What are Reading Comprehension Strategies?
Reading comprehension strategies are tools that students can use to help determine the meaning of what they read. The strategies presented in Reading Workshop's Comprehension section are those which enable students to interact with fiction or non-fiction, in order to understand and answer questions about what they have read.
The Reading Comprehension Strategies Online Tutorials explain how to use these strategies as tools. They should be used by students with the guidance of an adult, in order that any questions they might have can be answered. The tutorials can also be used to teach a class how to use each strategy, if your classroom is equipped with a computer/television hookup.
The reading comprehension practice sheets found on the Reading Comprehension Pages for grades 1-2 and 3-5 provide practice in using the comprehension strategies with both fiction and non-fiction text. The science reading sheets for grades 3-5 are written in ESL/ESE-Friendly Format. This means that they have been modified to reduce the amount of text read before answering a question, the concept load of the text, or the sophistication of vocabulary. Click on the grade levels above this section to go to the practice sheet indexes.

Thanksgiving Though it was not called Thanksgiving at the time, what we recognize as the first Thanksgiving feast was celebrated in 1621 by the pilgrims of the Plymouth colony along with about 90 Wampanoag Indians. The Pilgrims had suffered through a devastating winter in which nearly half their number died. Without the help of the Indians, all would have perished. After the first harvest, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and prayer to God. The food, which was eaten outdoors, included corn, geese, turkeys, ducks, eel, clams, leeks, plums, cod, bass, barley, venison and corn bread. The feast lasted 3 days. Though the exact date is unknown, the feast clearly took place in late autumn. 1. How old is the tradition of Thanksgiving?

About two and a half months ago, I said "Happy New Year!" to many of my friends. Slightly more than a month ago, I said the same thing to some other friends. In about four days, I'll relay the same wishes to yet another group of friends. I'll do the same thing in July and also in September. "How can that be?", you might be thinking (if you're from Western Europe or the Americas). "Everyone knows that New Year's Day is in January!" The answer to the question you might've posed is that exactly when New Year's Day is depends on the calendarand I have friends who use one or more of five different calendars to keep track of at least part of their lives: 1. January 1st: New Year's Day on the Western/international calendar 2. Between January 10th and February 19th (in 1996, February 19th): New Year's Day on the Chinese calendar (China, Korea, and a few other places)

Founded by Wayne Norman and Jacqueline Bailey This Poetic society and foundation became embedded within my mind, blazing a path through seasonal change with falling leaves. With breath taking views of inspiring beauty, surrounding the heart inside. Beating so fast only time past by, leaving poems along the way with meadows to roam while my mind stayed. Over the vast highways through the cities I found the need for care and understanding. Taking time to listen to the poetic voice I hear echoing along the way. Some time ago I was touched by a verse called "This be Our creed". With her permission we have adopted it for the Wayne Norman Poetic Society and Foundation as our creed. Such splendor woven with words sharing a warmth that instills us all. Please enjoy Victoria "This Be Our Creed" Each day let's do a golden deed, Some kindness show to one in need Let's try to lend a helping hand, A listening ear to understand. Let's try to spread some sunshine where We see a brother bent with care. With loving thought and friendly smile Let's strive to make each day worth while.

7 How to Improve Reading Comprehension
    Key Point
Good reading means building frameworks for connecting words to thoughts.

    The Purpose of Reading.
The purpose of reading is to connect the ideas on the page to what you already know. If you don't know anything about a subject, then pouring words of text into your mind is like pouring water into your hand. You don't retain much. For example, try reading these numbers:
7516324 This is hard to read and remember.
751-6324 This is easier because of chunking.
123-4567 This is easy to read because of prior knowledge and structure.
Similarly, if you like sports, then reading the sports page is easy. You have a framework in your mind for reading, understanding and storing information.
    Improving Comprehension.
Reading comprehension requires motivation, mental frameworks for holding ideas, concentration and good study techniques. Here are some suggestions.
    Develop a broad background.
Broaden your background knowledge by reading newspapers, magazines and books. Become interested in world events.
    Know the structure of paragraphs.

However, over the years, attention to the reading materials available for adolescents with reading problems has been sporadic. Up until recently, the only empirical research with a focus on materials for older struggling students was conducted 20 years ago (see Mason, 1981). As a result, educators often find themselves choosing from a selection of books that may or may not be supportive of their instruction.
