Ideas A Few Notes
"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over a man who can't read them." Mark Twain These are just ideas that might spark a reading event your school or library could hold with a minimal amount of money just effort and some creativity and enthusiasm. Successful Building a Community of Readers and Writers initiatives are events that are actively open to the public. Don't be satisfied with your "regular" audience expand your expectations
Read With Me Set aside the last 15 minutes of each school day and regularly invite parents, grandparents, neighbors, members of the community, to stop in your classroom/school and read with a child "Read with Me." Make the invitation public and often, and greet guests when they come and have a plan to match them up with a child without a lot of commotion.
The key to any of these ideas is that the activity does not take place in a vacuum. Give it a lot of fanfare; invite the mayor, your state representatives, any local celebrities, and the general public. Announce it to the newspaper. Make the event one of great importance.

Reading/Writing/Literacy
Early literacy promotes:
  • Sound-letter correspondence (that is the recognition that every time you see the symbol S, a snake sound is made with your mouth. This is necessary for good spelling and reading later in school.) Enriched vocabulary (more words = better able to communicate with others) Development of humor through play-on-words and rhymes Speech sound development (sitting close to adult watching their lips and tongue and how they move to articulate sounds during stories). Exposure to rhymes, rhyming stories and musical activities involving clapping and dancing to rhymes promotes awareness of sounds. Attention and regulation of self (how to sit still for an age-appropriate quiet-time focused activity) Sharing attention and emotion (e.g., joy, surprise) about objects and pictures of interest to the child
Home Activities:
  • Read signs with your child when out walking or driving Games to help a child with reading include: nursery rhymes, finger plays, poems, stories with a lot of rhyming (Examples include: Hickory Dickory Dock, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and The Cat in the Hat)

I am pleased to have the opportunity to present to you information about the results of the extensive research that our Institute has supported on the process of learning to read in our Nation’s schools. Some children learn to read and write with ease. Even before they enter school, they have developed an understanding that the letters on a page can be sounded out to make words and some preschool children can even read words correctly that they have never seen before and comprehend what they have read. As Marilyn Adams has reported, before school, and without any great effort or pressure on the part of their parents, they pick up books, pencils, and paper, and they are on their way, almost as though by magic.

Participants learn together through active, hands-on experiences that model the concepts and strategies that are to be applied in their classrooms and schools. These practical activities are blended with discussions of current research-based literacy concepts as presented in many state language arts frameworks.
Strategies to teach reading/writing/talking across all subject areas are explored, using a variety of grouping arrangements and alternatives to fragmented skill development as they establish a literate classroom environment using The Critical Literacy Experiences that are key to gaining competence in reading and language:
PLN 1 Secondary is structured to allow participants the opportunity to explore strategies and concepts for increasing student reading and writing proficiency. Participants are encouraged to try out the strategies discussed in class and reflect on this implementation with colleagues and facilitators, as well as inform their practice through professional readings. They also complete a final project: a self-produced curriculum plan ready to be put into action.

Adapting Literacy Activities for Young Children
by Linda Robinson
Young children learn literacy skills in a variety of ways as they play, handle books, observe adults using print materials, and interact with others during storybook reading. One of the keys to successful acquisition of literacy is children's active participation in literacy activities. Children need to be actively involved in handling books and interacting with family members and teachers during reading time. Although the computer offers one alternative for assisting children and families with interactive literacy experiences, there are also many adaptations can be made to books and other print materials to insure that children are active participants in storybook reading. Children with disabilities as well as very young children who do not have the fine motor skills to turn pages can benefit from page turners, communication boards and aprons, and a book holder. Visual adaptations can also be made to make materials more interactive and appealing to young children. Page Turners
Another adaptation can be made with velcro for page turning. Attach a small piece of velcro about mid-way down the page on the far right side. Attach a velcro band around the child's hand so that he/she can touch the page and pull the page over the next one. Small ponytail holders can be glued to the movable part of a book that has pop-up features. Children can then pull the holder to enjoy the pop-up part of the book.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of increased access to books and home rereading of passages presented in school on reading fluency, comprehension and motivation to read for native and non-native English-speaking students.  The sample was comprised of first graders: 57 were native English speakers and 105 spoke English as a second language.  The participating 16 classrooms were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (a) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with audiotapes for home re-reading; (b) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with home re-reading (no audiotapes); (c) shared reading in a book-rich classroom with no home component; and (d) typical reading instruction (control group).  The authors examined the effects of the four literacy conditions and English-language proficiency on literacy achievement and reading motivation.  Literacy achievement was assessed pre- and post-intervention using reading fluency, vocabulary and story retell measures.  In addition, students’ reading motivation, literacy behavior and attitudes toward reading were measured through teacher and parent surveys and student self-report.  Students in the book-rich classrooms scored significantly higher than control students on the story retell measure.  The interaction between treatment condition and English proficiency was not significant.  Students in the treatment groups, particularly those receiving the home component, showed increased motivation to read.  The availability of audio models for home-based reading had beneficial effects particularly for non-native English speakers.

The Power of Family Literacy
Adapted by Janet S. Hanna, Kayla Hinrichs and Carla Mahar, Extension Educators; and John DeFrain, Family Life Specialist Previous Category Catalog Order Info The is the second in a series of nine fact sheets developed through a national research project - StoryQUEST - through the California Institute on Human Services, Sonoma State University.
StoryQUEST's Vision
High-quality early relationships and experiences throughout their daily routines provide each infant and toddler with the tools and skills to build a strong foundation for future school readiness. Families, caregivers and communities as a whole collaborate to enable all children to become highly competent in language and literacy. Virtually all families want their children to learn to read and write, and to succeed in school, and are eager to provide any support necessary. Family involvement in everyday language- and literacy-related activities has a significant impact on children's language development and acquisition of early literacy skills. Early language and literacy activities at home contribute to differences when children enter school. Parental attitudes and activities convey messages about schooling, work, the joy of learning and the value of education. Children who see literacy as a family value and learn early on that reading and writing are pleasurable, important and meaningful are more successful in school.
