Please pick up a programming survey in the library and answer a few questions for us. Return the survey to the youth services desk by March 1, 2005. Not only will you have helped us understand how we can best serve our community, but you will be entered in a drawing to win one of two prizes: 20th Century Children's Book Treasury , which collects 43 of the most loved children's picture books in one beautiful volume or America the Beautiful , the glorious suitable-for-kids-and-adults alike pop-up book by artist Robert Sabuda. Criteria for optimal web design (designing for usability) By Michael L Bernard How can I make my site more accessible to older adults? Older users generally take more steps than younger users in finding the same amount of information. In another study , Groff, Liao, Chaparro, and Chaparro (1999) found that older users were slower than college-age users in finding information. In general, older users took the time to carefully read the text on a web page before continuing the tasks, which tended to slow them down. This finding is supported by the research of Youngs (1999) who found that older users tended to carefully read information before exploring, which further supports the idea of placing a site index at the homepage level. Older adults also prefer text to have very clear headings (see Hartley, 1994). Clear and large headings help orientate users as well as help those who have difficulty reading because of degraded or impaired vision by giving them obvious signposts. Usually the greatest factor affecting older web users is their decline in vision Figure 1.

Some advice for adults who are weak spellers
If you have read advice pages 1, 2 and 3 you will see that they are addressed mainly to parents who are worried about their children's spelling. When we created our web site, in April 2000, these were the people we had in mind. However, since that time, it's become apparent that there are many adults out there who have decided to try to improve their own spelling and we've had lots of e-mails saying how the site is helping them. Many tell us that they can cope with reading at work but they try to avoid writing because they are embarrassed about their spelling. Here are some typical comments: "I can plod along reasonably, with the help of my electronic dictionary, until someone looks over my shoulder (or I think someone is looking over my shoulder!) And then I go to pieces." "I learned to read OK at school but spelling never seemed to click with me. The teachers always put loads of red ink on my work and I think I just lost confidence in myself."

for a list of resources for parents. Click here for a list of scholarly journal articles on the topic of family/parental influences on adolescent pregnancy. Home Useful Tips Ten Tips For Parents To Help Their Children Avoid Teen Pregnancy The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy has reviewed recent research about parental influences on children's sexual behavior and talked to many experts in the field, as well as to teens and parents themselves. From these sources, it is clear that there is much parents and adults can do to reduce the risk of kids becoming pregnant before they've grown up. Presented here as "ten tips," many of these lessons will seem familiar because they articulate what parents already know from experience - like the importance of maintaining strong, close relationships with children and teens, setting clear expectations for them, and communicating honestly and often with them about important matters. Research supports these common sense lessons: not only are they good ideas generally, but they can also help teens delay becoming sexually active, as well as encourage those who are having sex to use contraception carefully.

: Whenever my husband consumes foods colored with Red dye #40 Laura Laura Laura: We are still going through the evaluation process for ADD/ADHD with my 6-year-old kindergarten student. As a baby he was sensitive to milk. He seemed to outgrow this by the age of 2 1/2. I have recently taken him off cows’ milk products and his behavior is much better. Yesterday, after one bowl of cereal with milk, he was jumping all over and said that his throat hurt. I have also found that taking away caffeine and red dye has helped a lot. Laura: My name is Kim. My son was diagnosed with ADHD at school and sent to the doctor’s office to see if he agreed. I refused to put him on any medication and decided to eliminate from my son’s diet the food colorings, chocolate and some other suspected foods. Everyone was amazed at the difference in my son at school. I am now a firm believer that you are what you eat, and I watch everything that my son puts in his mouth. He is 5 years old and has adjusted very well. He can tell you how he feels when he eats something that he isn’t supposed to. Thanks so much for your website and your book

Success with the Direct Learning Reading Comprehension Exercise. The exercise is described at the end of the article. I've been meaning to write to you for some time to thank you for one of the exercises you suggested I did in the recommendations in your Assessment Report. You suggested reading a sentence slowly and then trying to interpret it out loud. This has really made a difference to my comprehension and confidence about reading. Although my problems are only slight, over a period of time they have built up. Although I could read, many times when faced with either a large or complicated paragraph of text I would panic and not know how to approach it. It would seem like a block of words coming at me all at once and I would not be able to concentrate and pick the words out one after the other, let alone understand it. I would get impatient with myself, feel I should be able to do it quicker and give up. Many a time at work when faced with difficult text, I would resort to asking someone to help me rather than try to do it myself. Over a period of years this had become quite a mental block.

In 1980, at age 38, Ron Davis overcame his own severe dyslexia when he found a way to quickly eliminate common perceptual distortions. For the first time in his life, he could read and enjoy a book without struggling. After independent clinical research and working with experts in many fields, Ron Davis perfected his program for correcting dyslexia in adults and children. In 1982, Ron Davis and Dr. Fatima Ali, Ph.D., opened the Reading Research Council Dyslexia Correction Center in California, achieving a 97% success rate in helping clients overcome their learning problems. In 1995, the Davis Dyslexia Association began formally training others to provide the same program. There are now 406 individuals worldwide who have completed training and have met rigorous standards to provide Davis Dyslexia Correction.
