicated a strong preference for either the short or long line lengths. Introduction The amount of text-based information available online is steadily increasing. Universities are offering more online classes; publishers are releasing more online books and journals; and consumers are gathering online news, weather, and product information daily. Therefore, the examination of the factors that influence the readability of online text is very important. In a recent survey, Shaikh and Chaparro (2004) evaluated the reading habits of Internet users across five document types (journal articles, news, newsletters, literature, and product information) and found that users preferred to read journal articles in printed form, but other documents such as online news, newsletters, and product reviews in online formats. Purpose Shaikh and Chaparro (2004) found that 62% of respondents preferred to read news onscreen rather than on paper. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of line length on reading performance of online news articles. This study investigated the effects of four line lengths (35, 55, 75, and 95 cpl) on reading speed, comprehension, and satisfaction.

How to Increase Reading Speed 300% in 20 Minutes
by Adaptagenix DC Staff This article is a condensed overview of "how to increase reading speed" principles taught to undergraduates of Princeton University in 1998 at the PX Project in Princeton, New Jersey. The PX Project, a single 3-hour cognitive experiment, produced an average increase in reading speed and efficiency (RE) of 386%. The PX Protocol was tested with 6 languages, and even dyslexics were conditioned to read technical material at over 3,000 words-per-minute (wpm), or 10 pages per minute and one page every 6 seconds. By comparison, the average reading speed in the US is 200-300 wpm (1/2 to 1 page per minute), with the top 1% of the population reading over 400 wpm.

Wikipedia
speed reading Speed reading is a method of reading rapidly by assimilating several words or phrases at a glance or by skimming. Speed reading or rapid reading is a selective reading process in which a reader increases their reading rate while attempting to retain as much reading comprehension of the text as possible. This can be helpful when looking for specific information. Courses and books on speed reading, often sold through popular psychology literature, sometimes promote simple skimming habits rather than comprehension or retention. While this increases reading speed it results in a significant decrease in comprehension (under 50%) compared to normal reading for comprehension (over 75%).

Try Stopwatch Reading!
If you can spare just 10 minutes a day over a 6 week period to read an easy paperback, you can improve your reading efficiency without a great deal of effort. Here's how: Choose a fiction or non-fiction paperback: one you've always wanted to read but just never had time to.
  • It's best to choose a book that you consider "easy reading" and one where you will be satisfied knowing only the main ideas and not all the details. You will also need 2-3 paper clips and a stop-watch or timer.
Day 1: Set your timer for 10 minutes.
  • Read as much as you can of your paperback during that time. When the timer goes, stop reading and insert a paperclip at the top of the last page you read. Then close the book and summarize out loud everything you remember reading. Put your book away until the next day.
Day 2: Count the number of pages you read on Day 1 (from the beginning of the book to the paper clip you inserted). Then, starting at the paperclip:
  • Count off the same number of pages plus one more and insert a second paper clip.

There are many theories of reading. Some regard reading as a skill which relies
heavily on our visual perception and ability to recognise words, letter shapes,
sound patterns and so on. Other theories regard reading much like looking at a
picture, where we read to get the whole message and the bits and pieces, like the
separate brush strokes of a picture, are not singularly important.
Reading instruction often focuses on items of knowledge - words, letters,
sounds. Most people respond to this type of teaching. They search for links
between the items and they relate new discoveries to old knowledge. They

by John Bailey
John Bailey From the Editor: The following article first appeared in the Spring 2003 issue of the NFB Vigilant , the publication of the NFB of Virginia. John Bailey is first vice president of the Virginia Association to Promote the Use of Braille. John learned Braille in his later years after his vision began to fail. He has made Braille an important part of his daily routine. He writes about several successful techniques that can get people beyond the Braille reading speed plateau. Most Braille readers would love to increase our reading speed. We know of those who have mastered the techniques well enough to achieve Braille reading speeds of several hundred words a minute. Although it would be nice, it is not necessary for everyone to read Braille at lightning speed in order to use it productively. If your only use for Braille is to mark objects for easier identification or to take quick notes, lightning-fast Braille reading speed may not be important to you; however, for those who need to digest a lot of information quickly, any increase in reading speed can be very beneficial. Unfortunately, many of us have reached a plateau in increasing our Braille reading speed. Many of us have struggled to overcome a speed limit of about sixty words a minute. The truth is that surpassing the sixty-wpm barrier takes work and the honing of specific skills. By using the proven techniques outlined below in combination with daily practice, the sixty-wpm barrier can be broken.

[PHOTO/CAPTION: Susan Ford] [PHOTO/CAPTION: Ramona Walhof] Braille Reading Speed Are You Willing To Do What It Takes? by Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof From the Editor: Susan Ford and Ramona Walhof are sisters. As you will read, between them they have a broad range of reading and Braille-teaching experience. Susan now lives in Missouri and is an active and contributing Federation leader wherever she goes. Ramona, of course, is Secretary of the National Federation of the Blind and President of the NFB of Idaho. This is what they say: Many Braille readers have never been encouraged to work to achieve good speed. Slow reading is a disadvantage throughout life and causes the reader to under-use and undervalue the reading skill. But there is no need to continue forever as a slow reader. Some Braille readers develop a speed of 200 to 400 words per minute as small children. They will retain that speed with little or no effort. Braille readers who could not attain good speed as young children, however, can do so with some work, and it is certainly worth the effort. It is also desirable for teachers of blind children to encourage good Braille-reading speed. Susan Ford developed good Braille reading speed as a small child and retains it; Ramona Walhof had fair speed as a child and has had to work to improve. Our experiences in reading Braille and teaching for years have given us some ideas which may help others in achieving increased speed. Try these suggestions and talk with other good Braille readers. You should experience significant improvement.
