Reading text with comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading instruction and is a skill that is critical to success across domains of life activity. Across our life span and daily living environments, we choose, or are required, to read texts for understanding, enjoyment, or task completion. Children with disabilities tend to find this an imposing task. Children with autism, for example, are often noted for their relatively well-developed word reading skills but poor text comprehension. Children with cerebral palsy, on the other hand, often demonstrate relatively well-developed listening comprehension for text but poor reading comprehension. Our research (e.g., Erickson, Koppenhaver, Yoder, & Nance, 1997) and experiences at the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies suggest to us that students with disabilities have the same needs and learn in much the same way as other children. That is, if we reduced our research to a single conclusion, it would be, "Good instruction is good instruction." The greatest difference we find to date is that children with disabilities, particularly severe or multiple disabilities, require more conscious and careful consideration than children without disabilities in thinking through how to make good instruction accessible given the nature of their individual differences in communication, cognition, attention, behavior, sensory or physical abilities.

You cannot open a book without learning something. Confucius Good readers are both purposeful (they have a reason to read) and active (they think to make sense of what they read). Research over 30 years has shown that instruction in comprehension can help students understand what they read, remember what they read, and communicate with others about what they read. Specific strategies used before, during and after reading can help students increase their comprehension. (Source: The Partnership for Reading Online resources to improve comprehension:

http://www.indiana.edu/~crls/rogerfarr/mcr/usingta/usingta.html
Using Think-Alouds to Improve Reading Comprehension The use of think-alouds to improve reading comprehension is based on the following notions about poor readers. Poor readers often do not... • draw on background knowledge as they read; • make predictions as they read; • visualize the events of a text as they read; • recognize confusion as they read; • recognize a text's structure /organization as they read; • identify/recognize a purpose for reading; • monitor their strategy use according to the purpose for reading the text; • Etc. In other words, students do not necessarily think while they are reading. Modeling By modeling for students the types of behaviors good readers are engaged in as they read, we are providing them with the opportunity to become aware of the many strategies and monitoring behaviors that good readers use. When good readers are reading relatively simple texts (according to their own reading abilities) these strategic behaviors are fairly automatic. Typically, good readers only become aware of their strategy use when they recognize that they are failing to comprehend. They then are cognizant of the need to reevaluate their strategy use in order to remedy their failure to comprehend. Furthermore, good readers are more likely to fall back on appropriate strategies when the need to change strategies becomes apparent. For most poor readers however, using a variety of strategies, using strategies appropriately, and monitoring strategies is not automatic. Therefore modeling strategic behaviors for struggling readers by thinking aloud for them while we read (and hence, allowing students to think along), is the first step in raising their awareness of what it means to be a strategic reader.

Dear Friend, You won't believe this... According to the National Center for Education Statistics are not reading at grade level! Why? Pat Wyman, M.A University Instructor Reading Specialist Listen to Pat Wyman's Reading Solutions It's not your child's fault. And it's not your fault either. Most kids who have any difficulty reading, lack the basic visual skills that are the building blocks of reading excellence. Kids from families in all walks of life are affected. Even the daughter of a former President nearly dropped out of school because she suffered from undetected learning-related vision problems. When President Lyndon Johnson was in office, his daughter, Luci Johnson, suffered from poor grades and learning difficulties due to learning related vision problems. Her story shows us that anyone, regardless of status or income, may struggle with visual or perceptual dysfunction. Due to poor vision screenings, most of the these problems are missed in childhood, and continue through adulthood.

The explanation of the Reading Comprehension question type appears below, followed by the directions for the sample Reading Comprehension questions. Reading comprehension questions measure your ability to read with understanding, insight and discrimination. This type of question explores your ability to analyze a written passage from several perspectives. These include your ability to recognize both explicitly stated elements in the passage and assumptions underlying statements or arguments in the passage as well as the implications of those statements or arguments. Because the written passage upon which the questions are based presents a sustained discussion of a particular topic, there is ample context for analyzing a variety of relationships.

  • Read early in the day:  This will allow you to concentrate and retain more information than studying later at night when you may be tired.  When tired, your concentration and comprehension will decrease. Read for short bursts:  Try to read for 35 to 40 minutes at a time and then take a short break.  If you have this as your reading goal it can serve as a motivator in trying to really focus on the material at hand.  Try to make these “bursts” quality reading time. Find a quiet location:  Try to avoid your residence hall room on campus as well as the lounge.  There are too many distractions there that are not conducive for quality reading. Monitor your comprehension:  Ask yourself every once in a while, “What have I learned?”  If you are having trouble answering this, then re-read the material, ask a classmate, or ask the professor for some clarification.

Reading comprehension is composed of two equally important components. Decoding, or the ability to translate text into speech, is only part of the process of reading comprehension. The other part is language comprehension, or the ability to understand spoken language. All struggling readers have difficulty with either language comprehension or decoding or both.
