But now an enormous amount of evidence uncovered in the past two decades finds that the brain never stops changing and adjusting. One line of research is showing that this flexibility can help maintain language processing even in the face of severe obstacles. Futhermore, some research suggests that special brain exercises can tap into the brain's adaptive capacities and help people overcome certain language and reading problems. People who lose their eye-sight do not have to rely on audio novels to fulfill a book obsession. They can learn to read compositions in Braille, a writing composed of raised dots arranged in specific patterns, with their fingertips.
It's one of the benefits of having a plastic brain. That doesn't mean your brain is molded from a high-molecular-weight polymer similar to your toothbrush. It means that the brain is flexible. It compensates for obstacles. It adapts. It adjusts.

Library Literacy Program Helping Adults Learn By Genoa Barrow Like most grooms-to-be, a huge grin comes over Louis Young's face when the subject of his upcoming nuptials creeps its way into a conversation. Books no longer intimidate Louis Young. The 50-year-old sought help from the Public Library Literacy Service and took control of his reading problem. Young will marry his high school sweetheart in March 2005. Theirs is a love story that almost wasn't. After losing touch for more than 30 years, the two began corresponding via letters. A year ago, Young, 50, wouldn't have felt comfortable even putting pen to paper, let alone sending letters to his lady love. Since discovering the Sacramento Public Library Literacy Service, however, he feels more confident about his reading and writing skills. And even about himself. "I'm happy and excited. My reading is so much better now. I'm at a point where I won't get that feeling of nervousness; I can just open a book and go ahead and read straight through it," Young said.

New York, February 25, 2002 -Libraries for the Future (LFF) today announced the 12 public libraries selected for The MetLife Foundation Reading America Program. This innovative, library-based national book and film discussion program for teenagers and adults, made possible through a $150,000 grant from MetLife Foundation , was developed to foster greater understanding and communication among youth and adults, especially in immigrant families. Reading America also aims to expand awareness and use of public libraries, particularly in communities experiencing significant demographic change, and is intended for libraries across the country to adapt to their own communities. The diverse communities to be served by the program include: the growing Filipino community in Jersey City, NJ; Sudanese and Vietnamese populations in Burlington, VT; Hennepin County, MN, which ranks number one among U.S. counties in the total number of new immigrants, mostly from Somalia, arriving in the 1990s; and the Hispanic community in Cheyenne, WY, particularly at-risk youth.

"Why?" This is the question we parents are always trying to answer. It's good that children ask questions: that's the best way to learn. All children have two wonderful resources for learningimagination and curiosity. As a parent, you can awaken your children to the joy of learning by encouraging their imagination and curiosity. Helping Your Child Learn to Read is one in a series of books on different education topics intended to help you make the most of your child's natural curiosity. Teaching and learning are not mysteries that can only happen in school. They also happen when parents and children do simple things together. For instance, you and your child can: sort the socks on laundry day-sorting is a major function in math and science; cook a meal together-cooking involves not only math and science but good health as well; tell and read each other storiesstorytelling is the basis for reading and writing (and a story about the past is also history); or play a game of hopscotch together playing physical games will help your child learn to count and start on a road to lifelong fitness.

For those times when you need a little help! Young Adult Area Programming and Announcements - September 2005 The Teens Came and Played! The Teen Summer Reading Program at the Greenville Public Library was a great success! More than 50 teens were members of the reading club, and there were more teens participating in the various activities included as part of the program. The participating teens surpassed their goal of reading a combined total of 300 books, which meant that Aaron Coutu, our Young Adult Librarian, had to shave his head as promised. Congratulations to our teen readers and all the young adults who participated to make this year's summer reading program a success! A word of thanks should be passed along to the following sponsors of the summer reading program for teens: Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster Video, Chili's Bar and Grill, Electronics Boutique, Kohl's, Old Navy, Pacific Sun, Pizzeria Uno Bar and Grill, the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services, Strawberries, Wayne Card and Comics, and the Friends of the Greenville Public Library. Teen Advisory Library Council The TALC committee will be meeting for the first time this year on Friday, September 2 at 4:00 pm. The council is made of area teens who are interested in helping the library better serve them. They share ideas on what books, DVD, and other materials the library should purchase as well as helping to plan programs the library offers for their age group. New members are always welcome. Teens looking to complete their community service requirements will find that this is a great way to do so!

110. Urinary Tract Infections In Adults

Urinary tract infections are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. Infections of the urinary tract are commononly respiratory infections occur more often. Each year, urinary tract infections (UTI's) account for about 8 million doctor visits. Women are especially prone to UTI's for reasons that are poorly understood. One woman in five develops a UTI during her lifetime. The Urinary Tract The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The key players in the system are the kidneys, a pair of purplish-brown organs located below the ribs toward the middle of the back. The kidneys remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine, keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood, and produce a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped chamber in the lower abdomen. Urine is stored in the bladder and emptied through the urethra. The average adult passes about a quart and a half of urine each day. The amount of urine varies, depending on the fluids and foods a person consumes. The volume formed at night is about half that formed in the daytime.

KidsHealth Kids Staying Healthy Fabulous Food
Reading a recipe isn't like reading a book. It's a set of instructions for preparing a food or drink. Once you know how to follow a recipe, you can get cooking! Recipe Name
The recipe name tells you what you'll be making. Some recipes also give a few words of description about the food or drink. For example, it might say, "Tropical Fruit Smoothie - a healthy and refreshing summer drink." Some recipes include a picture or drawing, too, to show you what the food or drink will look like when it's done. Servings
The number of servings is important because you probably want to know how much the recipe will make. For instance, will you have enough muffins for the whole class? Most kids' recipes make just a few servings because it's easier for kids to work with smaller amounts of food. But it's easy to make more (a double or triple batch) or to make less (cut the recipe in half). Ask an adult to help you figure out how much of each ingredient you'll need. Nutritional Analysis
Some people look at the nutritional analysis (say: noo- trish -nul uh- nah -luh-sus) of a recipe before deciding to make it. This tells you how many calories one serving of the recipe contains. It also might list:

A new program is creating interest in reading, says Christopher Baikie. Teaching literature is not just about getting students to read good stories. It's about helping them understand, appreciate and create good stories - a task that is becoming more difficult with the growing number of reluctant readers who would rather watch television or surf the net than pick up a book. The State Library of Victoria's Experimedia has teamed up with Pop Fiction to use the internet and multimedia to help steer young adults back to the printed page. Pop Fiction is print, digital, audio, visual and interactive, and is setting a national benchmark for young adult fiction. Young adults read a selected novel (the first book to be adapted into Pop Fiction is To Love Veronica Bee by Sarah Boland) and then explore the story's plot and/or characters, themes, and issues and expand on them to create Pop Fiction artwork. This artwork can be painting and drawing, photography, crafts, 3-D art, writing, digital art, and whatever else the reader can come up with. When submitted, the artwork is posted onto a Pop Fiction website (visit the To Love Veronica Bee Pop Fiction website at
