123. Comprehension, Coherence And Strategies In Hypertext And Linear Text
By Peter W. Foltz. The features in hypertext supply flexibility to the reader when compared to reading linear text such as books. The concept of using the associative paths in hypertext to retrieve and read information has caused great excitement.

      Introduction
Hypertext presents a new way to read on-line text that differs from reading standard linear text. Text is typically presented in a linear form, in which there is a single way to progress through the text, starting at the beginning and reading to the end. However, in hypertext, information can be represented in a semantic network in which multiple related sections of the text are connected to each other. A user may then browse through the sections of the text, jumping from one text section to another. This permits a reader to choose a path through the text that will be most relevant to his or her interests. The features in hypertext supply flexibility to the reader when compared to reading linear text such as books. Clearly some of this flexibility does exist in books (e.g. table of contents and indexes), but it is not as widely used or exploited. Hypertext permits readers to use these features automatically rather than requiring readers to manually refer to them as needed. This provides additional control to the reader in determining the order that the text is to be read, and allows the reader to read the text as if it were specifically tailored to the reader's background and interests. This flexibility does promise an advantage of personalization and eases the burden of finding information, However, is this flexibility actually good or useful to the reader?

Dyslexic and A.D.H.D. Kids!" " Fun!"
"I thought that learning to speed read was a lot of fun. I can
now read about 10-15 thousand words a minute."
-17 year old high school student diagnosed with ADHD,
Kennewick, WA

"New Speed Reading Video Available to Demonstrate Method!" "Designed just for childrenvery easy to teach!" "Does Not Require Written Homework!" "Includes a Scripted Lesson Plan!" "Great for Adults, Too!"
"Why is the main focus to teach it to CHILDREN?" Dear friend
When I meet people around town they often tell me they saw me teaching speed reading on TV or they say "I remember you, you're the one that taught me [or my sister] to speed read." But most of you haven't had the chance to get to know me or see what I do, so I'll start by telling you a little bit about myself. In 1980 I became convinced that speed reading could become a universal skill for all children
if it were just made available in the right way to the general public. At that time the only speed reading courses available were those which cost hundreds of dollars per student. Also, these same courses were directed at adults, mostly college students and business owners.

137. Piggybacks For Teachers - Trouble With Trolls

Piggybacks for Teachers Prewriting
Research and discuss Norway. Divide the class into 4 or 5 groups. Have each group sketch an outline of a map on a large piece of chart paper. Locate Oslo, the capital, make a small Norwegian flag and attach it there. Research geography, i.e. fjords, and add this to the maps.
Comprehension
Watch the hedgehog...does he want to be the pet. Look at the trolls underground, explain the evidence that they want a dog. Watch sequence of trolls coming up the ladder on the left side. List Treva's tricks, i.e. used mittens to warm ears...follow the blue-mittened troll. Using a plastic butter tub as a guide, cut out 6-10 circles of white construction paper. Write a sentence about the book on one side and illustrate that sentence on the other side. Punch a hole near the top of each circle. Trade with a friend who puts them in sequence and then puts a ring through the holes. Enlarge the troll pictures. Have the students pull out a cotton ball and glue this to the troll's hair. Make a background where the trolls are hiding. These can be used as illustrations for individual stories. Writing activities Go back and review what you have learned about Norway and trolls from this book.

138. Homeschooling Learning Journal
Teaches reading, writing and comprehension in a simple 2030 minute daily lesson.
http://www.amerikanpie.com/Homeschooling.htm
Reading and writing are the building blocks of education. The Learning Journal teaches reading, writing, and comprehension in a simple 20-30 minute daily lesson. A parent's involvement is crucial to any child's learning process. The Learning Journal works on the basic concept of writing letters, words, and sentences. Reading and understanding what has been written completes the circle of learning. Compliments any homeschooling program. Education has become one of our nation's foremost concerns. Learn what skills your child should be mastering in grades K-3 and how you as a parent can see that they are learning the concepts that will carry them to higher education. Jump start your homeschooling program. Culleen Glover's 35 years of K-3 teaching experience created this journal to help her grandson Robert with his reading and writing. Homeschooling is an important suppliment to those attending a regular school. All 50 states allow homeschooling. Some states are more stringent than others about homeschooling and may require that the homeschooling parent be a certified teacher or at least college-educated. Other states are more lax concerning homeschooling; not even asking that homeschooling parents have any training or education at all. Homeschooling can be a much needed supplement to those attending school. A variety of materials and resources are important to keep homeschooling fun and interesting. Homeschooling is just another word for an involved parent; whether the child's homeschooling is in addition to a public school curriculum or not.
