You know, it seems almost too trite to say, but one of the very important things that you can do, and one of the most widely neglected lessons for young children, is to make sure that they're comfortable with their ABCs by the time they get to first grade. They need to be able to recognize them. They need to be able to name them. They need to be able to write them comfortably. I'm not talking about perfectly, but comfortably.
Some letters will be backwards till second grade for some children, that's not the issue. But if they don't have a comfortable familiarity with the letters at the beginning of first grade, there really isn't any way for them to begin to learn to recognize the combinations and permutations of the letters from which we make words.
You have to give children the tools...

Josephine Ensign, UW assistant professor of nursing, reads to her son Jonathan Bowdler and Margaret Kahn at the University Book Store. UW researchers have compared learning to read and do math to mastering how to drive a car, tasks made even more difficult for those with learning disabilities. A new study by University of Washington researchers, comparing children with reading disabilities to those with dual reading and math calculation disabilities, indicates that this inability to rapidly retrieve basic information leads to impaired ability across the three domains of reading, writing and math. The study also provides new evidence that there are distinct subtypes of learning disabilities and that specialized interventions may be required to help children overcome these different kinds of disabilities. These findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association by Julie Busse, a UW educational psychology doctoral student. The results come from a larger study looking at the family genetics of learning disabilities, headed by Virginia Berninger, UW professor of educational psychology. The work is funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

A.C.E. Reading Systems Explanation Sheet
A.C.E. has two programmes for children who do not know how to read.
  • "Preschool with Ace and Christi" also known as Reading Readiness. "ABCs of A.C.E." also known as Learning to Read.
  • Reading Readiness
This programme is also called "Preschool with Ace and Christi" but the term 'pre-school' can be confusing in New Zealand. Most schools in NZ using the A.B.C.'s curriculum use the Reading Readiness programme for their New Entrants students. It incorporates the use of 60 student PACEs covering the five core subjects and has sufficient activities for one year. The PACEs are filled with animal pictures, activities and full-colour picture stories encouraging your child to want to read. He will also learn social skills, the wonders of God's world, and the reality of God's love. It is an excellent preparation for the Learning to Read programme.
    ABCs of A.C.E.
The "Learning to Read" Programme lasts about 12-14 weeks and incorporates 12 PACEs i.e. Word Building PACEs I - 12. It is a multi-sensory, phonetic learning-to- read programme, designed to prepare a child for the individualized instruction of the A.C.E. PACEs. There are cartoon animal, songs and stories. These features help him learn letter sounds alphabet sequence and word relationships. Your child is helped in his physical and character development through poems, displays, and various activities. This programme needs to be followed by the "Advanced Lessons" which is a 2 to 3 week course on blends. Children should not start the ABCs of A.C.E. "Learning to Read" programme until they can achieve 90% on a Reading Readiness Test.

Sticking with the ABCs of reading
The state reading czar tells county educators they should focus on the fundamentals that help children learn to read.
By BARBARA BEHRENDT, Times Staff Writer Published January 19, 2004 INVERNESS - If a neurosurgeon were performing brain surgery, the last thing the patient would want would be for the doctor to get a sudden burst of creativity and deviate from established and accepted procedures. The same can be said of teaching reading. While there is plenty of opportunity for teachers to be creative in their approach and interaction with students, the actual nuts and bolts of teaching a young child how to read are well-established, according to Joseph Torgesen, director of the Florida Center for Reading Research. Intensive instruction on those key areas must be the cornerstone of what the reading teacher does. That becomes even more important for students who might come to school poorly prepared to become beginning readers, Torgesen told a group of about 60 Citrus school administrators, teachers and curriculum specialists during a workshop last week.

The Seattle Early Reading First program was started two years ago, and those working with it say they're surprised by its efficacy.

    Description
    The ABCs of Learning Disabilities
discusses the concept of learning disabilities and major research findings regarding learning disabled children, adolescents, and adults. Beginning with a history and definition of the field, coverage includes subtype classification, memory in the learning disabled, social aspects of learning disabilities, metacognition, reading problems, computation problems, writing skills, assessment, and remediation. Chapters are written in an engaging style, meant to encourage the beginning student to identify the "big picture" and to think about implications of conceptual issues and research data.

    WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY?
WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY? A learning disability is a neurologic disorder that causes difficulties in learning that cannot be attributed to poor intelligence, poor motivation, or inadequate teaching. Dyslexia is perhaps the most common form of learning disability. Learning disabilities may occur in the following academic areas:
    • Language, both spoken and written (often difficulties with reading, writing and spelling); and,
    • Arithmetic (difficulty in performing arithmetic functions or in comprehending mathematical concepts).
As many as 80% of all people with learning disabilities have dyslexia. Dyslexia is often thought to be characterized by writing letters backwards but in fact it is much more. Dyslexia is a "reading disability," and is characterized by an unexpected difficulty in reading by people who possess the intelligence, motivation, and schooling necessary to read. It is a persistent, chronic condition rather than a transient developmental lag. The process of reading involves two processes: decoding the written word and comprehending the word. People with dyslexia usually have no difficulty with comprehension; they generally have adequate reasoning skills, vocabulary and syntax. The problem is that people with dyslexia cannot use these skills until the printed word has first been decoded and identified. For example, a woman may know the precise meaning of the spoken word "eligibility"; however, until she can decode and identify the printed word on the page, she will not be able to use her knowledge of the meaning of the word and it will appear that she does not know the word's meaning. New advances have documented that people with reading disabilities have different pattern of brain activity than individuals without reading disabilities.

The American Heritage Children's Dictionary Books to Build on: A Grade-By-Grade Resource Guide for Parents and Teachers (Core Knowledge Series) Advertisement Children cannot learn to read without an understanding of phonics. All children must know their ABCs and the sounds that letters make in order to communicate verbally. The question in early childhood programs is not whether to teach "phonics" or "whole language learning," but how to teach phonics in context—rather than in isolation—so that children make connections between letters, sounds, and meaning. Phonics should not be taught as a separate "subject" with emphasis on drills and rote memorization. The key is a balanced approach and attention to each child's individual needs. Many children's understanding of phonics will arise from their interest, knowledge, and ideas. Others will benefit from more formal instruction. There are many opportunities to teach the sound a letter makes when children have reason to know. For example, the first letter a child learns typically is the first letter of her name. Some teachers worry that encouraging children to learn through experience and invent their own spellings will not provide them with adequate language skills. But literacy is not so much a skill as a complex activity that involves reading, writing and oral language. Ideally, children should develop literacy through real life settings as they read together with parents or other caring adults. Children begin to make connections between printed words and their representations in the world. Adults should keep in mind that children may learn to read at different paces during kindergarten and first grade. This is true for all children, including those with special needs and those from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. If parents and teachers work together and demonstrate mutual respect, children's learning will be reinforced at home and in the classroom.

    as a measure of learning.
While there is a large amount of reading material for the course, there is a clear departure from the traditional mentality surrounding assigned texts. I remember purchasing my books for the semester and noticing that my anthropology class had the most. At the time, I pushed the thought of numerous hours spent reading and analyzing these books to the back of my mind, not wanting to worry about work to
be had at the moment. In retrospect, it is a good thing I did so, because Professor McKenna assigns the reading of the books and articles with the instruction of reading them like they were a magazine or for leisure. He even hesitates to give us questions on a book until after we have read it, to draw us away from feeling we need to focus on specific aspects of the book.
Professor McKenna embodies the very grade de-emphasis that I champion and to which hooks and Pratt seem to cater. He has successfully been able to attract the interests and questions of students through his engaged pedagogical approach in a way that earns him fame across the campus at Notre Dame. This fame exists because he is a shining beacon amidst students deadened by banking systems of education. His course includes grades just as the others do, but one has to wonder whether the true measure of a

A Back-to-School Checkup Good vision is fundamental to reading; it is vital to seeing such learning tools as the chalkboard, visual aids and videos. In short, good vision is as essential to learning as the ABC's. Unlike a comprehensive exam, a simple vision screening — a distance vision test using a Snellen chart — only identifies 5% of vision problems in children, according to the American Foundation for Vision Awareness. While a vision screening is useful for offering an early indication of problems relating to distance eyesight, they miss other critical vision deficiencies that can impact a child's eye health, development and school and learning performance. However, a comprehensive eye exam measures a number of visual skills that are critical to a child's healthy vision, such as using both eyes as a team, the ability of the eyes to focus properly when reading a book, or viewing a computer, and the ability of the eyes to move properly when reading across a page of print. Making a child's first test a vision test will prepare children to enter school ready to gain the knowledge and skills that will remain with them their entire lives. How well a child can see will have a great impact on how much and/or how quickly they will learn.
