http://usfweb.usf.edu/counsel/self-hlp/reading.htm
Home Reading Comprehension: Reading with Confidence Having trouble with what you read? Starting to fall behind in your college reading? Imagine yourself having just finished reading a chapter from one of your most difficult classes. Stop and think for a moment. Can you recall what you just read? More than not, we read the words, understand what they say, but fail to internalize their message to us. Internalizing what we have read is more commonly known as comprehension. Reading comprehension involves developing purposeful reading skills, developing reading skills or literal comprehension, developing evaluative skills or critical comprehension, and practicing comprehension skills. College students need to be introduced to important cognitive reading skills for effective reading comprehension. Reading is an active rather than a passive process. Once you have established your purpose, chosen a strategy, and focused your attention, you are then ready to monitor your comprehension. Surprised? You shouldn't be. First, do all the elements and ideas make sense? Can you see where the author is leading? Next, can you connect ideas while reading at a regular comfortable pace? And finally, if you can understand why the material was assigned and can express it in your own words, then you should feel comfortable and have some knowledge about the topic. Keeping these things in mind while you read will eventually, if not immediately, tell you whether or not you are effectively comprehending the assignment.

Traci's 16th List of Ten: Ten Reading Comprehension Activities Posted to ACW-L, WCenter, NCTE-Talk, and TEACH on 01/10/99. After an extended holiday break, I'm back with another list. These reading comprehension activities focus students' attention on the various ways of reading a text, with an eye toward helping them differentiate among skills such as comprehension, summary, interpretation, and analysis. As I wrote these items, I was thinking exercises that I might use with students to prepare them for standardized testing (e.g., Texas' TAAS or the NY Regents Exam). These exercises alone won't prepare them for the test, but I think that the discussion that could ensue from completing more than one of these exercises on a text and talking about the skills that were used could help students become more knowledgeable about the ways that they can think about something that they read. Then I'd ask students to think about which skills relate to which questions on the tests. Originally Posted February 8, 1999 on the Daedalus Website.

53. Celebrating Thanksgiving At The Holiday Zone
Seasonal crafts, songs and fingerplays, language arts activities, educational games, discussion topics, reading comprehension exercises, and poetry.
http://www.theholidayzone.com/thanks/
The Pilgrims who landed on Plymouth Rock in December of 1620 found the New World much different than they had expected. Amid the hard New England winter, 46 of the 121 persons who made the voyage perished. But the fall of 1621 brought a bountiful harvest, giving those who remained a change to survive the coming winter. The surviving Pilgrims, along with 91 Native American guests celebrated the first Thanksgiving with wild game and vegetables. Throughout Colonial history, similar celebrations occurred whenever settlers felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude toward God. In fact, George Washington even declared a national day of Thanksgiving in 1789. But Thanksgiving did not become a regular holiday until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill proclaiming the last Thursday of each November to be Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, Congress amended the law to make the fourth Thursday of each November Thanksgiving.

Below you will find a summary of both of these books, printable activities and charts, lessons that relate to the books, and books that will help you teach comprehension! One year later, I read Strategies that worked. This book tells how to teach your students to think while reading (through think-alouds) and gives many minilessons for teaching comprehension. This book is divided into three parts: Part 1, THE FOUNDATIONS OF MEANING, explains how research based comprehension strategies support and enhance student learning; Part 2, STRATEGY LESSONS AND MORE, focuses on strategy lessons, response options, and assessment practices; Part 3, RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT STRATEGY INSTRUCTION, numerous resources listing picture books to use for teaching each of the seven comprehension strategies. Throughout the book, the author's talk about " anchor lessons " and the importance of using the first lessons as a way for students to remember a specific strategy and apply it. The idea of anchor lessons really assist the student in learning and applying the strategies taught! This book teaches us that we want our students to come to realize how important their thinking is when they read.
