Scientific name: Mus musculus
Size: Mice measure in at about 3 1/2 inches (and don't forget the tail, which adds on another 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches) and weigh just 1/2 to one ounce.
Lifespan: One to three years.
Colors/varieties:
Lots of variety, including black, white, black and white, blue, violet and soft dove gray. As for kinds of coats, some mice are super sleek and shiny, while some have fur that's thick and curly.
  • Mice are upstanding members of the rodent family, which means they are mammals with sharp front teeth that never stop growing. You may also be familiar with their cousinsgerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats. One mouse in the house just won't do. Like you, mice need friendsand if you keep two females together, they'll become best buds. There's a good chance that two males will fight, especially when they get older. It's also not a good idea to keep males and females together, or they will have babies.

Chinchillas Ferrets Hamsters Gerbils ... Sugar Gliders Our Favorite Wild Animal MeerKat Meerkats were made famous by the movie "The Lion King" because one of the main characters, Timon, is a Meerkat. Isn't he cute? Meerkats are in the same family as the Mongoose of which there are many different varieties. Meerkats live in family units in burrows (dens) that they dig underground. The Meerkat in the picture above is probably acting as the lookout for the den. The lookout duty is traded off among the adult Meerkats of the den so someone can alert them to danger at all times.

Some consider them as vermin or pests, many envision laboratory specimens, others think of them as snake food, while a chosen population treasure them as pets. These rodents make excellent pets for children if they are cared for properly. They seldom bite when raised as pets and are handled with care. These timid and social pets are fun to watch performing their natural behaviors of burrowing, searching for food and playing. Unlike their wild counterparts, that are typically nocturnal, pet rats and mice have periods of activity both day and night. Rats and mice are inexpensive, easy to care for and responsive to handling.
Diet
As with any pet, good quality food and clean, fresh water must be provided at all times. In the wild, these animals feed on leaves, seeds, roots, fruits and insects. Pellet rodent rations are recommended for feeding in captivity, which are processed as dry blocks or pellets. Typical maintenance diets contain about 14% protein and 4 to 5% fat, while diets for growth and reproduction contain 17 to 19% protein and 7 to 11% fat. Seed diets are also formulated for mice and rats, but these diets should only supplement the basic rodent pellet as a treat item. Rodents prefer sunflower-based diets to pellets, but these seeds are low in calcium and high in fat and cholesterol. When fed exclusively, seed diets can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies.

Return to Pocket Pets Page Care of Pet Mice and Rats November/December 1994 Vol. F, No. 6 Veterinary Practice STAFF This information leaflet is designed as a method of communication between veterinarians and clients who own pet mice or rats. The environment, handling, and diet of these rodents are discussed, and common health problems specific to each species are explored. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your veterinarian to answer them for you. Mice and rats make excellent pets when they are properly cared for (Table 1). These timid, social rodents are fun to watch while they perform their natural behaviors of burrowing, searching for food, and playing. Pet rats and mice have periods of activity during both day and night. They seldom bite when handled with care. Diet Good quality food and clean, fresh water should be available at all times for your pet mouse or rat. pelleted rodent rations which are processed as dry blocks or pellets are recommended. Typical maintenance diets should contain about 14% protein and 4 to 5% fat, while diets for growth and reproduction should contain 17 to 19% protein and 7 to 11% fat. While many rodents prefer sunflower-based diets to pellets, seeds are low in calcium and high in fat and cholesterol. When fed exclusively, seed-based diets can lead to obesity and nutritional deficiencies. It is best to give your pet mouse or rat seeds only as a supplement to a pelleted diet, or as a treat. Many factors can affect your pet rodent's food intake. Such factors may include environment temperature and humidity, food quality, breeding status, and health status. On average, an adult mouse will consume about 15 g of feed and 15 ml of water per 100 g body weight daily. Comparatively, an adult rat will consume approximately 5 g of feed and 10 ml of water per 100 g body weight daily. Both rats and mice typically eat at night. Water should be provided in bottles equipped with sipper tubes. Tubes should be positioned low enough to allow the pet easy access. Inadequate water consumption can result in dehydration, lower body weight, infertility, and, even death. Empty, clean, and refill your rodent's water bottle with fresh water each day.

Pets and Pet Care
by Meb Ingold , January 2002 During this time of emotional unrest, many people are feeling the need for a pet. Domestic animals provide feelings of well being. Scientists have found that the simple act of petting a dog or cat can lower a person’s blood pressure. Here are some books and Web sites to help your patrons choose and care for a pet.

Back to: Advice about Pets Feb 2002 Several years ago we had a pet rat (now deceased). Now my daughter wants one or two mice. Most people we've talked to have rats so we'd appreciate any information about the pros and cons of having mice as pets. Thanks. Stefanie Mice don't live very long. Neither do hamsters, although they can be awfully cute, especially the teddy bear ones. Rats live longer which is why they make better pets. Pet deaths are never pleasant to deal with. My son went through a mouse phase a few years back and we ended up with so many mice. The males would fight with each other and had to be separated. The problem was solved when my husband brought home two orange tabby kittens so the mice had to go for breeding stock. If you really want to get two mice, make sure they are both females. They are not as territorial and will not fight as much. Marianne What makes a good pet? We vote for RATS!

Download this Book and Save Hundreds on Vet Bills!
We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!

Care of Rodents
Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals, websites or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy! Housing A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Rat Page Eva's Natal Rat Page Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

There is a variety of devices to choose from when trapping rats or mice. The two main groups of rat and mouse traps are live traps and kill traps Rodenticides are also used to kill rats and to kill mice
    Live Traps
Any trapping device that captures rodents without killing them is considered a live trap. However, any trapped animal can die in a trap if it is not released in a timely manner. The Mouse Master is a live trap that usually does not harm mice but occasionally a mouse will be killed if it is caught in the trap mechanism. This is usually due to someone winding the trap too tight. Other than the two circumstances mentioned, live traps are generally considered humane traps.
Live Rodent Traps: Mouse Master Tin Cat Mini Cat Multi-Catch Mouse Trap Mouse Master, Live Trap for Mice This repeating mouse trap has a clear lid for easy inspection and a wind-up mechanism which flips the mice into an escape proof box. An important tool in mouse control for many years, the Mouse Master and Catch All repeating wind-up traps can hold many mice with one setting. The mice can be released safely in the wild or disposed of by immersing in water before emptying the trap. Follow instructions carefully. Over-winding of trap can damage trap and might kill the first mouse to enter trap.
