Summer Reading Lists Abound on the Web!
Today, Education World surveys some of the best children's summer reading lists on the Web. Here, you'll find an overview of great lists that you or your school's staff might use to create your own summer reading program. Included: Tips for parents plus ideas for publishing students' book reviews.
Every educator knows it. So do most parents. Summer reading is essential for kids! Reading experts note that most young readers suffer a backslide in reading skills during summer downtime. But that needn't be the case. Families can make reading a priority during the summer months, and children will learn that people never take a vacation from learning.

About the HAISLN Recommended Reading List
This list of titles has been compiled by librarians at member schools of the Houston Area Independent Schools Library Network (HAISLN). It includes both fiction and nonfiction books by some of the best authors for children and young adults. Books on this list are evaluated annually by grade-level committees. Committee members rely on recommendations from standard, professionally prepared evaluation aids and on input from students and teachers, as well as the collective HAISLN expertise. A conscious effort is made to appeal to the broad range of interests, maturity levels, and reading abilities of students. In most cases the number of books by any given author is limited to one or two per grade level list. An older title with superior literary quality may remain on the list despite newer publications by the same author. Before reading a recommended author's book that does not appear on the student’s grade list, readers should be aware that authors often write for multiple interest and age levels. Books that are part of a series are also noted, but not all books in a series are appropriate at the indicated grade level. Students may find that some titles that are required reading for their classes appear on this list. Be advised that if a book for required reading is selected for independent reading, it may have to be re-read with the class at a later date.

Last updated: 24 Sep 2005 Welcome to my site where I showcase my writing. I have completed an 85,000-word novel for which I am seeking representation. I am working on my next, which like the first, is set in contemporary India. If you are a literary agent or a publisher and would like to see more, I will be happy to oblige. At your request, I can send you the synopsis, a partial or the complete manuscript. You can find a brief excerpt from the novel on the WRITING page along with a selection of my short stories. The Indian Writers section is about the writers responsible for that body of literature popularly known as Indian Writing in English. Since writing and reading are irrevocably linked, I have listed the kind of reading that interests me, and have indulged in, on the READING page. I would appreciate any comments or feedback. Thanks for visiting. Paritosh Uttam

Summer Reading Lists 2002
Dear Parents, The Summer Reading lists are a joint project of the Groton Public schools and the Public Libraries of Groton and Mystic. They are designed to encourage students in Groton to make reading a habit, raising both their interests and level of reading. With encouragement and guidance from parents, teachers, school library media specialists, and public librarians, Groton students will achieve the benefits that reading brings. I would like to extend my appreciation to the Groton Public Library for their cooperation and hard work in developing these lists. Also, I would like to ask that all parents and guardians join me this summer by encouraging your children to read..., read..., read.

With the growth of the Internet, there are now many, many, many retailers of both secular and Jewish products on the Internet. This reading list cannot claim to list them all; however, we can identify some of the largest ones. Note that the FAQ makes no claim as to the quality of any of these services. They are likely all good, but the reading list can provide no guarantees. Secular Services The following commercial concerns all provide a large selection of books, including a fair selection of Jewish books: * Amazon. Now you can complete your Jewish library and support the continued development of the Reading Lists at the same time. Alternatively, if you enter Amazon using the URL [8]http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home?tag=socculturej ewish, the reading lists will get credit for your entry. [9]We make it easy. When you see the Amazon graphic (or "[Buy at Amazon: http:...]") on an entry in the reading list, this indicates that the specific book is available for purchase at Amazon.
