Robotics General Lesson Plan. The object of this lesson is to show the teacher how robotics can be used to enrich and expand an already exciting lesson in any discipline. Listed on the next page are Milestones, points at which the project can be viewed to determine its progress. Also listed in the chart are suggestions for evaluation and points to be awarded. All of the suggestions are simply that, suggestions. No one knows better than you, the teacher, at which points you want to grade the students, how you will grade them or how much. Sometimes, however, a fresh point of view can be stimulating and provide a different outlook. We hope our suggestions may do just that. The robots are designed to be a part of a lesson and not an end in themselves. In science they may help demonstrate a theory. In math they can be used to test an algebraic formula or with ratios and proportions. In History they can be used to recreate an invention or a famous castle or building. In English they can be a book coming alive. They even play music and can be programmed as far as tones or time signatures. Their use is limited only by the imagination of the teacher or student. Robotics reintroduces fun to learning. The robots serve as a focal point for a lesson and a way to bring a group of children together and enhance their social skills. What better way to learn then have fun and talk while doing work.

    Ratio, Proportion, and Mount Rushmore: Sculpting on a Monumental Scale (Grades 6-10)
    February 21 Not exactly what you think of when you picture a scale modelunless of course you are Gutzon Borglum. The artist's workshop at the Visitor Center at Mount Rushmore houses this scale model that Borglum used. One of the visitors (actually, the photographer's son) is lifting a heavy jackhammer to get an idea of what the workers used to carve the monument. Have you ever wondered how Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, was carved? Carving a mountain is not quite the same as taking a hammer and chisel to a block of marble. While the block of marble may be large and imposing, the sculptor can move around it. This is not how you can handle things if you want to tackle a mountain in South Dakota! Yet this was the problem Gutzon Borglum encountered when designing the famous memorial to four presidentsGeorge Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.

    Activities: Step 1: Go to University of Texas Student Admissions website http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/expenses.html - flatrate Step 2: Have students look at and study the chart Discuss what an education at an institute of higher learning is going to cost. Step 3: Scroll down to the third chart titled Texas Residents Tuition and Required Fee Schedule 2002-2003 (per semester). Step 4: Have the student look at the column labeled undergraduate other than liberal arts and natural sciences. You might discuss the names of other colleges at UT and explain that liberal arts and natural sciences charge a flat fee. Step 5: Using that column, have them create a ratio of the tuition to the hours. Next have them figure the rate of tuition per hour for each step, 3, 6, 9, 12.

    Purpose
    To show practical uses of geographic knowledge and math skills.
    Objectives
    • The student will correctly state the circumference of the earth to the nearest mile according to their research.
    • The student will find the circumference of a globe, using a string, to the nearest inch.
    • The student will compute proportions from Haines City to their varying destinations as discussed in class.
    • The student will compose a one page essay to show any calculations and to describe the geography, history, and/or culture discussed in class.
    Materials
    • Globes
    • String and ruler
    • A calculator
    • Pencil and paper
    • Geography textbook
    Procedures
  • Using a geography textbook, have each student find the circumference of the earth at the equator to the nearest mile.
  • Have students break into groups (no more than three).
  • Have each student or group measure the equator of their globe with a string. Measure the string to the nearest inch.

    Prerequisites
    If students have participated in and completed the lesson titled "Time that Period!" , they have a good foundation in astrophysical data analysis and binary star systems. But if "Time that Period!" cannot be completed, please refer to the following:
      Math
      Students should have learned some pre-algebraic concepts such pattern recognition, ratios, proportions, decimals, and percents.
      Science
      Students should have had an introduction to the concepts of stars and space astronomy.
    Time Requirements
    For each class of students, you will probably need at least 2 periods/mods.

Proportional reasoning provides an underpinning for the study of algebra in future years. Students learn to think in relative amounts as expressed by ratios and rates (e.g., 15 miles/gallon, 4/3). When students perceive relationships involving growth, unit costs, etc., they are thinking proportionally. They learn how to apply ratio and proportion to many daily activities such as sales tax, the relationship between hours worked and earned income, actual distances between cities compared to map distances, and unit pricing at grocery stores.   • Brainstorm items in the room/world that are approximately 64 inches tall?
  • Now consider what items in the world might be 64 times taller than you?
  • Your writing assignment today is to write a poem or paragraph where you describe what the sights, sounds, and surroundings of a specific area if you were either 1-inch tall or 64 times taller. You are either extremely small or extremely tall. Make sure your descriptions are true proportionally.     Mathematical Learning Objectives:
    • To represent parts of a whole using an area interpretation of fractions To determine the fractional part of a whole when parts are not cut into equal-sized pieces To develop an understanding of the quotient interpretation of fractions To find the unit cost of items that are part of a set To determine the relationship among parts of a whole that are unequal-sized pieces To express fractional parts of a whole as decimal equivalents.
