With medical adviser Stephen A. Shoop, M.D. Lindsay Wagner says she believed her dyslexia may have helped her. Related links Wagner is dyslexic. "When I first started out in the business, I confided in the woman who was the head of the contract division at Universal telling her I could not do cold readings," recalls Wagner. "She said don't worry about it and got me the scripts beforehand. When I would go to audition, the major part of my acting consisted of convincing them I was seeing the material for the first time." Like many people for whom reading is an extraordinary effort, Wagner spent her high school years compensating.

    Dyslexia and the Workplace
Debra Brooks is a business consultant specializing in helping companies create environments that bring out the best in their employees with dyslexia or attention deficit disorder. Successful companies, such as IBM, are finding that the dyslexic brain is able to think in ways that others do not think. Dyslexic staff are able to think creatively, outside the box, and see the entire picture in a way that a successful business needs to be competitive in today's market.
This is a story about a woman who happens to be dyslexic. The wonderful part is about how she compensates for her disability to achieve a successful career despite significant impediments. The flip side is about the destructive impact of a workplace inhospitable to an open interchange with employees who learn differently. In High School some of her teachers believed she did not have the skill to be able to graduate. But she was determined to succeed. Afternoons were occupied with her tutor rather than playing outside.

    Perspectives on Dyslexia
Dyslexia in Children: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Reading and learning are the two things that determine the success of a child during his school career. First he learns to read. Then he reads to learn. Because the child with dyslexia battles to read, he is therefore also hampered in the learning situation. Dyslexia: Is the Shoe Perhaps on the Wrong Foot?
Reading is the most important skill that a child must acquire at school, because one must learn to read to be able to read to learn. The implication of this is that the child who is a poor reader will usually also be a poor learner. Unfortunately poor reading skills, and therefore poor learning skills, have become a reality for an alarming number of people. Perhaps it has become time to put the shoe on the other foot… By Susan du Plessis

Learning Challenges need not be Life Challenges.
Some students are steady turtles, whose short legs bear heavy shells; others are hares who could run swift but drift. Yet the most disruptive scholars can also be the most productive adults: scientists (Darwin, Einstein), entrepreneurs (Hearst, Rockefeller), inventors (Edison, Wright), statesmen (Winston Churchill), and artists (Earnest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong, Helen Keller). Our school assists gifted students with learning challenges. Frequently creative, often gifted , these students may acquire talented educators to help become the "Spark plugs of our society, the shakers and movers, the people who bring about revolution and change." (Thom Hartmann, ADD: A Different Perception ) Students with mental or physical learning challenges may obtain mentors to help them race alongside competitors in professional society.

It turned out that my brain was fine and the real problem was with the muscles in my eyes. ... It wasn't until about 10 years ago that I found out I had some form of dyslexia or perhaps a vision impairment. When I looked at a printed page I could only focus on one or two words at a time. My eyes jerked across the page, and I often got headaches. I just thought everyone saw the same way I did until I saw a special on TV. I've read more in the last three years than I have read in the other 34 years combined. I passed the MAT test to become a graduate student ... I am now in my 5th class with a 4.0 average. Here is a comprehensive series, drawing on current research from the National Institutes of Child Health, to understand and improve the teaching of all students at risk of not learning to read or do math.
Taped in public, private and parochial schools in New England, New York, Detroit and Texas, from large groups to one on one, these lively videos show how children can make the difficult leap from speaking to reading, writing, and spelling when good explicit, multisensory, systematic teaching, based on language structure, is taking place.
The students and teachers profiled on the tapes are as diverse as our population, the excellent teaching demonstrated takes place in schools as different as those in Detroit, Michigan and Greenwich, Connecticut. The series emphasizes common sense, not ideology. Although teaching methods come and go like fashion, these tapes show how to take the best of what works and apply it.
    TOPICS OF TAPES
  • How to recognize and understand learning disabilities
  • Understanding explicit multisensory structured teaching and phonemic awareness
  • Explicit multisensory structured teaching demonstrated in a variety of classrooms, including whole language
