It's never too early for your child to become familiar with letters and numbers. Sebran's ABC's colorful pictures, pleasant music, and gentle games teach letters, numbers, simple math, and rudiments of reading. The program teaches using either Afrikaans, Breton, Bahasa Indonesian, Croatian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Romanian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish or Swedish (in Swedish, the droll zebra gracing the main screen is called "sebran"). The six simpler exercises display four possible answers. Choose the right one and it becomes a smile; an error gets a frown and a chance to try again. The How Many? counting game introduces the numbers from 1 to 9. These are used in the Add, Subtract, and Multiply matching games, which each function at two levels of difficulty. In Pick A Picture , one of four pictures matches a word; First Letter offers four possible letters completing a word. Your child can employ the skills gained in these exercises to play

Burlington classes designed to give Bantu a head start
By Molly Walsh
Published September 8, 2004
Hamadi Mayange has a big smile and big dreams. He wants to be a doctor when he grows up.
That's an ambitious goal for any 10-year-old boy, but it's especially ambitious for someone like Hamadi, who until now has never had the chance to attend school. A Somali Bantu refugee who moved with his family from a Kenyan refugee camp to Burlington three weeks ago, Hamadi knows just a few words in English and cannot read or write in any language, including his native language, Maay Maay. Most American children Hamadi's age have attended school for five years. When Hamadi walked into Burlington's H.O. Wheeler School on opening day last week, it was his first day of school ever. Hamadi is one of the 51 Bantu students who recently arrived in the United States and are enrolled in Burlington public schools.

Many parents and policy leaders agree that quality childcare and preschool are important for young children, so they come to kindergarten ready to learn. But few can explain what “quality” looks like as well as Sue Bredekamp, a child development expert who helped develop the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s standards for developmentally appropriate practices for young children’s programs.

By ROBERT EMRO, Portsmouth Herald Staff Writer
EXETER - Guy Raymond was 8 years old when his mother died. The younger of his 11 siblings went to live with relatives, but Raymond dropped out of school to help his father work the family's New Brunswick farm. From the age of 14, he supported himself. First as a logger, then as an ironworker, but during that time, Raymond never learned to read. "It was on my mind all that time that someday I was going to do this. It just never happened," said Raymond, now 53. "I kept thinking, `I got to go to school, you know.' " A disabling back injury finally forced Raymond to deal with his lack of education. George Baker, a social worker now retired from the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass., gave him the encouragement he needed. "He said, `You're not stupid ... You're going to go to school.' " Raymond began attending classes, but the only thing he learned was that alcohol and education don't mix. A year after his first attempt, he told Baker of his intention to join Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and to try school again. "He said, `Now you're talking like a man,' " said Raymond. Last September, Raymond celebrated his third year in AA and his third year in the Rockingham County Adult Tutorial Program. "I'm not going to drink again," said Raymond. "There's no way in the world."

Virginia Schools Donate Thousands of Books to Liberia Saturday August 06, 2005 11:59am
More than 400,000 books collected from schools across Virginia are destined for Liberia and the west African country's school system, battered by two decades of bloody civil conflicts.
The books, stacked in a warehouse near Dulles International Airport, are scheduled to arrive in Liberia later this month. More books are stored in a warehouse in Richmond.
The books are earmarked for 150 public, private and parochial schools in a country where just over half of the population over the age of 14 can read and write.
"We have a chance to rebuild their school system," said Del Walters of Leesburg, a news anchor for Baltimore's WMAR-TV. "I can't think of a better model than the school system in Virginia."
He said nearly 50 Virginia school systems offered used or new books to the Books Without Borders project, begun by Walters' daughters, Taylor, 17, and McClaine, 14, Both are avid readers.
