Summer program targets childhood reading
For one ASU researcher, an important key to helping children with their future reading skills rests with a simple language building block - words. "Vocabulary forms an important basis for learning," says Gray, who is in the middle of a three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. "If you don't have the right words, you will have trouble talking to your family, teachers and friends. If you can't get your thoughts across, you will have trouble socially. Reading and writing are based on oral vocabulary and language development." With the help of a second grant, this one from the ASU/Motorola Great Communities program, Gray is putting her research into action to help children who may be at risk for reading deficiencies. The program, Literary Leaps, is being offered through Tempe Elementary School District's (TSD) summer program from 8 a.m. - noon, Monday - Friday, throughout the month of June. It is open to children from all school districts. The project is a partnership between TSD, ASU and the Arizona Literacy and Learning Center.

    Introduction
My interest in using storybooks for teaching English began when I was teaching middle-school students in Korea. My search for material which could provide a basis for conversation and writing in my classes led me to try some of the many all-English storybooks available. Later I began using them to teach English to two elementary-school students whom I taught on the telephone. The latter experience has been so successful that it motivated me to write this paper. The middle-school students had been exposed to a lot of English vocabulary. Nevertheless, when I presented them with a page of English writing with no or very little new vocabulary, I was surprised to find that they seemed to have great difficulty with it. "Teacher, this is very difficult!" they would say to me. I concluded that they were lacking in ability to process English. T heir English training has focused mainly on the level of single words (vocabulary lists) and translation into their native language. Reading selections in their elementary and middle-school texts are short and usually accompanied by native language support. Perhaps this is why the students had not moved to the point where, upon encountering words memorized, they were able to instantly connect them to the mental concepts embodied. Their processing probably was mainly occurring in their native language.

    HELPING YOUR CHILDREN
    BECOME BETTER READERS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY Dear Parents and Caregivers: America needs every child to read. Yet as we step forward into a new century, millions of our children are falling behind.
    • More than 40% of fourth-graders read below their grade level.
    • An alarming 6.4 million children between kindergarten and third grade now face an illiterate future.
    William E. Trueheart, Ed.D.
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. NAEP 1994 Reading Report Card for the Nation and the States, U.S. Department of Education, 1996.
A Special Note from the American Academy of Pediatrics
As president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, I can tell you that you can make a difference by reading to your child. Pediatricians are acutely aware of the role that reading plays in infant brain and child development. We strongly recommend that parents read to their children daily from six months of age. Reading aloud to children helps stimulate brain development, yet only 50% of infants and toddlers are routinely read to by their parents.* We applaud RIF for developing this guide and Visa for making it available again this year.

When someone you love dies or is gone for a long period of time the natural reaction is grief. Anyone old enough to love is old enough to grieve. Even before children are able to talk, they grieve when someone they love dies or is absent. Grandparents who are raising their grandchildren and who are willing to talk openly about the death or prolonged absence of the child's parent will help the children understand that grief is a natural feeling. Children need adults to confirm that it's all right to cry and be sad, and that the hurt they feel now won't last forever. A child's questions need to be answered in language they can understand. Adults shouldn't worry about having all the answers. The most important thing is to answer as best you can and in a caring way. The following is a list of books for children and books for adult caregivers that may help: Books for Children Author: Martha Whitmore Hickman Title: Robert Lives With His Grandparents: A Concept Book Ages: Date: Robert’s parents are divorced, and he lives with his grandparents. Guidubaldi (1984) reports that most children, especially boys, whose parents are going through a divorce experience academic problems. Since they often turn to teachers for comfort, teachers must be particularly sensitive to their needs. Wallerstein (1983) notes that children of divorce must resolve a number of critical "psychological tasks" in order to grow emotionally. Thus, it is critical that practitioners understand these tasks as they work with children of divorce. The following is a summary of these tasks:
