GITMO READING LIST: HARRY POTTER TOPS By Michelle Malkin August 08, 2005 08:04 AM Rowan Scarborough of the Washington Times reports: Harry Potter's worldwide popularity is so broad-based that it has become favorite reading for Islamic terror suspects at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay. Lori, who for two years has overseen the detention center's library, said J.K. Rowling's tales about the boy wizard are on top of the request list for the camp's 520 al Qaeda and Taliban suspects, followed by Agatha Christie whodunits. "We've got a few who are kind of hooked on it. A couple have asked if they can see the movie," said Lori, a civilian contractor who asked that her last name not be publicized. Wonder if J.K. Rowling will get a blurb or two from the Gitmo detainees for her next book? On a serious note, as I noted in June, the Gitmo library was also stocked with Jihadi books and other radical Islamist paraphernalia, according to Erik Saar, who served as an army sergeant at Gitmo for six months and co-authored a negative, tell-all book about his experience titled "Inside the Wire."

Summer Reading List
Story by Pitchfork staff Despite being nearly a month away from the solstice, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, a time for students to put Beowulf on the shelf and 9 to 5ers to cherish the extra hours of after-work sunlight. To help kick off this season of sun, here's Pitchfork's guide to spending time in the park, beach, or porch reading the most notable recent music-related books: Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation
By Jeff Chang
St. Martin's Press
Can't Stop Won't Stop isn't the first published history of hip-hop far from it. For years, countless books and PBS specials have mined the music's South Bronx origins, to the point where even hip-hop neophytes can speak with authority about DJ Kool Herc's open-air parties. But rap critic and journalist Jeff Chang casts his net further, exploring the economic, social, and political conditions that birthed the music. Chang begins his story in mid-60s Jamaica, examining the effects that sound-system culture would have on a young Kool Herc, before moving on to the early-70s Bronx gang truce that helped make Herc's legendary parties possible. The chapter about the Bronx gangs crews of teenagers with Warriors -esque names like the Savage Skulls and the Seven Immortals makes for a particularly entertaining read.

Citizen Filmmaking: Following the filmmakers of the 48-Hour Film Project
This made the rounds while I was away: 11 steps to a better brain . Mozart, movement, memory, and...marmite! more... According to research published in 2003, kids breakfasting on fizzy drinks and sugary snacks performed at the level of an average 70-year-old in tests of memory and attention. Beans on toast is a far better combination, as Barbara Stewart from the University of Ulster, UK, discovered. [...] If you can't stomach beans before midday, wholemeal toast with Marmite makes a great alternative. The yeast extract is packed with B vitamins, whose brain-boosting powers have been demonstrated in many studies. Thanks to the lovely Kate, we came home with a little jar of Marmite. The secret, she (and numerous Aussies) told me, is to spread it thinly, very thinly, over butter.
