Teaching Maths to ESOL Students: General Principles and Background Reading
Core Teacher Background Reading General Principles
  • Introduction: The Challenge While the language of mathematics may be universal - the language of mathematics instruction is not. The challenge is: How do I teach maths to students whose first language is not English? The magnitude of this challenge becomes evident when we consider a few relevant facts:
    • Mathematical discourse and syntactical structures have a number of features that make it difficult for ESOL students to gauge meaning as they often do not conform to the usual norms of language.
    • Vocabulary in mathematics classrooms not only includes specialised 'maths terms' but also everyday terms that take on new meaning when used in a maths context (e.g. table, column, product). Also, there are the some tricky homophones such as sum and some, addition and audition, angle and ankle, factor and factory (Garbe, 1985).
We will not continue with this list, it would serve only to depress the reader. What we will focus upon are the solutions to these challenges.

Top Ten Principles for Teaching Extensive Reading Richard Day
University of Hawai`i at Manoa and Julian Bamford
Bunkyo University Abstract This article puts forward ten principles for an extensive reading approach to teaching reading. They deal with the nature of extensive reading and the conditions and methodology necessary for its success. In the interests of professional development, the authors encourage teachers to use the principles as a tool to examine their beliefs about reading in general and extensive reading in particular, and the ways they teach reading.
keywords: extensive reading, principles, teaching reading, professional development, teacher beliefs In an article published in 1986, Ray Williams discussed his top ten principles for teaching foreign language reading. He used his top ten to begin his reading seminars by asking participants to evaluate them and add new ones. His purpose, Williams wrote, was to get teachers to examine their own beliefs. The article had its desired impact on us. Now, years later, they remain as stimulating as when we first read them. Consider, for example, his first two principles:
  • In the absence of interesting texts, very little is possible.

INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL FOR SPECIALIZED READING INSTRUCTION
There are two unique aspects of the instructional reading approach advocated in this book. One involves the use of an underlying instructional model as the basis for designing and delivering reading instruction to struggling learners. The second involves the integration of reading instruction with instruction in language and cognitive processes (or thinking). The instructional model for teaching struggling students rests on three legs: 1) the skill areas of reading instruction that must be taught; 2) the stages of reading that students must pass through on their way to attaining adult literacy; and 3) strategic, explicit teaching methods that must be used to develop these skill areas. A graphic showing this instructional model is in Figure 1. Students must master different reading skills at each of the six stages of learning to read, and the skills mastered at one stage are prerequisites for learning the skills at the next stage. This model helps teachers design and provide instruction to develop these skills at each of the six stages using strategic, explicit teaching methods. The model enables teachers to identify

Travel to your favorite countries and visit parks, monuments, universities, or just about anywhere else of interest. Do you enjoy Antarctica, the Caribbean, or the Middle East? It's all in one place called City Net. Are you planning a trip abroad for your students? You will find everything from pictures of your favorite monument to information in the target language on the natural resources and art in your preferred country. This can be done with any age and any language level as most of the countries offer information in both English and the target language. Description: Virutal Tourist is a great motivator. Upon linking, students can either select to view a listing of countries by clicking on the hypertext or type in the name of the place they would like to visit. Work your way through by selecting the country and city to which you would like to travel. Through these adventures your students are able to familiarize themselves with a variety of aspects of the countries chosen. Assign students to be travel agents and clients. They would put together a travel package that would suit the interests of their clients. In Geneva, Switzerland, for example, you can even get contact numbers for airlines and hotel information. Have students call or fax for information: there are local numbers for some of the airlines in your phone book.

These were both posted on the board, so I could take role (using a seating chart) and any other paperwork. Selecting vocabulary words to teach English language learners A student's maximum level of reading comprehension is determined by his or her knowledge of words. This word knowledge allows students to comprehend text. As the teacher, you can explicitly teach word meanings to improve comprehension. However, to know what a word means knowing it in all of the following dimensions:
    • The ability to define a word
    • The ability to recognize when to use that word
    • Knowledge of its multiple meanings
    • The ability to decode and spell that word
For English language learners (ELLs), vocabulary development is especially critical for their ability to read and comprehend texts. The selection of vocabulary words to teach ELLs can be grouped into three tiers. Tier 1 Words Tier 1 words are words that ELLs typically know the concept of in their primary language, but not the label in English. For example, a Tier 1 word might be butterfly . This is a word that English language learners may not know, but it can be easily taught by pointing to a picture of a butterfly during text discussion. Another Tier 1 word might be march (move like a soldier). A word like
