Handling and Restraint: As stated above, domestic mice and rats generally tolerate gentle handling, though both may bite if startled or handled roughly. Mice are more likely to bite than rats under these circumstances. In fact, mice housed alone are more likely to be aggressive with a handler than those housed in groups. Cage territoriality (possessiveness) may be exhibited by some pet rats. We have encountered a large number of pet rats, normally docile in nature, that attack the fingers hands of a handler opening and entering its enclosure. This aggressive behavior is not noted when attempts to pick up these rats are made outside of their enclosures. Mice: It is customary to pick up a pet mouse by gently lifting it up by the tail and placing it into a cupped hand. If a more secure hold is necessary (giving medications or food orally), the handler may grasp or pinch as much skin as possible over the neck, just behind the head. The mouse can then be picked up and turned over on its back by rotating the wrist. The tail can be restrained by gently grasping it with the other hand, or between the fourth (ring) and fifth (pinkie) fingers of the same hand. Rats can be lifted by their tails but great caution must be exercised in doing so. The skin of a rat's tail can easily tear, so it is best to grasp

Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

Hawaiian Humane Society When people think of introducing a pet into their lives, most think of cats and dogs. There are other animals, smaller alternatives that make wonderful companions as well. Domesticated rodents like rats and mice are called "pocket pets," but please don't put them in your pocket it's just a catchy way of referring to their small size. These pets are great choices for individuals who have a limited amount of space or those who live in a place that is not cat- or dog-friendly. People without the time to care for cats and dogs might find pocket pets less demanding but still able to provide the love and companionship they are looking for.
Living conditions
Pet rats and mice require a large stainless steel, hard plastic or glass cage that will resist chewing and biting. Its length should be longer than its height, and the cage should be secure because most rodents are wily and inquisitive, making them crafty escape artists. Aquariums do not provide the proper amount of ventilation for small mammals. A well-protected cage will prevent other pets in the home from getting inside. Place the cage out of direct sunlight and away from drafty spots inside your home. Since rats and mice are nocturnal, the cage should be located in a spot that is fairly quiet during the day when they would typically be sleeping.

Kennel Operation
Proper management and good sanitation procedures as well as maintaining a preventive health program for dogs are key factors for the efficient operation of any kennel. Written procedures describing kennel programs should be available to personnel. An accurate record-keeping system should be used to maintain necessary information about dogs. You and your veterinarian should establish appropriate vaccination and scheduled worming programs for the dogs. In a boarding kennel, a record of up-to-date vaccinations should be required for each dog. Careful attention to kennel management and sanitation programs will help ensure a successful kennel operation.
General Operation
Good management, including accurate record keeping, preventative medical, parasite and rodent control programs and proper sanitation is essential for a successful kennel operation.
Record Keeping and Accounting
The primary purpose of any record system is to correctly record needed information in the simplest form possible. Registration forms or information cards for a breeding kennel should contain:

Scientific name: Rattus norvegicus
Size: Rats measure from 8 to 10 inches long (not including tail), and weigh from 7 ounces to about a pound.
Lifespan: Two to three years
Colors/varieties:
Lots of variations, from creamy silver, bright white and chocolate brown to black- hooded and blue-spotted. Rats are upstanding members of the rodent family, which means they are mammals with sharp front teeth that never stop growing. You may also be familiar with their cousinsgerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and mice. Just like you, rats need friendsand if you keep two females together, they'll become best buds. If you want two males, it's good to get two babies from the same litter. If you keep a male and a female together, have your veterinarian neuter the male and spay the female so they can't have babies. Just FUR fun: Did you know that rats are available wearing five different kinds of coats?
  • The short STANDARD coat is the most common.
REX rats have curly coatsand curly whiskers, too.
Rats with SATIN coats have super shiny hair.

    Basic Rat and Mouse Care
Rodents in their great diversity of temperaments, shapes and activities have been common as pets for many decades. They are often one of the first pets of young children because they are small, inexpensive, easily maintained and usually very tractable. They require little space (hence the name “pocket pets”) and are enjoying increasing popularity in a society where people want to have pets but are often limited by space, time and resources.
General The term rodent is derived from the Latin word rodere -which is defined as any of an order of relatively small gnawing mammals. Rodents are the most numerous of all mammals. Included in the order Rodentia are animals such as beaver, squirrel, porcupine, chinchilla, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters, chipmunks, gerbils and prairie dogs. Rodents have adapted to many different environments. Rats and mice originated in central Asia and were able to broaden their range through trade and military routes. Rats were first kept as pets by fanciers in the 17th century. In later centuries they were used for sport, pitting rats against terriers. Scientific experimentation using rats as models began in the mid 1800s. Rodents are clean, quiet, and most are easily trained. Human allergies to rodent dander and urine are fairly common. With proper care and commitment from the owner, they can make excellent pets. Nutrition Rats and mice should be fed commercially produced lab blocks free choice. Occasional treats of seed mix, fruits and vegetables, bread, and cheese may be offered, but should not be the animal’s only source of nutrition. Commercial diets should be purchased in small quantities and stored in the freezer to prevent spoilage. Supplementation is not necessary if commercial lab blocks are fed.

Many children have a guinea pig, a rabbit, or a mouse as a first pet. These pets make excellent companions but they are quite dependent, on their owners to provide them with care and attention everyday.
It is best for people, especially the parents of pet-keeping children, to make a conscious effort to accept all the responsibilities of pet ownership before finally deciding to purchase one.
Buying a pet rabbit, guinea pig or mouse really means that you are prepared to take on a serious daily commitment for five to ten years depending on the type of pet you choose.
    Children purchasing pets
Owning a pet provides a child with companionship and teaches the child responsibility and care for dependent creatures. Parents, however, must at all times guide children in their choice of a pet and the husbandry of the animal, and be prepared to supervise the day-to-day care so that the animal is not neglected through ignorance or loss of interest.
    Guinea Pigs (Cavies)
One of the most popular pet rodents, these are generally hardy animals, and given the right facilities are easy to care for. Guinea Pigs are docile with people and soon become tame and tractable. Their size and shape allow them to be easily handled by children. Because they are social animals, it is necessary that more than one pet guinea pig be kept for companionship.

    Care of Small Pocket Pets
Pocket Pets include guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. The care of each of these pets is similar. Each require a roomy, safe cage appropriate for their size and climbing habits. The cage can be bedded with wood shavings or shredded paper and food should be supplied in suspended feeders or heavy crocks that can't be tipped. It is best to accustom these pets to drink from a water bottle with a sipper tube to prevent water from spilling in the cage. Guinea Pigs Guinea pigs are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, but are commonly seen here as pets and research animals. They are related to chinchillas and porcupines. Guinea pigs make excellent pets if handled gently and seldom bite. They can be housed in a large aquarium or other open top enclosure as they seldom climb. They are best kept at 65-79 F. Guinea pigs are fed commercial pellets. Because they, like humans need vitamin C, they can be fed one small handful of kale or cabbage or one quarter orange daily.
