Introducing the Lesson Download or bring to class clippings from newspapers and/or magazines about athletes students might recognize. Vary the articles. Include simple reports of athletes changing teams or negotiating new contracts. Others might be about athletes who have set new records, or athletes who accomplished goals in addition to their sports achievements. Distribute these among students and ask them to skim the articles. Discuss briefly what these articles have in common and what is different about each. List some of students' comments and reactions to this question on the chalkboard.

How to Read a Textbook
Reading and Interpreting Diverse Materials
Students regularly come into contact with a wide array of materials that they need to read, analyze, and interpret. Along with books, students read materials such as magazines, newspapers, web sites, images, and statistical data. No two forms of reading material require the exact same set of skills in order to successfully understand the information presented. That means students need opportunities to learn how to read and practice reading each type of material. Teachers can help students gain the requisite skills in two important ways:
  • Through lessons that include more than one type of material, for example, lessons that use books, movies, and maps
    By providing students with experiences that allow them to compare and contrast information on the same topic that is presented in two or more different formats

    Pupils to view Guardians of Millennium Space Station web site. Talk in general about space travel how exciting it must be, the loneliness, why go into space, the benefits and the costs. Concentrate on one of the modules and discuss in depth what it must be like for the astronauts.
  • Whole Class Sentence level work (15mins)
    Read selected poem (teacher to select). Children to work with teacher to identify noun and verb agreement, identify style and content.
  • Independent work
    Children to be given a selection of poetry books from which to locate and select 'favourite space poem. Write out poem in correct format. (opportunity to use computers to develop communication skills by word processing selected poem and adding clip art, photos, sound and/or video clip. Encourage use of spell check, choosing font and bordering work.)
    Inform children that they may be asked to read out their elected poem at the end of the lesson encouraging them to check pronunciation of unknown words.
