    If you just hop into a strange car and race across a city you've never visited, you'll probably be in for a rough ride that doesn't get you where you want to go. The same thing is true of reading. Knowing how the brain effectively speeds the mental processing of print and knowing how to find what you want produce the best results. People have researched the behaviors of rapid readers to see how the eyes behave and how the eyes and brain work together to produce such good results. Consider the following points as you search for a way to increase your speed and efficiency. Before You Read Preview the selection you need to read to see what it is about in general and to plan how you will attack it. For example, assume your psychology assignment is to read chapter seven, pages 325 - 350. To preview you read the chapter title, the introductory paragraphs, and the section headings and subheadings. Perhaps you notice that the chapter does not have any concluding paragraphs; it just ends. You notice it is about early childhood mental development and that each section explains a different theory. No one section appears to be complex, so you can read each section at about the same rate of speed. You decide to use a hi-liter to mark names and definitions. This professor does not give chapter tests but expects you to participate in class discussion after the lecture, so you will read primarily for the main idea about each theory.

    • Reading rates
    Each type of reading has a different rate;
    an exciting novel is a quicker read than a text in biology. Text books vary in how well they are written;
    as a consequence some are more difficult to read. Each semester, time yourself reading a chapter
    in each of your text books. See how many pages an hour you can read. Once you have an accurate estimate of your reading rate, you can better plan your reading time and studying time.
    • Comprehension
    Scan the chapter first.
    Identify the sections to which the author devotes the most amount of space. If there are lots of diagrams for a particular concept, then that must also be an important concept. If you're really pressed for time, skip the sections to which the least amount of space is devoted. Read the first sentence of every paragraph
    more carefully than the rest of the paragraph.

    Introduction
    The somewhat controversial subject of speed reading arose to public attention in 1957 with Evelyn Wood's Reading Dynamics program. It introduced the world to the concept of waving one's hands in wavy patterns over printed text and "absorbing" every word at speeds in excess of 1000 words per minute with "100% comprehension". Companies even got a testimonial from President John F. Kennedy to promote the practice. Since then there have been literally thousands of variations and schools of speed reading, each with their own gimmicks. A typical reader reads at approximately 240 words per minute, and a typical college student averages around 300 words per minute. Speed reading programs typically claim to boost reading rates into the thousands of words per minute with good or full comprehension. In contrast to such dramatic claims, reading researchers generally have found that speed reading training teaches relatively ineffective forms of skimming and scanning that provide no feedback to the reader about his or her actual comprehension; this self feedback is considered a vital aspect of reading because the better you can assess your own comprehension, the more likely you will read effectively. With little or no feedback, most speed readers believe that they fully understand what they have just read. The reality is that most speed readers generally score relatively low on academic

    BRIEF SUGGESTIONS FOR INCREASING SPEED AND EFFECTIVENESS OF READING
  • CONSIDERATIONS AND LIMITATIONS
    Slow, word-by-word, analytical reading is an essential part of some reading tasks. Often, however, when time demands and purpose permits, the reader must possess the capacity to "switch gears" i.e., to absorb the ideas and information in books at more rapid speeds. By no means should this high-level "speed reading" be interpreted as applicable to all types of reading situations. Its development will, however, enable the mature reader to add an additional dimension to the scope of his/her current reading skills. CAUSES OF SLOW READING SPEEDS
    • Individual variables intelligence, motivation, physiological and psychological traits.
      Deficiencies in vocabulary and comprehension levels required by the particular reading material. A student who has difficulty understanding what he/she reads will not be helped by learning to misunderstand faster. A student who is hampered by an inadequate vocabulary will not be helped by learning to skip any faster through unknown or vaguely defined words.
      Most frequent causes of unnecessarily slow speeds when the causes listed in A and B above are at adequate levels: Inflexibility the tendency to read everything the same way regardless of what it is, why it is being read, etc.

    Abstract
    Introduction Background Studies Method

    The following hypothesis were tested in the study:
    Learners in the 'extensive' group will achieve significantly faster reading speeds than those in the 'intensive' group as measured on relatively easy, non-problematic texts. Learners in the 'extensive' group will achieve significantly higher scores on a test of reading comprehension containing texts at an appropriate level, than those in the 'intensive' group.
    In measuring reading speed, subjects were first assured that the exercise would not form part of their assessment and they were then told to read at normal speed. They were given a time limit of three minutes and told that when the researcher banged on the desk they were to mark the word they had reached with a cross (x). Measurements were taken twice using selected texts (see appendix 1). Speeds were then calculated in words per minute and tabulated. For the reading comprehension tests, a time limit of 30 minutes was set for each test. Brief examples of how to complete test items were provided, examination conditions established, and the tests administered. All tests were administered prior to the study in September 1993, and again on completion in February 1994.

    I am reading the Speed Reading Book by Tony Buzan and I am unsure about the Meta-Guiding Technique. Can you explain it?
    I can't be bothered to go through a book on speed reading, what tips can you give me that I can apply now?
    ANSWERS to above questions: 1. Many people do find that their first stumbling block is the Meta-Guiding Technique(MGT) particularly if they have grasped the earlier information quickly. The Technique has many uses and I would suggest that at this stage of your speed reading career (I assume that this is the first time that you have tried improving your reading speed) you should use it to improve your "basic" reading speed. (By "basic" I mean grouping words together on each line for each eye fixation.) What do I mean?

    How To Test Your Reading Speed and Reading Comprehension
    This reading speed test is designed to measure the average English reading speed in the U.S.A. which is slightly less than 200 words per minute. When you are ready, scroll down the page so that the entire test area is visible in your window. Click once on the start button and start reading. After 20 seconds a pop up window will appear and your computer will beep to indicate the end of the test. Note where you stopped reading; to the right is the number of Words Per Minute (WPM) at which you read this passage. (Please note that your reading speed on your computer screen may be slightly lower than if you were reading a book. Most people read slower on their computer screen, and for this reason even our online course requests that you print out all reading examples.) Read Instructions before testing.

    Speed Reading The Net
    Vocabulary is key to speed reading
    The first time I heard the term Speed Reading I wasn't quite sure what to think. I was really dumbfounded when I heard people were able to read at 2000 to 3000 words per minute. Was it real? I wanted to find out. What follows is what I have learned from my own experience. The first thing I learned was that speed reading has been around for quite awhile. In fact some people are speed readers and do not even realize it. Evidently this is how Evelyn Wood, the quote on quote founder of speed reading found out about it. One of her instructors read through a paper of hers at amazing speed. She asked him how he did it and he said he wasn't completely sure. Evelyn's research lead to the following key points.
    • Slow readers read one word at a time. Speed readers read groups of words with every eye fixation. Speed readers tend to have higher comprehension because the mind is focused almost entirely on reading.
    The concepts are pretty basic. In fact if you think about it reading one word at a time slows you down to about what you can vocalize (say outloud). This is about 250 words per minute (max). The great thing about speed reading is that everyone has the ability to become a speed reader. In fact a great demonstration can be found at
